These specifications are for all original Com-Pac 16 models, starting in 1974 with hull #1 and continuing to until 1984 with hull #2201. The original Com-Pac 16 does not have a bowsprit, which is probably the most reliable way to differentiate them from the later models.

Please DO NOT use these dimensions for ordering sails.  These were moved from the original CPYOA site and have been reported to be wrong.  Please go out and measure your rig to make sure you don't end up returning a sail to the sailmaker.

According to Gerry Hutchins, the original CP16 MK1 mainsail is 72 sq ft and the original MK2/3 mainsail is 65 sq ft. In terms of reef point placement, I would think that the 10% difference in sail area between the two would make for a different optimal placement. Below is the info Gerry sent when I asked Hutchins about rig dimensions:

Extend that to hull number 2133, as I have a CP16 without a bowsprit.  Could this be because it is a 10th Year Anniversary Edition?

Forestay length for my 1976 C-16 is 13 feet, 3 inches.

If another member can confirm that is stock and correct, we could add it to the Data Sheet

Yes, the year does seem to matter. I just bought hull 2244, an '85 Type 1/2 hybrid. The hull still has a lazarette and no bowsprit, but inside the hull I have the extra teak wood strips along the inside of the hull and the ceiling liner. The rig is still a 3/4 rig instead of the 7/8 with spreaders. Mine also came with side tracks for jib sheet blocks and cam cleat adjustment, as well as the standard jib and what I would call a drifter genoa. The drifter is a light weight, multicolored sail that should help in light air sailing.


Another twist is that the HIN on the transom added two digits, '16', slightly apart from the required number at the end of that series to indicate the model series hulls. My '77 C-P 16 Pilot House, an aftermarket modification, is hull number 278 and it doesn't have the model ID'd like the later one I just bought. (Yes, I now have two! And, both came with Lehr LP outboards, a 2.5 and a 5.0 hp that I got working very well.)
