Hello all,

I am new here and last summer I purchased NOMAD, an '86 CP 27.  I love the boat and sail on Lake Pend Oreille which is in beautiful northern Idaho.  The lake is 43 miles long and over 1,100 feet deep.  The Navy has a base and a submarine at the lake to do acoustic research.

The boat is very roomy except for the galley, which has no counter space if you are using the stove and ice box.  To me, this has been the biggest compromise on the boat and needed to be fixed.  My solution has been to build a teak cabinet to solve the problem.  By hanging it on the bulkhead next to the stove no major alterations had to be made.  I also added a couple of drawers for some very handy storage space for silverware and small tools. Both drawers have a sliding upper tray for those most often used items. A knife holder and a paper towel holder were also added.  These changes have been a great addition to the boat and have made cooking aboard much easier and enjoyable.

The new cabinet does infringe on the bunk beds on the port side so he next project will be to rebuild those so there will be just a lower, larger slide out birth and do away with the upper bunk.

The winter cover is still on the boat but coming off soon...

NICE!!  I've got to think about doing something like this for our CP25.

Hey Steve:
Great idea and nicely done.  Super woodwork.
Some C-27's have a factory option of a swing up prop up shelf located in the same place as your shelf unit.
I think that I attended a Boy Scout International Jamboree around your neck of the woods in the mid 60's.  It stuck in my mind as an unlikely place for a Naval station.

Steve, very nice work.  I'm just finishing up a cockpit table for our 2004 CP 27 "Paradiso".  I'll post pictures of it as soon as I pull the tarp off so there's enough light for good pics.  Nice to hear from a fellow NW CP 27 owner, we're outside of Eugene, and sail mostly on Fern Ridge Lake with an annual two week trip to the San Juans in September.  Not many CP's here in the Northwest!  It's interesting to note the subtle differences between your 1986 model and our 2004 model.  Our companionway area is different, with a vertical bulkhead ahead of the engine, and then the steps as a separate unit, rather than the hinged sloping bulkhead/stairs unit you have.  Ours doesn't have the shelves above the sink, or the one where the radio is either, but those may have been options or added by an owner.

I rarely use the stove, so I have a cover over it to protect the stove and teak cutting board, and have had a microwave sitting on it. That really hogs the counter space.   If I can't microwave it, I cook it outside on a propane camp burner.    So I'm in process of cutting out and shortening the sliding doors in the cabinet behind, and recessing the microwave into that area behind the stove.  My boat does have the flip up shelf to the right of the stove.  I'm intending to build shelves up over the sink as well, but probably with doors so i can hide the mess.
