Title: New procedure for adding Photos: Attaching Photos to your posts
Post by: Tim Gardner on May 23, 2016, 10:06:08 AM
Okay Captains and Admirals, we are now going to go to school!

There is now a way to attach pictures to your posts here without having to upload your pics to a photo hosting site.
(some of us Old-timers remember that we could do that at one time)

First, you must re-size your photo to be less than 128KB 250kb in size.  If you are on a Windows 10 computer here is the procedure:
    1.   Create a folder on your machine titled "resized photos" or something to that effect.
    2.   Navigate to the photo you wish to place in your message. Right click on the file.
    3.   In the drop down menu, left click on Edit.
    4.   In the picture editor that opens, click on "resize" on the menu bar in the upper left side.
    5.   In the resizing box that opens, select "pixels" and enter 800 in the appropriate dimension box.
    6.   Save your resized photo as  "your_original_filename_resized.jpg"

My suggestion here is that we should size our pics to 800 pixels in the longest dimension. So if your photo is a landscape orientation   make the width 800, alternatively if it is a portrait oriented photo, make the length 800.  This sizing will allow the most photos in the storage directory onsite.  If you think more detail is needed, by all means use 1020 as the pixel size, but please do so sparingly.

If you are not on Win 10 and do not see the edit option in the menu box when you right click on your photo, you will need to use third party software such as Prish Resizer.  www.photo-freeware.net/download/action/show/Item/prish-image-resizer/ (http://www.photo-freeware.net/download/action/show/Item/prish-image-resizer/)
Download it, install it, and it will appear in the right click drop down menu as "Prish Resizer".  Click on the photo below to see what you will be seeing when you do this.

Do not click on the green Download Now boxes - that's garbage!

(If you are on an Apple product – good luck, I know not,  I-stuff.)

Now that your photo is resized, you can attach them to your message post.
Click on Reply if replying to a post or New message if starting a new thread.
In the lower left of the page there you will see "Additional Options"
Click the dialog box open, and at the very bottom you will find the Attach menu. click on the attach photo below to see what you will see when you do this.

Click on browse, go to your resized photos folder and select the photo you wish to post. Voila, Done! Drop the Mike!
Note the restrictions in the attach section, only 4 photos per post, sizing at 800 pixels will allow the four pics to post.  Try out a few in the testing section, then add photos at will in your messages.

Edit: I increased the size for individual photos, they can now be 250kb in size. Have fun! CaptK :)

Tim.  First off hello.  I hope all is well with you and your wife.

I printed off the directions and got all set to add a photo to a mew message.  I typed the message (on the Eclipse side) and clicked on the Additional Options.  I picked up 3 options: Notify me of replies, don't use smileys and return to the topic.??  What did I do wrong.  I see the attach menu here but not on the Eclipse section?  Thanks,  Al

Al, I just went to your last post under eclipse and the photo attachment was right below the posting thingy box
Try again, and if it still doesn't work pm me your phone number and we'll see what can be done.

Tim, I'm getting the same problem...when I click on "Additional Options" on my postings, I get the same options (I copied and pasted below)

- Additional Options...
Notify me of replies. Return to this topic. Don't use smileys.

However, I just clicked on "Addtional Options" for this post and the "Choose File" option shows up...

I'm having the same problem when posting on the Picnic Cat Forum. Under Additional Options, there is no provision for attaching a file. In this forum I do see Attach:....

Mac users can easily resize photos in Preview, by choosing Adjust Size in the Tool menu. Setting the width to 800 pixels gave me a 123 KB file size.

OK sailors...I made some changes on the forum software and hopefully fixed the photo attachment problem for everyone.

Can ya'll give this a try and give some feedback if it's working?  Both the ability to POST and VIEW attachments?

Also if anything else looks or acts strangely, please speak up in case I inadvertently screwed up :)

I posted two photos. They didn't show in the preview, but came through loud and clear!

Tim, On my lap top some of the posted photos have a paper clip right in front of the jpeg number. When I click this paperclip it opens my computer. Can all people open my PC or just me???

I am concerned. It happened after I posted a picture from my PC but I have since removed the photo but the Paper clip still is right under the photos that others have posted.

Tom,

I can answer this.

When you attach photos on this forum, you would upload it from your computer to the server that runs the forum. You would see a window pop with "My Computer" (which is indeed YOUR computer) and you would have to click on the right folder and file name that represents the picture you want to upload.

At that point, it is stored on the forum for others to either look at or download.   In other words, once you attach the picture ( don't see that you have actually done that?),  they are not being pulled by your computer any longer.  That only occurs once when you upload it.

After the picture has been uploaded, when someone, or you, click on the image itself once it was been posted, it should expand and "blow up" so to speak for easier viewing of the picture.

When someone, or you, click on the paperclip or the blue image file named (ending in .jpg), it DOWNLOADS the picture from the forum to your computer (or whoever's computer clicked it).  It should appear in "My Downloads" (for Windows) or "Downloads" on a MAC (or whatever folder you have designated to store files that are downloaded from the internet). Or it might bring up a window that asks you where you want to download it to, depending on your windows version and how it was setup.

The act of clicking on the paperwork, or the filename.jpg (AFTER it was uploaded already)  is so you can save someone else's picture on your computer.  Again, you are pulling the picture from the forum at that point.  So is everyone else.

You are in NO DANGER to anyone accessing your computer.   Think of it like you uploaded it to the cloud and others are pulling it from the cloud.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Tim,

I don't know but maybe the paper clip is asking me if I want to add the posted photo to my PC?  Do you see the paperclip?  There are several but if you want to test I know the photo posted by Ron Hoddinot has a paperclip on my PC.

Tom,

Yes, like I said earlier,  if you press the paperclip, it will want to download the picture from this forum TO your computer. If you don't want the picture, don't press the paperclip.

Or just click the picture itself to enlarge.

I'll try this again when I have some time, I am curious though why it's so hard to post photos here, is it a money thing? I know that other group sites have paying subscribers for added benefits such as using classifieds. I realize that this group may be too small to make that work but I'd pay a reasonable fee to easily post photos. I think the popularity of the Facebook page is directly due to the ease of posting photos. By the way, I would like to thanks everyone who has managed to post photos in the past, it was a major help when I was doing my foiled rudder project!
Thanks, Lance

Hello.  I have tried many times to add a photo to a post, (Windows 10, Firefox and Edge) followed all instructions, but it won't post. Photo is 216kb, max dimension less than 800 pixels. Edge gives me the message 'CYPOA can't handle this request', and Firefox just shows a white screen after I press 'post'. Anyone else having any issues? Thanks.

I just posted a photo in the Testing forum using an old version of Safari and Mac OS X 10.11.6. I see it as 202 kb, largest dimension 700 pixels, the forum sees it as 145 kb. Seemed to work OK.

Thank you Bruce. I kept to the Forum suggestion of 250kb and less than 800 pixels. I'll try less than 200kb and less than 700 pixels and see if I have any luck.

I've reduced my photo to 400x356 pixels and 152kb and it still won't post.

What file type? Try another?

I don't think it's file size, the new limits allow for huge files, and too much scrolling to view IMHO.

Huh, jpg should work.

I just posted another .jpg using Firefox, no problem. Can't help with Windows or Edge.

If you want, I'll send you my email in a PM if you want to send me a photo to try posting.

Thanks Bruce, I've solved the mystery.  I use Photoshop and when I saved the photo as a jpg it apparently saveds it as a jpeg. However, it doesn't show as that, it shows as a jpg file extension.  I only discovered this by trying to use the iphone to post, and instead of giving me a blank screen as Windows did, it instead gave a message saying 'jpeg' file type is not allowed...etc.  So I saved my photo as a PNG instead and it loaded fine. Thanks for your help. Always good to solve these little mysteries.

Excellent. Your chartplotter mount looks good!

The table in your photo looks like lacewood, not common in the States. I see you're from Australia. G'day mate!

Hi Bruce, it's commonly called Silky Oak here, and was used extensively for furniture back when furniture was made of real wood. Grevillea robusta apparently - not sure what it might be called there.  A bit of googling seems to suggest there's a few similar woods including Brazilian Lacewood, but also a set of the Proteaceae family trees, more common here, including the Grevillea. Lovely wood for furniture and as I have a bit of it around in the shed, I use it for boat bits too.

We only see it as a veneer here, and it's rare at that. The ray is so distinctive. An oak common name, if inaccurately attributed to a non-Quercus species, is easily understood.
