   today i saw a sad little 16. it was sitting in a storage lot near Carlyle lake (southern Illinois). it appeared to be an XL since it had a bowsprit. it really didnt look bad at all but had obviously been sitting there neglected for some time. heck of a shame

Hey Kick, Bob, just some info on the 16 incarnations:

All of the changes since the original initial 3/4 rig have included a bow sprit and the 7/8 rigging. The Compac 16 began in 1974 and remained unchanged until 1984 or hull 2201.. Compac built a ten year anniversary model Blue hull version hull 2094 to 2134. The CP II began with hull 2202 a bow sprit, 7/8 rig with spreaders, and larger jib... A teak interior with fiberglass head liner was added at hull 2325..  Model CP 16/2 introduced in 1986 hull color changes to tan with hull 2330... 1988 saw the 16/3 and back to white hulls... starting with hull 2562 plus the addition of of a new fordeck hatch . The XL model saw a stern rail and safety lines added to hull 2756 in 1990 . Think this is accurate and from earlier info. Mas is HIN# 2508, thus a 16/2, tan, all interior upgrades and just shy of the Mk3. The XL's had most of the options that the Mk2 or 3 had as standard. You can figure her incarnation by the HIN. The change to the 7/8ths fractional set-up and the larger jibs had the most dramatic change in her sailing ability. Now that may not help Bob with the possible threat of walking the plank by "the Admiral" but should help sort out what 16 she is.

oh and a final caveat to the above incarnations, from Keith Scott, "The Com-Pac Club in Clearwater, FL invited our North Carolina Club to participate in a race in Clearwater. Com-Pac had just produced 2000 Com-Pac 16s and they made 10 boats that had a special tan color to celebrate the event. I decided to buy 3 of those boats and sail them in the FL race."

thus the first use of the tan color.

Careful there Kick! If you start off down that feeling sorry for her road, you'll end up with a "Foundling" like me.

Next time you're thereabouts, do grab a couple-few photos--especially of the state registration number--and we'll see if someone doesn't reach out to the owner, and maybe get her off that "longterm hard" and back into the drink, where she belongs. 

P.S. My own Foundling's going out for her 2nd shakedown voyage in a couple of hours.

    next time im up there i will try and get further info including contacting the storage facility and possibly the owner. i figure she could be had for a song. hopefully nothing is missing and shes not full of water. this might just be the boat bob has yearned for. i will go out on a limb here and if the boat is available and bob wants her, i will store it on my property. dont tell my wife! i mean it!

I have 2302 and it does not have a bow spirit - color is white/tan with a brown stripe - how does that figure into the production run ?

No clue! Does she have the 7/8 fractional rig with spreaders? The above information was taken from a report by a fellow who used to work at Hutchin's. I suspect Rich or Gerry could sort it out. They all are from the same wonderful design.

No it does not have spreaders - someday I'll have to call them - this is the second time I've heard it's a bit unusual -

My 85 had the old rig new interior. When I bought sails from Doyle Ploch, used to be Johnson, they said that in the transition year that what ever rigging was already boxed up and pulled by the tech, that is what was put on the boat. That meant if they pulled a 3/4 rig box off the shelf, it went on the boat... till they were used up. Explains the off boats, btw my '85 was tan, brown stripe, teak interior, and 3/4 rig no spreader. Go figure...Saw her out today with the new owner sailing away with two young children, made my heart warm...
