Hello all !

So i am (ok i have a signed contract and put a deposit (the owner is using a broker) ) a new owner to a 2014 Com-Pac LEGACY.

It will be my first sailboat !! my experience in sailing is very minimum , i had some lesson this past 3 years when i am in Cape Cod , (i go to PBCB "Pleasant Bay Community Boating" ).

I have my power boating certificate since 2013 so it is only the pure sailing part i need to practice !
I have a 12 feet inflatable Saturn with a 9.8HP Tohatsu.

The boat will be in the World's fair marina for summer , still need to find a place for winter and a place for the trailer ( forgot about the trailer).

i was not really looking to buy a sailboat now , but i saw this one and i could not not take it !!
since i nearly read all of your forum , but i will still have a ton of question.

So be ready !!!!!!

PS: i am in NYC, Queen, and i will sail near LaGuardia airport , long island sound.

Welcome!!!!

Sailing is not that hard, just do it.  Hopefully your marina is like mine and it is a small community.  People in the marina will probably give you tips and tricks.  They may even offer to go out with you on your boat for a day.

Good luck and ask questions, there aren't any dumb ones!

welcome and congratulations
I think you have picked a very good boat to learn with.  Beginning with some good experiences will help you and family, or friends to be turned on to sailing. At least buy a good, brief, keep it simple book on sailing for beginners as your "shore school". Start out in easily managed weather and tidal currents (if they are a factor down your way) and have fun.

Philb is right: get a good simple sailing book..

The American Sailing Association has a very basic book appropriately  named...Sailing Made Easy.
About $25. from Thriftbooks ( free shipping).

Have fun in Flushing, NY. I remember going to the Worlds Fair in 64.

I should be visiting my family down in Breezy Point in July, I will give you a shout out and we can go sailng.
Susan
And congratulations on your new boat.
Dreaming of a SunCat
A Horizon Cat would be great too.

Congrats Pascal. You will be fine and can do all your early learning sails right in Flushing Bay all summer with the sw breeze. Then as you progress the bays and harbors to the east (little neck, Manhasset etc will be fun to explore. I'm in Huntington and never run out of good sailing grounds.

I too remember the 64 World's Fair although I was only 7 yrs old! Glad they kept the marina name. Best of luck.

Hello,
it is true that i am boating in flushing bay ( for me it's world's fair ramp) and the farther i have been is Hempstead bay with my Saturn.

The funny thing last year is , there is a big rock (rat island) near city island with a Swiss flags and a big sculpture of a man with an bow and arrow and a boy,
immediately i think "Guillaume tell"  (William Tell). It seems that this rock was bought by a Swiss.

By the way the marina is operated by the NYC parks & Recreation.

Was born in 64' !

I was born in 57 went to the Fair at 7 years old as well.
TedStrat, maybe I saw you there? Was that you eating a Belgium Waffle?
Pascal, plenty of great places to sail within Long Island.
You will have a blast! Head out too the East End and spend a week. That's what I'm planning on.

I used to sail that area when I was at Maritime College in the early 70's.  When you go under Throggs Neck Bridge, you'll pass Fort Schuyler on your left.  Spent many moons there.  Coldest place on earth in Winter.  Cold Windy and Humid.

Congratulations!
ASA courses  are a great place to start!  Also great place to tune up your skills.

Fair winds and distant horizons.
If not now..When?

I'll echo the ASA course, it's online, and was helpful getting my daughter started:

Q: Who should take this online sailing course?
A: If any one of the following describes you, this course is for you!

I have never been sailing.
I've been sailing a couple of times as someone's guest, but I couldn't tell you the difference between a close tack and a broad reach.
I'm not interested in taking a sailing class at this time, but I would like to know enough to be helpful on a sailboat.
I've enrolled in a basic sailing class, but I'd like to get a solid head start before my first on-the-water lesson.
After completing this course, you'll understand how a sailboat works, the common commands used to steer one and some basic sailing terminology. You'll not only get the most out of your time on the water, but also be able to actively participate in the magic of sailing!

Q: How long will it take to complete the online sailing course?
A: Anywhere from about 30 to 45 minutes.

Q: Do I need any books or other study materials?
A: No, the course is fully self-contained. You can start the course at any time and do some or all of it at a time.

I know the feeling Pascal! Bought my CP 16 a week ago and still have not slid it into the water! My new boat registration numbers were supposed to Be here yesterday....  I'd rather wait than try to screw up my bow by trying to align and space them correctly- like I did on my Catalina 30 years ago. We will be learning together! Still trying to figure out a good way to launch when the ramp has no dock.
Enjoy~
