There are so many Ex-Com-Pac sailors out there, I thought an Alumni page might be useful.  Tell me what you think.

Tim,

I second this.  I see so many stay in contact, it would be good for them to share experiences from the Com-pac perspectine.  However, I did come to this post as I thought it was

Since my only qualification for "old compac user" would be my age, I wouldn't participate in it.

Personally, If I were a former compac user and I wanted to keep in touch, I doubt I would go to a forum listed as such, but rather would keep reading the other specific sites.  I doubt it would see much action, but I might be incorrect.

Lastly, and it's probably just me, but with options of "yes" and "NO!" (which in my mind means 'HELL NO!", it might skew your results.  Just sayin...........

I was under the impression that one was officially excommunicated upon selling their Com-Pac for another brand.

I love Com-Pacs, but I don't own a Com-Pac myself, never have, and I probably never will.  But I enjoy the crowd and the atmosphere here, so I crash the party anyway. I try to contribute in areas where I feel I have something of value to add to the discussion.

I don't think an alumni page is necessary, there are already several pages suitable for general or off-topic discussions.  But I don't see how it can hurt, either. I guess it all depends on how much trouble it would be to set it up, and on whether or not it might make the site unmanageable or cumbersome.

BTW, maybe I'm prejudiced because of my own special interests and areas of expertise, but perhaps a page dedicated to navigation, particularly traditional navigation techniques in general and celestial navigation in particular, might be useful.  Celnav may not be of much interest to modern yachtsmen restricted to lakes, bays and coastal cruising in familiar waters, but for people just getting into sailing, or branching out into more ambitious cruising adventures, a refresher or forum on piloting and dead reckoning fundamentals would, IMHO, be of great value; if for no other reason than safety.  Those of you who are familiar with some of my earlier writings on this subject here know I love to share my love for the topic.

In general, this sounds like a nice idea-another place for me to shoot my mouth off!! I can't argue with that! One interesting reason for this page is what leads a reasonably sound minded person to move from a Compac to another brand boat. Personally, I look at others all the time and-don't let this get around- but the little Flicka's draw my eye. Don't want to let Koinonia hear me say that, she's a jealous one, she is!
Cheers!!

Yo, Bob 23...

Yes, Flicka,

Aargh, me likes the turn o' her bilge....

...and her big sister, Dana..

Bob23

So true, Henry. They both compete for my attention!! First thing I look for when I see a Flicka is a for sale sign! So far, nuthin'. But there's a neglected one at a local marina that is calling my name! I love the Dana but they are a bit out of my range. I can't believe the room down below in a Flicka!

You probably already know this, Bob, but Flicka was designed by Bruce Bingham, who also designed the Com-Pac Legacy.  I've often wondered if he was the same Bruce Bingham famous for his highly collectible and spectacularly beautiful rock concert posters from the San Francisco hippy era.

first off i have to say that i loved my com-pac 16  for about 7 plus years. however, at 6'5" she became a bit cramped after 4 hours or so and was a bit of a challenge to spend the night on. we decided we needed a larger boat. two boats struck my fancy. one was the com-pac 19 the other was the eclipse. i had a lot of trouble finding a cp19 in my price range, under 5000 dollars. i did miss a good one by a couple of days but all of the rest were either too expensive or were project boats. the eclipse of course was way out of my price range although after sailing on one i have to say i still love the boat and one day we may purchase one. i altered my search to oday, hunter and catalina and eventually bought a catalina capri 18. it was a very good choice. the boat is roomy in and out. at 1500 lbs she trailers easily and can be rigged and launched in about 35 to 40 minutes unassisted. granted she doesn't even compare to a cp19 as far as looks go but like a good friend of mine once said, "beauty is viewed from the helm". anyway like others i have found this site to be very informative and many have vast sailing experience that they are more than happy to share. there are many good sailboat out there and it is always interesting to compare these with com-pacs. as hosts of the CLR, sarah and i welcome all sailors of all boats. the diversity of the group has made it fun for the past 10 years. we hope that other boats in the fleet have not discouraged anyone from attending. hope to see everyone in june.  thanks tim

OK, I'm not clear, are we talking about old ComPacs or old owners??

Doesn't really matter, I don't think I qualify either way.

Kickingbug, this forum wouldn't be the same without you and neither would CLR. There wouldn't be a CLR if you didn't keep it going all these years.
Sure, you might sail one of those bleach bottle boats and change a race course in the middle of the race, but you're OK in my book.  :) :) :)

If Greene was here I'm sure he would have a better dozier...speaking of Alumni.

Kick, It isn't my intent to ostracize former CP owners. Just a spot to grab about your current boat.  Hell, my manufacturers include Gloucester, Hunter, AMF, Glastron, Yamaha, Bombardier, Starcraft, Perception, and a few others along with CP.

I guess  I'm a mutt as well as a Mutt owner.

Of course I have throw my 3 cents in here and echo Salty's yarn. Meester Keeknbug puts so much time and energy in the CLR and he is the driving force behind the coolness of this event. I have made many friends through this gathering of like minded wacky Compac-o-nauts, most of whom have become lifelong friends. So thank you! See you in a few short months!!
