Title: 4th ANNUAL MID WINTER GATHERING...
Post by: Bob23 on September 27, 2015, 07:26:13 PM
...of the East Coast Compac-o-nauts!
Yup, boys and girls: What time is it? It's time to talk about the 4th annual Mid Winter Gathering. If you have no idea what this is, rather than making me babble on here, do a quick search. But since I'm in the mood to gab, allow me to enlighten you:
Each winter for the past 3 winters,  a bunch of us decided to get together for a dinner or lunch at a mutually agreed upon location here in the NJ/PA area only because it was central for those who were at the first one. Simply put, it is a nice way to help each other out through the winter when we'd really rather be sailing in the caribean!
So, I am hereby proposing that we think about sometime in the mid to later part of January, 2016. In the past we've had such dignitaries as Tim Gardner (please bring Vicki!), Capt and Admiral Elk, JT and Janet, Marty and Barbara  and please forgive me if I have forgotten the names of some others...I could look it up but I'm too lazy on this sunday night.
Please consider attending this gala event, ladies and gents! Once we get some idea of who and where you are from, we can pick a place. Last year it was lunch on the Delaware in Lamberville, NJ and the walk around the shops was really nice afterward.
We deliberately do this in January so everyone can recover from Christmas and it kinda signals the official start of the I-can't-wait-to-sail season!!!
At your service,
Bob23

Hey Bob:

Count us in.  We will be leaving for Florida somewhere around the 21st or 22nd of January, so your idea of mid January sounds good.

Um, by the way, since when have you NOT been in the mood to gab?  And no, this doesn't mean I will be picking up the tab...

     Yours for gabbing,

     Elk River

In a complete about face to my procrastinative ways, let's plan on January 16th or 17th? And Brad, thanks sooooo much for picking up the tab for this. You really are a swell guy. I owe you a 6 pack of PBR- in cans, of course!!!!

Yo, Bobster:

I will certainly pick up the tab and hand it right over to you!  I've been in the Garden State enough to have learned some of your ways...

You can keep the PBR. From what I have read on this site, I would be better off drinking several years old bilge water.

Ok, fine then. I owe you a 6 pack of fine 10 year old Compac 23 bilge water. It's just ready to be tasted. Aged in a 30 year old fiberglass barrel!

I been thinkin'... (smell the smoke?) maybe Moshulu at Penn's Landing in Philly or The King George II Inn in Bristol PA. The Moshulu$$$ is right on I-95 and George II$$ is minutes away from I-95. Neither joint is dirt cheap, but the food is very good and both restaurants are on the water. George II has view of the Delaware River and Burlington Island, Moshulu is opposite the battleship New Jersey). Weather permitting (don't worry, it won't!) we can eat outside (or drink dark & stormys, won't care if its cold).

As the official instigator of the MWG, I hereby decree that the 4th Annual Mid Winter Gathering of the East Coast chapter of the Compac-o-nauts will be Saturday, January 16th, in the year of our Lord- 2016. All in favor, say aye! All in favor, nay. Ok...the aye's have it!!! Time and place to be decided.

Allen:
I was gonna procrastinate but I couldn't get around to it!!! The real Bob23 is alive and well and trapped in this old farts body!!!

We have not decided on a location yet but in the past, after we got a real roster together, we tried to pick out a place that was kind of central for everyone. Strangely enough, most of the places were very close to Marty's house!!  Let's plan on having a final roster by November's end then we can decide on a place.

Ok. Quite contrary to my procrastinative ways, I'm suggesting that we consider Moshulo for the 4th annual MWG of the East Coast Compac-o-nauts, hereafter known as MWG #4. The honorable Marty suggested this in the past and the Admiral and I were discussing it tonight. I've eaten there before- our daughter worked in a restaurant on LBI that also owned Moshulu. Your thoughts? I'm trying to keep this as local for everyone but close enough to lure Tim and Vicki.

This is great, fellow Compac-o-nauts!
Repeating myself, I'd like to have a complete roster list by November 30th. That should give everyone enough time to decide if they really want to throw in with this lot of sailing wharf rats. In the next few days, I'll post who I think is coming thus far. Moshulu is really a great place for this (thanks Marty!) and is about as central as it gets. Some of us will be travelling a distance but it's worth it as previous attendees can attest.
    More later....

4th Annual MWG of the East Coast Compac-o-nauts update:
The official roster that I have so far is:
Bob and Linda (dats me, folks)
Brad and Lily
Marty and Barbara
Jason and Janet
Allen and Suzie
Kevin and Lesa (maybe)
Tim and Vicci ( I hope so)

January 16th, 2016 at Moshulu, (see above). Although we've chosen a place and date, we have not discussed whether lunch or dinner would be best. I'd like some feedback before I call for a reservation. As you can see above, the only maybes are Kev and Lesa who are personal friends so I'll check it out with them, and Tim and Vicci. Let me know, Mr. Gardner, if you are interested in throwing in with this lot!

Looking forward to this epic event and thank you to everyone who attends. You are the reason this is THE Compac event to attend!
At your service,

Hello Bob23,

No Mas here. I have the gathering on our calendar as well as another scheduled earlier possible conflict. How late may we let you know if we can make it? Will try to rearrange things. Would love to meet everyone and the venue looks fabulous but we can only have our status as "interested" as this point.

Also hear you are coming down to the first CBMWG later that same month. Regardless looking forward to meeting all. PeterG and myself had a preliminary Chesapeake Bay get together a few weeks ago. Was great to hook up with another CPr.

Barring nuclear war, I will be down to the, what's it called? CBMWG...yup, that's it. I may be arriving with Peter so if you plan to shoot, aim for the ugly one!!! Hahaha!!!
I'm gonna call Moshulu tomorrow and make tentative reservations for 16, being optimistic that you'll be there. I'd say if you can let me know the first thing next year, that should be enough time.
Sorry, they don't serve PBR.

uh....we noticed they don't serve PBR......it was one of the factors in our decision to try and make it. We didn't want to have to be diving for the beer! (mesh bag, no tether)
:)

P.S. anyone interested in a tour of the New Jersey? Just across the mooring from Moshulu isn't she? Also what are folks doing for accommodations?

I'm not sure what anyone is doing for accommodations. We are just driving back to the hacienda de loco. We only live on the other side of the state! Less than an hour and a half. Although, staying over isn't a bad idea- we all know how much the Admiral can drink once she gets going!!! Hahaha!!!!

Ok, enough of this Tomfoolery! This is serious Compac business. I called Moshulu and they can seat all 16 of us, that's 16 if the 4 undecided decide to decide. I heard through the grapevine that the famous K3v1n and his bride Lesa plan to attend so now it's just up to No Mas to decide. I was thinking of a brunch, around 1pm ish but I value your imput. (Even though I won't listen to a thing you say!!!) Does that work for everyone or most of us? What say ye, merry gentlemen?  We could do lunch earlier or a later dinner. In the past, we've done both and had a blast of a time either way. I don't need to make a firm commitment until after the first of the year so we have some time yet. I plan to drive out there during the Christmas break and personally select a table location. Remember, this is a restored ship with a working gang plank and I hope I won't need send anyone over the side who steps out of line.

Looking forward to this 4th annual gathering- it will be the biggest yet!!!!!
For the cause,
Bob23

Still trying to reschedule a conflict which is a little time sensitive that involves other folk's calendars but making headway.

So what is everyone else doing for lodging? Might be kinda fun to raft up afterwards! Weigh in.

Good job and thanks, Bob!
Suzie and I are making a long weekend out of it.  We will come down on Friday and leave on Sunday, do some site seeing and maybe look up some old friends. I'm not sure about the lodging yet but there are often good deals out there.  (The Hilton is only 3 blocks from Moshulu and right next to the Independence Seaport Museum..  Hmmmm?)

Lunch or dinner will be fine with us.

Can't wait to see y'all.

Well folks,

My Admiral's Shrink, Dr.Chriss, has written a prescription for Vicki to take a minimum two weeks away before she can return to part time work in January.  We have been graciously offered a home in Venice Fl for as long as we want in January by one of my friends.
Soooo, we will not be able to make the MWG in Philly.  Instead, we'll be basking in the sunshine in Fl.

Hey Allen and Suzie,

Had been looking for accommodations as well down by the docks. After all this is a sailors gathering! There are a few options near there  Not sure if we will get there Friday or not, actually still have a conflict that we are actively working to eliminate, looking better though. Also would like to sight see some as we have never been there.

Looking forward to meeting folks. Any one else wanna weigh in on thoughts about accommodations and timing?

No Mas, aka Rick and Susan

Oh Bob, since you have Tim's credit card maybe we should just book some rooms at the Hilton for everyone!

It is after the first of the year and we are still unable to pull free on that weekend. Kinda bummed, but we knew that Bob needed a yup or nope by now and it's gunna have to be nope. If we do end up able to get away for those couple days will call and try to get with the rest of the group. There will be other times and the venue looked like something you would not forget!

Well, we're getting close to the MWG. Looking forward to seeing all. I know that visiting the battleship New Jersey was suggested (but is closed) however, right next door to the Mosholu is the battleship Olympia (the Maine's sister ship). I believe it is open for tours. Also a submarine. These are all at Penn's Landing.

Also, I believe 1/2 price parking ($7.50 vs $15.00) is available nearby. I'll look into that... again. I had already researched this stuff when my computer totally crashed thanks to Microsoft Windows 10. A caveat: If you're planning to install W10 on your computer, you must do a total re-install of the operating system (I found out too late). The W10 install can kill all your restore points. I found this out after I installed W10 and found that some features didn't work properly so tried (following Microsoft's instructions) to go back... disaster.

Hope all enjoyed the New Year. Going to miss those that can't make it. Hope T and V have warm thoughts for us!

ATTENTION: CALLING ALL HANDS:
A few things: First, the final roster:
Us (Bob and Linda)
Marty and Barbara
Jason and Janet
Brad and Lily
Kevin and Lesa
and Allen and Suzie. I don't believe I've forgotten anyone but if so, speak now or forever hold your peace!
Second, and more importantly:  I spoke to Moshulu about 5 or 6 weeks ago and was told no problem for our gathering for lunch and to call back about a week away. Well....I just did and was informed that they have discontinued lunches on Saturday, as of about 5 or 6 weeks ago. Cute. I immediately called Marty for he is familiar with the area and recommended the King George the Second Inn. I have called their and made a lunch reservation for the 12 of us for 12:30 pm Saturday January 16th in the year of our Lord 2016.

I'm sorry for this last minute switcheroo but it is out of my control. Please let me know if you are not coming so I an alter the reservation number but I hope everyone can make it.

I've received an email from Brad informing me that he and Lily will not attend the MWG due to some illness he is dealing with. I will miss them not being there. We became instant friends at the BBB 2014 and I enjoy our constant ribbing of each other. I know deep down he wishes he was from Joisey, as he pronounces it.
So if Larry doesn't respond, it's down to 10 of us. I'm looking forward to this epic event and it'll be nice to catch up with old friends.

Thanks for the kind words.  I know that it is difficult for you to hold your tongue, but did you have to hold it in your lap after biting it off when you reread the words you had written?!  Hopefully, your reattachment operation went smoothly!  When did I ever say I wished I was from Joisey when being a Baystater originally I had the opportunity to pahk my cah in Hahvad yahd??  A vivid imagination you have down there in the wilted Garden State!!  Lily and I do enjoy the shorter, milder winters here in Maryland, I must say.  We will miss you folks at the MWG, but I feel that we should be able to make it to the BBB 2016.  My last year's HOTCR was a little early in March, perhaps April or May would be a better timeframe for folks.  I'll work on that.

The countdown has begun! The King George II Inn in Bristol Boro, PA has been warned of our pending arrival. Some possibly helpful info:

Coming via the PATP - Get off at the Bristol/Levittown exit and head South on Bristol Pike (US13). Take the Jug-handle to Bath Street. Follow Bath Street to the "T" and bear Left. On the green light, continue on Mill Street (Bristol's main business street with most all the shops and joints) to the end. Continue past the KGII toward the Delaware River and the Wharf. Please turn right to get to the large free munincipal parking lot (close metered parking is available on Mill and Radcliffe Streets).

Coming from New Jersey via the NJTP - same as above!

Coming from New Jersey via the Burlington-Bristol Bridge and Rt 413 - Take the first Right onto Otter Street (Old Route 13) and continue on to turn Right on Mill Street.

Any questions, please feel free to call me on my cell at 267-242-4678.

See ya soon!

Marty K.

P.S. Once again, I can almost walk to the MWG! Ha, ha. I know, my turn will come. But, gas is less than 2 bucks a gallon!
P.P.S. A walk along Mill Street past the KGII and north on Radcliffe Street will prove rewarding (weather permitting). The mostly 18th and 19th Century architecture is wonderful to view.
P.P.P.S. Per our glorious Commodore: "I have called and made a lunch reservation for the 10 of us for 12:30 pm Saturday January 16th in the year of our Lord 2016."

Same here. Just to ease my mind I called to make sure that we are still on their schedule. The reservation is under my name and we are upstairs, with a river view. Cheers, me hearties!
Bob23 and Admiral Linda, the gracious and most patient.

okay, So I just notice a picture with a Henry Every, a yacht ensign, and a Compac burgee.  That is an odd arrangement of flags.

I hope that you all have a good time.  I hope that a few of you filter down to the Chesapeake gathering in a few weeks.

I got very tired of people flying or using my flag.  I had several flags over the years per boat.

Since everyone if flying pirate flags these days I went further back in history and took one from my ancestors:

Awesome flag!
On a side note. Where did you purchase your bimini and dodger if I may ask? :)

It came with the boat.

If I was buying it I would spend the extra coin and get it made out of sunbrella and on a stainless steel frame instead of aluminum frame and surelast.  I plan to replace my bimini skin and dodger skin sooner than later.  That being said I would like to do the frame on the dodger to stainless steel also because I want a different fit for the dodger.

Looks like a good time was had by all!  The Admiral and I, despite the fact that we are not East Coast Comp-o nauts had really planned to try to make it this year.  My son and his family live in Philly, a perfect excuse for a visit.  Unfortunately, the Admirals 88 YO mother in Biloxi was being transitioned from a nursing home back to her home with in home care and we needed to be there for the transition, which has not gone all that well.  We intended to bring a southern flair to the event, although judging from the pictures we could do nothing to average the hair color away from gray.:)

A fine looking (albeit not especially hirsute) motley crew!

yup a fine looking group of happy sailors! So sorry we could not make it. It's been snowing here all day. Winter has arrived and thoughts of sliding on snow have taken over the desire to sail, though not the desire to think about sailing!

Looking forward to the CBMWG and encourage folks to come even if not blessed with being on the best cruising grounds in the US!

Cheers.

Nice video, Kevin. Thanks for posting it. A note on the BBB (er, the Burlington Bristol Bridge): Many moons ago (circa 1964) I was introduced to the BBB... during a a blizzard! Back then most cars were even wider than today's. To add to the fun, the PA side had a wicked "S" curve. But, the BBB is child's play compared to the Washington Crossing Bridge. Now, that one's a real challenge. Totally scary for anything bigger than a (not so) Smart car!

Barb and I really enjoyed the gathering at the King George and it's always wonderful to get together with our sailing friends. We miss those that couldn't make it and look forward to sailing with our fellow ComPac-O-Nauts come the Spring.

nice job, Kevin.  It was great to get to meet you guys..   we certainly enjoyed the afternoon - both the company and the meal!    There is a rails to trails bike route ( D and L national corridor ) from  White Haven ( just south of Wilkes Barre)  to Bristol..  one of the things on our list  is to take three or four days to  make that trip and camp along the way..

I hope that the  2016 sailing season is full of fun and adventure for you..  looking forward to reading your  stories!   jt

Thanks....
We are taking part in the 5 Boro Bike Tour in May. You start in Staten Island and head over the Verrazano Bridge, I don't think Lesa is gonna make it. :D
