Where they standard on the 23? Supplied by ComPac with the boat?

Bob23

On my 1985 23, yes I believe the Johnson sails were standard equipment.

Certainly depends on the year.  Mine where Air Force on a 2005 23IV.  However, I believe that Air Force Sails was an offshoot of Johnson Sails, started by Johnson Sails ex employees.  Johnson Sail was out of business for a while.  Then they came back as JSI Doyle Ploch, now changed to Island Nautical.  Probably the only one that can answer your question with any degree of accuracy is one of the Hutchins.  The rest of us can talk to our particular years.

Johnson sails were original on my 1988 CP-27 (and on my 19 of the same year). Johnson was practically in Hutchins' neighborhood (St. Pete) and for a while supplied Hutchins with spars as well.

Not that it makes any difference if you're concerned about ordering new ones. I'm a National Sails fan but there are as many opinions about that as there are members of this forum.

Thanks chaps.
Confirms my thoughts that they are the original sails. Mine is a 1997 Compac 23D Mk 3 (I think).
Will see what shape they take when it goes in the water next April but I have already budgeted for new sails. Thanks for the recommendation but I will have to use a UK based sailmaker as shipping maybe a little steep!

Dave,

Just curious, is there a ComPac dealer network in the UK?

Not that I am aware of. Very few Compacs in the U.K. I don't know of any other 23s in the U.K. There are a few 16s and 19s apparently. I think they were personally imported.
I would guess the issue is ComPac would have to get the boats compliant with EU laws, specifically the RCD (Recreational Craft Directive) which has cost implications. Now we are Brexiting that could change for the better.

Actually, you can get National Sails in the UK. They'd be branded as Rolly Tasker Sails, which are made in Thailand, thus the excellent value. National Sails s the US branch but RT has a UK office in Southampton.

Also, I've read that numerous previously owned Com-Pacs have been shipped to Europe for buyers there. Apparently Germany in particular has a healthy market for them.
