Anyone know the story on this boat? Cat rigged, looks like a sq. footage. It says it's a 1986 but it has a centerboard? No transom hung rudder, ad says dual rudders and tillers? Maybe short little rudders no deeper than the keel like a traditional catboat? Has an outboard, but no bracket on the transom? 3 fixed port lights? The cockpit combing around the stern is not factory, and the cabin trunk is too big to be factory ComPac 16 as well. It looks like they took a ComPac 16 and tried to transform it cosmetically and functionally into a traditional catboat.

If I lived 1,200 miles closer I would go check it out just to see all the modifications (assuming it is actually a ComPac to start with? Hull sure looks like it).

That boat is at the Rudder Club where I keep my Picnic cat. I haven't met the owner yet, but I understand there is a write up about the transformation. The outboard is in an inboard well (I think that's how the terminology goes).

That's the construction photos.

Huh, crazy. I wonder how it sails. I wish there were more pictures of the new keel setup too. I don't think I like the dual tillers, but maybe there is some great benefit I'm not picking up on.

Thanks for the link.

If you look into his other albums on Flickr, there's a few more pictures of it, and a writeup from HeartlandBoating.com.

wow! That is an impressive project. And nicely done.

I don't think there's anything left that could be called a compac 16 though. He just cannibalized one for raw materials.

Yes, I know this boat.  This was owned by Cal Hopper--great guy, funny too.  He was a CLR participant a few years ago and brought this boat to the event.  We all were enamored with it!

Cal modified the boat extensively.  The boat was cut into 4 pieces, then widened and extended. 17' long and a foot wider.  The entire interior was redone.  Yes, it had dual rudders and tillers and a centerboard with cat rig.  It has an outboard well in the aft portion of the cockpit as well.

If people are interested I might be able to find a copy of a magazine article he gave me with a write up on it.    I have tons of pics of it too.
I recall that it did not sail too well from reports. At least one member here sailed on it (kicknbug).  It was not able to keep up with any of us, so I presume it may not be quicker than a typical CP16.  Not real sure as the captain is an important factor in the speed of a boat.

yep, i sailed with good buddy cal. the boat had dual rudders and an outboard well. it all worked pretty well. the tiller was on the short side so you got a workout if you were at the helm. it was pretty windy that day and a bit cool. cal was ready with a 5th of rum rolling around on the cockpit sole. it was a very cool boat. remember the "mood" lighting in the cabin. Saturday night fever.
