got the word that we may have some new sailors at the clr. a couple of guys (one owns 6 sailboats including the much loved catalina 18) and  of his buddies who sails a precision 16.5. that should add even more diversity to the fleet. sure hope we have a good number this year. but large fleet or small it will be a good time. and the new guy informs me that it is a full moon on the 27th  (night sail.   thanks for the kind words guys.

Despite the fact that I own a 23 I generally browse all categories of this forum and provide input where I feel it might be helpful and get the same back in spades.  It is likely I will go over to the dark side in the future, but would like to continue doing that.  I think Tim G. is right it would be nice to have a "mutt" category to discuss your current boat even if it is not a Compac and even if it does not have a mast.  So I'm going to vote to add it.  The worst that can happen is it gets no traffic and I assume it could be removed if that is the case.

(Really late response....)  Dark side as in another brand sailboat or darkside as in powerboat?

I like the idea of the alumni section... obviously you haven't been able to get rid of me yet. ;)

Fairly late reply too.:)  Dark side as in a powerboat.  Pushing 72 no longer can handle sitting headroom both in the cabin and under a bimini.  The admiral also has issues with no separate head.  And, realistically, Bay Springs Lake is not a good sailing venue.  Probably going to move to a boat that is hard to find in my area, reasonably common in yours.  A semi displacement boat maybe in the Eastern, Seaway, Rosborough, Acadia likeness.  Sea kindly, not real fast, not displacement slow, fairly fuel friendly at cruise and trailerable.  23-25 OAl, lobster boat style stand up headroom cockpit.  Was going to build one, but don't have enough controlled temp space in my shop to handle it.  Bateau Down East 25 long cockpit was first on that list.

Funny you mention that boat, Brackish. (the Bateau)

In about four years we're retiring and headed down near Charlotte Harbor, FL, stock market permitting.

No question I'm keeping the CP19 as it's a perfect sailboat for those waters and plan to sail her often, but am leaning towards a second lobster style boat to tool around and make better time to destinations and overnights.  Something capable of coastal gulf excursions up to 100 miles would be great.    Maybe put A/C on her (perhaps generator on a towed dinghy?) and outfit it for comfort.

I'll have to look into the other boats you mentioned.  The C-Dory 25 might be an option too.

The C-Dory 25 might be an option too.

I looked at a C-dory Venture 23 this summer and what I found out about C-dory's in general is that they tend to sell very high very used.  Kind of a cult following.  Did not want to pay what the owner wanted for a twelve year old boat that was a bit rough.  Additionally, I just want a little more stern deadrise to cut down the pound in a chop.

The Bateau was if I built one.  Also considered a Devlin Surf Scoter 24 (not yet on his site, on the drawing board) or possibly a Tolman Jumbo.  But just don't have the room to build it and I found out on my first build if you can't reasonably control the temp year round, an epoxy composite build can take a very long time.

My plan is similar to yours and I've even considered keeping the 23 and relocating it to the Gulf Coast where the sailing is better.  That plan would require a reliable partner on location.  I've already experienced trying to keep up a boat located away from me and it didn't work out well.  Mine at 35 miles is tough enough, 300 miles would be unworkable.  I would move there but the Admiral is dead set against it.
