Curious, has anyone here removed the boom gallows and replaced with a crutch? I know it's safe, but the thing is always in the way...

I agree the gallows is in the way alot, but it is not just for storage and trailering.  For one thing, it sure is handy when bringing the sail down in a blow.  I sail alone most of the time and can't imagine doing without it.

I agree with that sentiment...

+2. I've used a crutch a couple of times, the gallows is a nice upgrade.

Mike, here's a mod I did using the gallows.

Looks good Bruce. Probably not one for me but it's interesting.

You could consider adding a topping lift line to hold the boom up. Most larger sailboats have them instead of a boom gallows.

I have been sailing since the early 1970's. My favorite boat was whatever I could afford at the time! We have owned a couple of C16's, a Picnic Cat and a Suncat.

Or lazy jacks. I set mine so the boom hovers just above the gallows with the sail down. When the sail is raised the boom is lifted higher, and the lazy jacks are slack, not effecting the sail at all. Douse the sail, and the lazy jacks do their job.

The only issue is when reefing, the lazy jacks need to be reset to keep the boom above the gallows when the sail is down.

I did add a topping lift, which is great. I think for the moment I'll keep the gallows as this weekend has given my mind other... Projects...

I have a 2017 Suncat and I have removed the boom crutch or gallows on my boat because it was damaged. I removed it only to repair it but I can speak to how to removin the starboard uprightit if that is a question. The Sarboard side is more complicated because it involves removal of wiring and a stern light. At the base of the upright stainless tube are three bolts with nuts so it is not simply unscrewing the bolts. The nuts must be removed from beneath. This means someone must crawl through the storage area to put a wrench on the nuts to remove them or hold them while someone unscrews bolts from above. While  laying in that storage area the wires can be pulled through. Before pulling the the wires attach a long piece of wire or cord to the end of to wire so the wires can be pulled back through. The screws on the side support of the upright simply screw out. The wood portion can also be removed from above. My wife , who is 5'10" and petite was able to get in the storage area with little trouble.
