I know it's a bit early (Pegasus hasn't even gotten her bottom wet yet), but I figured that I'd suggest the last weekend in September (25,26,27) as a target date for BBB-2015 (the biggest and grandest yet!). In years past the weather gods have been very kind. Hopefully, they will continue their benevolence.
Let the discussion, and sign-ups begin!
Marty K.
P.S. Pegasus sports a new compass. I should be able to find Tice's without too much trouble!
Marty: Thanks for taking the lead! I've been way too busy with work and other worthwhile endeavors to even think about it. That weekend works well for me.
Bob23
I just penciled those dates in on my calendar, so far, they are good on our end.
Elk River
Ok...so the game's afoot! Let's get the ball rolling and thanks to Marty! You are hereby promoted to Chief Instigator!!
Bob23
Thanks? I've been accused of worse, I guess. This is what happens in retirement, you
think you've got plenty of time to do things... ain't so!
Had a real nice Independence Day celebration at my hovel, great family turn-out, decent
weather (a day late, but that's okay, we waited) and tons of good eatin.
Hope we get a ton of ComPacs out on Barnegat Bay. I'm thinking pretty much the same as
last year, good launch facilities in the area (Forked River), but suggestions are
certainly encouraged. And Bob, please dream up an activity we can participate in.
Rowboat races are a good starter now that Mike K. has a contender. And maybe body
surfing competition on the beautiful Atlantic Ocean. Damn the Portugese Man O Wars and
sharks! Really, the beach at Island Beach State Park is absolutely heaven, no lie! An
evening bon-fire with marshmallows and Kazoos at the ready would be fun.
Marty K./Chief Instigator
Well, count me in as a "definite maybe". If I go, it will be by myself so far... and I'm not sure I can handle launching the P-21 off a trailer by myself. (I think Cathay will help with getting it on the trailer?)
I think the sailing will be OK solo, it's just that monster mast and launching that has me a little spooked compared to the little Legacy we used last time. I did rig a mast raising system that kinda sorta works OK, but is a PITA to use.
Also, last time we launched the little Legacy from Oyster Creek, a little south of Forked River. It was OK for the 16" draft of the Legacy, but I almost had to dunk my car underwater to get it off the trailer due to the shallow ramp. With the deeper draft (2') and the taller trailer of the Precision 21, I'm hoping that the ramps that you guys launched from will be more forgiving? Where was that on the Forked River?
If I do attend, I can't bring my new WM hard dinghy for the rowing races. Marty, I know how much you love to row circles around us at anchor and act as photographer, but it just weighs too much for me to move alone! And I don't have a pickup truck to carry it from the Chesapeake. If it's any consolation, I can bring my blowup pool toy boat. You can't win any races against Bob's dinghy, but you can use it to row around to your hearts content and take great pictures!
Mike K. - However you can come, by all means join the crowd. If Cathay can help you get it onto the trailer, I'm sure you'll find plenty of help at Barnegat. Brad/Lily and I launched from Forked River (near the Captain's Inn) and it wasn't bad at all. Plenty of H2O under the keel. 5 bucks in, 5 bucks out.
Too bad about the dink. But, leave your blow-up toy at home, Pegasus has an inflatable on board w/motor mount. Been looking for an excuse to use it. Hmm, Bob's dink vs my inflatable WITH 2hp motor!
Marty
Mike:
We'll be available to help with the mast raising and launching. I thought last years idea of starting out with dinner at the Captains Inn went well. The Elks stayed on their 19 and I stayed on my 23 that night in adjoining slips. I do remember the outside music being a little loud but we all survived it. The next morning was a group launch before we headed to Tice's.
Bob23
Sounds good. Thanks for the launch/load help guys.
Psst- Marty- Isn't using a motor in the rowing race a little bit like cheating? A 2 HP motor is pretty small--maybe you could hide it under a sail cover. Don't worry, I won't tell Bob what's under the cover, and I'll say the putt-putt sound is just my coffee percolator. Mum's the word....
I won't be able to get to BBB'15. That weekend I'll be presiding over the Smith Mountain Lake Wine Festival.
TG
Mike - Yeah, sail cover should do the trick. Plus I do have oars. I can fake it. Think Bob will notice that the oars are feathered all the time? After all, he'll be behind me!!!
Tim - What are you doing?! Wine Festival!! We'll probably lose some of the non-PBR drinkers. Hey, we'll miss you. What are your plans for late September 2016?
All - Any thoughts on the date(s)? I don't think it's cast in concrete, yet. I do know that October could be a problem for me and Bob is good with the current date. How about you guys - Mike, Brad, etc.
Marty K.
The last weekend in every September, as long as I am married to my wife(while she's the executive director of the SML Regional Chamber of Commerce) I will be at the Wine Festival. BTW, We have a great Craft Beer Section there as well.🍺 sorry Bob, no PBR
TG
Marty,
That date you picked (Sept 25-27) was pretty good with me. I can't do it after that at all...due to me playing nurse for a couple weeks due to a pre-scheduled surgery for Cathay. So I have to have the boat out of the water for the season by the end of September, so the BBB would be my "last hurrah" for the season. It would give me an excuse to pull it off the mooring and onto the trailer for one last adventure before the snow starts flying (boo!)
I can't do it the weekend before either, as we're chartering a sailboat down near Annapolis for a 3 day wedding anniversary cruise. The weekend before (Sept 12,13) might be viable for me also.
Mike
Okay, that leaves September 11,12,13 and 25,26,27. How's that work for Bob and Tim?
Marty
Either dates work for me. I hope Tim can make it so we can put to rest, once and for all, his claims about his super fast 19. So, where is our friend Allen?
Bob23
September 11,12,13 is good for me,
TG
Okay, looks like we have a date: SEPTEMBER 11,12 AND 13. In case of a nor-easter we still have the following weekend (sorry Tim). Now it's time for me to try and stay quiet until the CLR event has happened. Lots and lots to do on Pegasus.
Marty K.
I'm glad you got the ball rolling early, Marty. I really don't have the time right now with the CLR and Blackburn Challenge in a little over a week. Actually, the Blackburn is just training for the BBB rowing race. I hear that you and Cap't Elk are coming back with a vengeance!!!!
Bob23
OMG! I made a big boo, boo! My youngest son is getting married on September 12th! What to do?
Marty K.
I am considering attending also, if stars align, and you'll accept. I'm relative new to the forum, I bought an Eclipse earlier this year (and met/sailed with Mike K once +/- again this week).
Weekend of 25-7 looks preferable for me. 11-13 might be tougher for me to make, but potential.
Marty, Marty, Marty, Marty!
What about the weekend after the wedding? The19th?
Marty, what to do? The obvious solution is to have your son hold the wedding at BBB! Simple, see?
Tim - Works for me!
Bob - I already tried that. Thought it was a reasonable compromise. nada.
Ikm - Hope you can make it with your Eclipse.
BBB-2015 is looking bigger and better.
Is everyone okay with September 19,20,21? I heard that a nor-easter is predicted for both the previous and later weekends!
Marty K.
Hi Guys,
Marty, it looks like we'll never have everyone's schedule sync up. Such is life for the BBB instigator job....
As I mentioned in a previous post of possible free weekends, I can't make the weekend of Sept 19-21. I already booked a 3 day bareboat charter from Annapolis to St. Michaels MD for our wedding anniversary.
I'm not saying don't have the BBB that weekend, I'm just saying I can't attend. If you guys do make it that weekend, I'll be thinking about you as I cross the Chesapeake Bay!
As a side note, I invited Larry (lkm) who is a new owner of an Eclipse, and he's mulling it over, depending on the final date. But I haven't seen previous attendees weigh in such as EagleEye or Elk River. Do you think they saw the post? Should we send them some e-mails in case they haven't seen the posting?

Marty, it looks like we'll never have everyone's schedule sync up. Such is life for the BBB instigator job....
Well, if you can't come, what's the point! Ha, ha, just kidding. Of course that means that Tim may have run out of excuses! I'm sure you won't be feeling any pain on your cruise with Cathay. Have a wonderful time on Chesapeake Bay.
Hopefully, Larry will not be scared off by the likes of Bob or me or the rest of the motley crew.
Hey Brad and Allen: "Are you out there?!"
Marty K.
Hi Guys:
Unfortunately for you, I am still here. The 18th to the 20th of Sept. won't work for us as we are booked into a truck camper rally that weekend. The original idea of 25 - 27 Sept. does work for us, however. Right now, Blue Heaven is on her trailer hopefully headed to Wellfleet on Cape Cod, leaving tomorrow, the 20th. I have to load the camper on and then see how well the trailer fits at the coupler. I have to make up some longer safety chains, also.
With all those dates being thrown around, I say again that I have to stick with the original idea: 25 - 27 Sep.
Elk River
Boy, oh boy... what a can of worms (that yours truly opened)! It seems that September 25,26 and 27 are the dates that most can attend. I was going to post a poll, but it seems that option has vanished. So, please yea or nay me regarding these date(s).
Marty K.
P.S. Hope those attending CLR have a great time and perfect weather.
Mike is a "YEA" for Sept 25-27.
Once the date does get set in "concrete", I will ask my nephew if he wants to come out with us in his CP16 or come along with me. And I'll ask his dad if he can carry all our beer and wine in his stinkpot with its refrigerator and a real head!
Mike
I'll just have to forgo the BBB 2015. BUT I'd like to have you guys down here in later Oct for a SML-CPR if anybody can make it.
Marty, the poll feature is still there, just look slightly off the right of the "reply" button on the bottom of posts.
Tim: As much as I know now, count me in!!! Any date in September is ok with me.
Tim:
The last two weekends in October work for me at the moment...
Elk River
Please, please , you're confusing me with these new dates for a different event in the BBB thread!
If there's a different event for SML-CPR (where is that?) then please start a different thread!

Something to really look forward to. Hopefully, I and others can make it to your beautiful lake. Please advise us of a preferred date.
Marty K.
P.S. Thanks, Salty 19, I think we are finally settled on September 25,26 and 27. Looking forward to a great turnout.
Mike:
Tim is talking about something brewing down in Virginia at Smith Mountain Lake. He is listed as a Fleet Admiral, Commodore, so I leave it to someone else to hint about a new thread...
Elk River
So far, I'm still potential (for both events). Have to make checks with the mate, but sounds fun and 'have boat - will travel!'
Larry
Since Tim is the instigator of the Smith Mountain Lake CPR, I'll leave it to him to start a new thread to end any confusion about these two events. The BBB 2015 is a rather casual ( read: barely organized) get together of Compac sailors and those who wished they were at Tice's Shoals, Island Beach State Park, NJ in Barnegat Bay. Since Marty started this up for this year, I'm gonna let him take the ball but I'll do whatever I can to help coordinate this epic event.
So, If I read the above correctly, the real set in concrete dates are September 25-27. Am I correct? And Marty, are we planning a similar start like last year with dinner at the Captains Inn, a launch on Saturday morning and heading over to Tices? I could try to secure some slips if that's the case. I guess we have a bit of time yet so this thing is in it's infancy.

Yep, it seems that the concrete has finally set for September 25-27. Captain's Inn is fine, a bit up-scale, but not like we do this every day. Please look into some slips, Bob. Maybe we can get a group deal. Last year, I spent the first night on the hard and was not comfortable at all (humidity). Second night, in the water, was great. See ya soon!
Marty K.
This is kind of after the summer season here so it may be easier to procure boat slips. For the newbees who may be considering attending this epic event, last year 2 of us got slips within a short walking distance of the Captains Inn, where we enjoyed a grand dinner. We then retired to our respective boats for a restful evenings sleep to the soothing sounds of the 1000 decibel rock band about 500 feet away except for yours truly who couldn't sleep and returned to the bar for a few "Quila's" and some love music. In late September, however, this may not happen as the summer crowds are gone. Anyway, the next morning it was off to Tice's Shoals, Island Beach State Park where the actual site of the BBB takes place. We raft up, tell lies, eat, tell lies, got into a rowing race and, yes more lies and then some drink, if we choose to imbibe. This is a very low key affair with no real agenda although we could entertain the idea of a race.
Let's set a date for any attenders to commit so I can get an idea of slips. Ok, Marty- take it away!!!
B23
Hi Bob,
I would like a slip for Friday night, Sept 25th. Thanks for the warning about the loud music - I will bring earplugs for sleeping.
As for the Marina at the Captains Inn - Seems to be a flat $50 for the night? Is that where you stayed, near Tiki Bar?
But they are not listed as having a boat ramp. To those with trailers, where did everyone launch from, and where do you park your car and trailers? It seems that there are 2 ramps on either side of the Captains Inn. One ramp is at Townsend Marina (upriver to the west) ramp cost is $5 each way, and the other at the Marina at Southwinds (downriver towards the mouth of Forked River, at the end of Lacey Road), ramp fees not listed on website.
Uh, take what away? Am I supposes to steal something? Arrr, I see. Ahoy! Attention all
ye salties and sea dawgs and their beauties - all CPY's and even some stealth craft are
hereby invited to come and share the good times at Island Beach State Park come
September 25-27.
Well, me hearties, let's see what crawled out of the bung hole o'er at ye old
Captain's Inn in Forked River Neu Joisey on Friday nite. Then come morn, we be off on
our yachts to an anchorage (Tice's Shoals 39.8398° N, 74.1087° W) across the Barnegat
Bay after a hearty breakfast. Ne'er fear the shoals, they be quite soft!
One word of warning: Don't follow meself at the helm of Pegasus 'less you enjoy
walking (see BBB-2014)!
Arrr! Let's hope for fair winds and kind weather. Yo-ho-ho and bottles of rum, beer
and wine (for the lasses?) are okay to bring. Don't forget ye grub and vittles. Bring
some pieces o' eight but leave ye dueling pistols and cutlasses at home, if ye will.
Any cannons less than 16" bore will be confiscated.
Now be the time to start sign'in up. If ye can only make one night, that's okay, too.
Floggings will be suspended for the weekend (not sure about keel-hauling!).
Cap'n Marty
Mike and all:
I may be able to negotiate the skip fee (Ah...that's slip fee, as in boat slip!) down since we'd be having dinner at the restaurant. Last year there was a bit of confusion about this and the BBB came together rather fast. I'll try to stop up this weekend and talk to the owner. If that doesn't work, I know the owner of Townsends so maybe we can procure slips there. It's a short walk between the two.
Arrgggg!!!!
Bob23
The Skip Fee had better be a very Large Fee.
Hey, Tim - Isn't SKIPPING a popular sport in New Joisey?
Unknown CP16 captain.
Lots of funny guys around here. See correction!
Hey Bob, we really do love you!!!
All slip fees are to be paid in advance in cash to me!!!!
Hey Folks! Here is the scoop and what I have learned. Do NOT have a hip replacement before sailing season! What was I thinking? I guess I kinda figured that if I had it done in May I should be all healed up by July. Maybe if I was 25.
Anyway, things would have gone better if I wasn't in such a hurry to get back in condition because I overdid the PT thing and that set the healing back a bit. But all is well and with some luck I may get the Madame in the water this summer/fall. (When was it that Bob dunked Koinonia kast year?)
As far as BBB-15 goes, the spirit is willing but the body...not so much. Reading the posts have been an inspiration but it is not likely that I can get my act together in a month. ??? who knows? I would really like to meet lkm and Figero. Imagine..2 Eclipses at BBB. Koinonia would be beside herself.
eagleye has not flown the coop.
Best to ya gents!
-Allen
Allen:
Just thinking about you and hope you make a full recovery!!! It won't be the same without you and your highly polished anchor at BBB!!! Recover, my friend, and remember that the 4th annual Mid Winter Gathering of the East Coast Compac-o-nauts is just around the corner.
Bob
Eagleye - Hope you knit fast! Don't want to miss you at BBB-2015. I'd invite you to share the joy of Pegasus, but I doubt that you'd enjoy all the comfort of a septuagenarian (that'd be me) in the 16 footer! Even on a great day, there is a bit of pain!
BTW - I need you to bring extra butane.
Bob - Talk about pushing the clock! However, I've got just the place!!! With a view of the water, uh, maybe ice???
Marty K.
Though my CP23 will be on the hard I'd love to join in on the dinner! Perhaps Bob23 has room for an extra Bilge Rat on Koinonia?!
You bet! There's plenty of room so c'mon over! We'll talk about it over dinner, drinks!!!
Awesome!

Allen.. I was wondering why we had not hear much from you this summer.. timing is everything in life.. hope you never have to go through hip replacement again, but if you do.. mid winter might be better in terms of getting prepped for sailing season! jt

That was the plan Jason, but a cancelation came up and I was tired of dealing with it.
Took the winter cover off the "Madame" today and I will pick away at getting her ready for a future sail.
-Allen
Wishing all of you the best for BBB 2015. Em and I have great memories of the event last year. Haven't finished redoing the O'Day 23 yet but the Mirage has been in the lake all season and we've sailed a decent amount. Kind of a tough summer, my best friend died of cancer in July and our family pet of 15 years (a cat named Isis) died a week later. Spent a lot of time at the hospital with my friend and then some time sorting things after. Thanks goodness for the escapes of sailing and motorcycling. Em sends her best as well. Carpe Diem!
Sean
Good to hear from you. Sorry to hear of this sad news of your best friend. And yes, I remember Emily telling us of Isis the cat. We lost our Siberian Husky this year so I know how you feel. Give Emily a hug from me- I still have photos of her clutching the bag of potato chips!!!!
Bob23
It seems the BBB 2015 is evolving. It also seems that Marty and I are co- coordinators, and by the way- it's his 73rd birthday today so a big shout out to the remarkable Captain Volvo! Have a great day!
We should get some kind of head count here relatively soon. I'll be visiting the Captains Inn so I'm gonna to out on a limb and tell 'em about 6 boats may be attending so I'll see If can secure free slips if we have dinner there. If they are uncooperative, I'll go next door to Townsends where I know the owner. More soon, gents!
Bob23
Thanks Bob and Marty for all the work getting us into the water for BBB.
Thanks particularly for checking out the marinas. For your "headcount", as I mentioned before, I would like a slip on Friday night.
Question though.... For those of you who trailered your boats to BBB in previous years, what Marina do you launch your boats from, and where do you park your truck/trailer for the weekend? Seems that Captains Inn doesn't have a ramp, but there are 2 in close proximity on either side of the Inn. I'm coming by myself, and would like some help putting my mast up, so I'd like to meet up with you guys Friday. Thanks!

Will do Bob and thanks. Sorry for the loss of your dog.
Best,

Mike:
Last year Lily and I launched at Townsends and parked (at their suggestion) on the wide apron between the street and stored boats. They charged for launching and retrieval but not parking.
Elk River
Ditto, me too, Mike. Pretty easy launch and retrieve. 5 bucks in, 5 bucks out. And I'm sure you'll have plenty of help.
Marty
P.S. Don't worry, the Captain's Inn will help drain your wallet.
This year's BBB is shaping up to be a great one! And we'll have the legendary K3vin aboard, the originator of the original Barnegat Bay Bash but I think it was called by another name back then.
Bob23
That's really great! I hope K3vin is pleased with your new moniker for this enjoyable event. Looking forward to meeting all at the Inn and when we drop anchor at Tice's.
Marty K.
A slight misspelling on my part. It's K3v1n. Ha!!! This is just an alert to start training for the inevitable dingy race that made it's debut last year. I don't know how many dinks will be there, but I'll have mine and we can do a timed race! And...there may be a first place prize! We have a few handicaps: Kev just underwent shoulder surgery recently and can't lift anything heavier than a 16 ounce bottle of beer or Dark and Stormy (his choice) and I may have retorn my right rotator cuff in which case I will be lifting many beers and dark and stormies!!!
Last year there were 3 contestants: My self, Capt. Elk, and Marty. Although it was an unfair race (I'd be training for the Blackburn), the final results were closer than I would have guessed. It's all fun.
Bob23
lol.....The very first one was called the 'Com-Pac Convergence' back in 2007 but later changed to 'Barnegat Bay Bash' because we let other vessels take part.
I found some of my old adverts. :)

Is your brother coming to the BBB? We'll allow him but we have a strict "no politics" rule. Well, it's not strict, just understood.
Bob23
I just put deposit on Com-Pac 19 "terrapin" in Loenardo NJ.
Wii need time for her refit, so will be on Barngat 2016.
Current boat, Boston whaler harpoon 5.2 on bay now, in brick, nj. Don't be surprised to see me try to sneak in.
It is a good day....
Hey, Finbar Beagle - Better not let Bob23 find out! He's loaded with 24 pounders (or is that PBR?). Nah, just kidding, just bring along a copy of the deposit or else! Geez, am I starting to sound like Bob?!
Marty K.
Chief Instigator (temp.)
81 CP16 Pegasus
P.S. I'll let Bob23 welcome you (be prepared).
Thanks, MKBLK, use day, just sold BW Harpoon, now down to stealth Bauer 12...might need to get inner tube to tow cooler. Last sail with "Waterford" today....looking forward to weighted keel again
Well, at least the Bauer 12 will be harder to hit with Bob's 24 pounders! Plus, I've got an 8' inflatable for that cooler. :)
I know that BBB-2015 is fast approaching, but don't despair. If you can't get the 19 in the drink on time, I'm sure you can find a ride with one of us. I know that I'll have an empty bunk... but, if you want more comfort there will be somewhat larger CP's there; even a Precision 21.
Marty K.
81 CP16 Pegasus
P.S. That Bauer 12 looks real sweet. I just bought an old 12' Super Snark to hit the local lake with my grand-kids. Only weighs 50# and rigs in 5 minutes, so is easy for an old dude like me to "toss" on top of the wagon. The 300# Bauer would be a bit much for me (if only I were 40 years younger!).
Em and I had a blast at the BBB last summer. Anyone looking for crew? One 6' adult and one 5'5" 12 year old girl. We'd stay at a motel Friday and then just need someplace to sleep on Saturday night. We could bring beer, food and -- dare I say -- chips. I do snore sometimes but Em's good company.
Cheers,
Sean
As a a first timer, I'm curious about logistics on this.
It seem Dinner Friday. What time?
And are reservations needed, or does one just crash on the place and look for rowdy behavior?
Also, do folks generally get a motel for Friday night then launch in AM, or launch and get a slip, or what?
I'm sure there is some variability here, but looking for suggestions?
Larry
ps. Really hoping to see Alan and his Madame Z, if he can make it. Alan, I hope your hip is improving.
Larry:
Marty is the chief instigator, Bob23 is doing the legwork. They will probably need a headcount for reservations for dinner and slips. Last year some us of slept on board, either in the water or on the hard, another boatless party utilized a motel. I am sure more information will be forthcoming this week.
Elk River
I was a guest and very much a newbie last year but my sense of the basic flow, in 2014, was this.
Friday night we all met for dinner at the Captain's Inn. Someone, probably Bob, reserved a table for all of us. We ate, drank and talked. My daughter and I spent the night at a motel, three people slept in two docked boats and one (Marty I think) slept in his boat on a trailer. Some people launched Friday and docked at the Marina, one launched early Saturday morning and one (Mike) launched somewhere else nearby (maybe early Saturday?). Bob and Marty can fill in what the official plan is for 2015.
Saturday, we met up for breakfast and packed the boats with food and gear. We headed out to open water from the docks on Forked River. Some of us, sort of, kept in touch by radio. Some impromptu racing ensued and also a great game of "Where's Marty" (almost like "Where's Waldo" but played live on the water). Eventually three of the boats anchored near each other. Then we went swimming, ate dinner, drank and talked. Bob graciously hosted Emily and I on his 23. Sometimes the boats were rafted up and sometimes not. I believe some anchors drifted in the night, which kept things interesting, but all was well. Next morning Mike and Cathay rafted up with us for breakfast. More talking, swimming, dingy racing, etc. All of this was very impromptu and informal. One really cool thing about the location (a surprise for me who did not know the area) was that swimming in to shore (Tice's Shoal) and then walking across a road lead us to a huge sandy beach on the broad ocean (Island Beach State Park). Great beach! About lunchtime or so we headed back to the marina.
So, all in all a very casual and relaxed event with great company. This year, folks might want to share a master cell phone list so that all folks can find each other at Tice's. Or maybe its more fun to just search.
Cheers,
Larry - Bob23 will be making arrangements for dining and slip usage for the group. At this point, being the hammer is about to drop, I'd like to turn my Instigator duties over to Bob23 to avoid over complicating things (if that's okay with you, Bob?).
Marty K.
Remember to bring cash if you want to hit the beach at tices shoal. They are now charging boaters for beach access.
Marty, Bauer is on little trailer, I have issues putting kayak on car roof these days, lol.
I'll keep up with the posts, maby me, wife and "Cork" ( b12) will launch with group, and try to keep up for a bit.
Today's sail north of the rt 37 bridge was glorious...
Marty:
That's ok. I don't mind if you bail on me!!! Hahaa!!! Since the BBB is only about 2 1/2 weeks away, I'd like to get a roster together so I have a number for dinner on Friday night and the number of boat slips needed. Can you fellers get back to me this week? I'd like to finalize this by next weekend 9/12.
I'm not sure if Tice's will be charging after Labor day which, by the way, is today!!!! If they do, it's 3 bucks per person if you enter the beach after 10.
Bob23
Thanks, Bob -
I certainly plan on attending both dinner and a slip. Don't want to sleep on the hard again - didn't like it. You have my cell.
Marty
Future BBB ers:
I've snooping around. Captains Inn slips are 50 clams and they will not budge on the price. Latitudes on the River is 2 bucks a foot and it's a way cooler place to eat. I can make reservations there for the slips but I'll need to know fairly soon. Latitudes is on the Same road as Captains just a stones throw to the east. You trailer guys can still launch at Townsends; I was there today also. But they have no slips available at all. There are marinas on the other side of the river but I didn't have enough time to check them all out. Maybe Latitudes will budge on their per foot price if we have 4 boats or so but I don't have a final count at this point.
What's the general consensus, mates? And who is throwing in with this lowly lot of boat rats?
Bob23
(ps: While the long range forecast is not reliable 2 and a half weeks out, they are calling for temps down into the 50's but up into the 70's. I'll keep and eye on this. Who knows? Maybe we can get a hurricane to drop in for a visit!!! )
Hi Bob,
Thanks for the recon on the rendezvous site. I've never been there, but was checking online on ActiveCaptain.com, and couldn't find a marina with the Latitudes name. However, I did find a restaurant named that, and it's in or near the Marina at Southwinds. Is this the one you mean?
http://www.marinaatsouthwinds.com/about.php
On their website, they say that transient slips are $3/foot, which would be more expensive than at the Captains Inn? I did find Southwinds on Activecaptain.com, and it lists $2/foot, but that was old info from 2012. Is the price you got an "after season" or special price?
Yes, I would like a slip on Friday night. It doesn't really matter to me which marina we go with. I like the Latitudes/Southwinds option, as it's the closest to the Barnegat Bay, and would cut down on river motoring time. By the way, Southwinds also has a boat ramp with "ample rig parking".
...And for those looking for a boat to crew on (Sean and Em?), I will be solo on my Precision 21. It's not palatial, but it does have 2 quarter berths and a V-Berth.
If you do want to come along Sat/Sun, we'd need to find a place to store all the stuff at night (I usually store it in V-berth). ALSO ANOTHER BIG CONDITION: It's highly likely that for a 2 day sail, the Porta-Potty will get some use. If either of you Do the "DO" in the Porta-Potty how about you cleaning it out when we get back to the marina?
Do the restaurants charge dockage if you only eat there and then leave?
Elk River
My daughters have a school 'fall festival' they want to attend on Friday (this is not critical, but a request). If so then I'll be arriving somewhat late on Friday (e.g. 7:30-8pm)
If dinner is still going on, I could drop in.
I'm leaning toward the idea of spending the night on the hard, then launch in AM. But a lot for me would depend on the parking situation.
I'm not crazy about arriving this late then setup and launching then finding my way over to the slip in the dark.
On the other hand putting up my boom tent requires a mast raise, so if parking were near the launch point and no trees/lines between parking and ramp -- that could work, but otherwise it would be a lot of tear down/setup in am.
Is there parking at Latitudes or Townsend's where I could setup and sleep on the hard near the ramp, and then launch in AM?
Else, I would tell girls we need to leave earlier, and I would get a slip.
Let's see: Gonna try to answer in the correct order:
Mike: I was told by Sean who apparently is the harbor master that it's 2 clams per foot. And thanks for the ramp info, I'll call him back to clarify about that. I'd be nice if we could all start in the same place.
Elk: I don't think they charge. And myself, being the quitenseential cheapskate was thinking of anchoring out but as I'm prone to have a drink or two, maybe just paying the man his 46 bucks might be safer.
Ikm: I assume (never a good thing) that you could sleep on the hard at Latitudes and then launch there also but I will get some more info from Sean this weekend.
Looking over some paperwork Sean gave me, I need some information from each of you: name, address phone number, vessel length and name. The do require payment in order to hold the reservation and I don't mind putting for all the slips on my credit card. Any cancellations must be made before 48 hours of scheduled arrival so we'll need to keep that in mind as we get closer if the weather turns bad.
So as I see it, this is our roster so far:
Me and Kevin on my 23
Elk and Mrs. Elk- CP 19
Marty and his CP 16
Mike and Precision 21 (Do I smell a race?)
Larry- what boat are you sailing?
If you don't see your name here and and planning to attend, please respond quickly, ok?
I'll post more here as this unfolds. For you newbies, remember this is a highly unscheduled event. In other words, no one is actually at the wheel driving! The loose plan is to meet on Friday, help out whoever needs help setting up, heading over to Latitudes for dinner, drinks, drinks and then some drinks before drinks...wandering back to the boat and getting up bright and early Saturday morning to head over to Tice's Shoals for the weekend. Last year we got together for breakfast but for the life of me, I can't remember if it was Saturday morning or Sunday morning. Maybe someone with a better memory can help out here.
Anyone is free to depart whenever they want. Remember to bring any food and drink (and water) with you. There is no restaurant at Tice's although there are some lovely, aromatic composting bathroom facilities.
More soon, mates! Let the adventure begin!!

We went out to breakfast Saturday morning. Sunday morning we were on the water off Tice's and did the dingy race.
Cheers,
Sean
I thought so. That may work this year also. Any ideas, gents? Breakfast Saturday at the diner or directly off to Tice's for some swimming?
Bob23
Mike and I have been talking further online. Em and I will be joining him if all goes as planned. So we will be two more people there for dinner on Friday night. Looking forward to seeing the gang again.
Brad, we're going to bring a bag of chips for you and Lady Elk alone. What kind?
Cheers,
Sean
Oh no, the potato chip thing rears it's ugly head.... Sour Cream & Onion may keep me keep me quiet, thanks. Don't let Bob know, he'll tell you to get the smallest sampler bag you can find!
We will probably eat supper with everybody and then raft up with a neighbor's power boat in the last lagoon closest to the bay for the night. Breakfast? After seeing Marty's home video, I'm still a little leery of riding in his Volvo (!!). We'll play the breakfast idea by ear.
Looking forward to the festivities,

Emily just saw the picture and was laughing her head off.
6:30 dinner is fine but we can't leave until Em's school gets done at 3 and it's a very long drive (through rush hour traffic, unfortunately). So we'll maybe join y'all for desert. Don't wait for us because dinner would be too late.

Hello Everyone,
My name is John and I am local. I pick up my Com Pac 16 Sept 19, and she is ready to sail.
I would love to meet up with everyone at Tysons shoals. I would enjoy meeting other Com pac owners and learning a thing or two. I can't make the dinner because I work till 9pm.
John
John:
Keep an eye on this thread for news of breakfast Saturday morning. Marty will be ecstatic to have another 16 to hob nob with. If your schedule doesn't allow for some of this, just show up a Tice's. Bob23 will be more than happy to collect your $5,000 cash for the Com-Pac initiation fee. I doubt much mercy will be shown by him for a fellow Garden Stater, especially pertaining to the aforementioned fee. Bring a few stale PBR's, though, maybe that will help.
Elk River
Welcome John!
I hope your first shakedown cruise with the CP16 to Tice's shoal works out well! It will be good to have you along. Just let us know if you need any help or info for your Saturday launch.
And don't worry about the $5000 initiation fee payable to Bob23. He took my hand-written IOU last year, and I can lend you my magic invisible ink pen so you can write out your very own IOU.
By the way, I think we typically anchor a little bit south of the bayside stairway at Tice's shoal to try to keep away from the powerboats. Just look for all the masts!
Mike (Precision 21 for this voyage)
Thank you guys for the nice words. I will be putting in Saturday morning, I might dump in at the Barnagat dock, because the parking lot is large. For me to sail from West Creek to T.S. is a longer trip than I want.
I do have one question, they still make Pabts Blue Ribbon?!?! Hahah
John
Ok John,
2 years ago I launched from the Barnegat ramp. Since the wind was out of the north, it was a LONG slow beat to windward. Then the wind died completely, and it was a long motor towards Tices. We were almost there, but then I got a call from my nephew who ground his CP16 near the Barnegat Light. We never did make it to Tices shoal that year, but that's another long story.
Needless to say, last year I launched a bit closer to Tices from Oyster Creek. You might want to check the forecast that day, and if there's any northerly component to the wind, you may want to consider driving further north to launch?

Thank you , I will put in where everyone else is then. Thanks for the advise. It isn't a long drive for me
I am looking forward to the event.
John: How local are you? I live in Manahawkin but sail out of Surf City. We should get together sometime.
All: The ramp at Southwinds is more expensive than at Townsends so let's stick with Townsends Marina for you trailer launching guys. 5 clams each way, if I remember correctly. 221 Lacey Road, Forked River, NJ. It's a 10 minute motor to Southwinds Marina which is right next to Latitudes where we'll be eating dinner, hopefully outside but if it's a bit nippy, we'll eat inside.
More soon as the details unfold. I'll be meeting with the southwinds marina manager today to firm up everything at which time I'll pay for the slips. Let's hope for good weather although it most likely will be colder and we'll be official into fall at the time of the Bash.
Bob23
Hi Bob, I am from West Creek. We should get together soon. Here is my cell 609-290-5958, call or text. I will be putting in at Parkertown, or at an investment property in L.E.H.
John
Wow! It's looking like a great turn-out. Sure hope the weather gods are with us. Pegasus' Johnson 2hp is sporting a new impeller! Seems to have solved last year's overheating issue. So, wind or no wind, Tice's or Bust! (Well, maybe not the "bust" part!) Can't wait to see the old faces and meet the new.
BTW - If anyone can't make dinner Friday evening, that's okay, we'll see you in the morning for breakfast or at Tice's. Also, if you need a hand or two, don't be shy, there should be plenty of willing hands.
See you all soon,
Marty K.

John:
I keep my boat (23) in Surf City. The fastest I've ever made it to Tice's is about 3 hours. It has taken much longer than that depending on wind and tide. So leave yourself enough time. We should get together sometime. I have not sailed that much south of the bridge- did a little exploration down as far as West Creek. Although unmarked, I was surprised now much deep water is down there.
Bob23
And, yes! they still make PBR!!!
Ok here is what I believe to be the final roster of boats needing slips:
Me- Compac 23
Marty- Compac 16 Pegasus
Mike K- Precision 21
Lary - Compac Eclipse
Please feel free to add to this if it's incorrect in any way. If I've left you out, message me or text to 609 709 3910, my cell. The cost is 2 bucks per foot so you guys can do the math. I'm paying in advance this morning to reserve the slips so we can settle up at dinner. Please note: if you need to cancel for any reason, that's ok but it must be before 48 hours of the 25th of September. Since check in time is 1 pm, I'd need to hear from you before noon on Wednesday September 23rd if you need to cancel. Please do not cancel here as I do not check this forum throughout the day. Use my cell phone only. If you text, please include your name as I do not have everyone's number in my phone. Thanks,
Trailer launching should be done at Townsends, location is a few posts above. It's cheaper and there is parking, although a bit tight. We should have each others cell numbers. I have Johns and Martys so you other guys, can you post 'em here or if you don't want to, PM me or text to my phone.
On Friday night, we'll be dining at Latitudes instead of the Captains Inn but I think they have the same capacity to drain your wallet. Kevin, long time sailing and construction buddy, has eaten there a few times and we joined he and his wife there a few weeks ago. Good food and drinks, fun atmosphere and we can eat outside if the weather cooperates.
To review, the BBB is a barely organized get together of like minded (some would say feeble minded) Compac sailors although we do allow the other kind of sailors to attend too. Location is at Tice's shoals on Island Beach State Park, NJ and Marty was kind enough to post the coordinates on a few posts up. There is a composting bathroom within walking distance of the anchorage. Please bring anything you'll want to eat and drink as there are no, repeat no restaurants located on the state park near where we'll be staying. It is just a short walk over the dunes to one of the finest beaches you're likely to ever see and although there may not be lifeguards there, I've never drowned there so it's pretty safe.
Oh- please keep an eye on the weather and wind direction. There is a good bottom for anchor holding and I've been anchored over night in a 25 know NW wind. Although not pleasant, my trusty 23 did not budge one inch.
I'll post a complete roster of the event tonight or tomorrow morning.
Bob23
So little time, so much to do! I've got to get my butt in gear. I'm in the running for Procrastinator of the Year award. I've got a list as long as my arm and every time I cross something off, I add one or two more! But, I'll be there. See ya'll at Townsend's Friday night (the 25th).
Hey Bob, can I pay in PBR's? Found a guy who has a truckload that he can't get rid of.
Marty K.
Thanks Bob,

Sorry Marty: No PBR! Just cold, hard cash!!!!
Ok. Slip reservations have been made so the game's afoot!!!!

Nice work Admiral!
My pleasure! This is shaping up to be the biggest BBB in the history of the BBB!!! Now if could get some of the old timers up here: Pedro, Becky, JT and Janet. Maybe next year!!!!
Bob23
Just saw the weather predicted for next weekend... NICE!!!!
Marty K.
P.S. Bob - What time do you think would be best for dinner Friday night?
Well, Marty:
We all know it's 5 o'clock somewhere but I was thinking around 6:30. I'll check the sunset times. How does that sound for everyone?
Now for all you wondering about the potato chips mentioned above: Last year at the BBB, I had the pleasure of having Sean and then 11 year old daughter Emily aboard my boat for the weekend. On the trip over, with Sean steering the mighty Koinonia, Emily and I discovered our mutual love for potato chips and we devised a dastardly scheme to hoard them all for ourselves!!! Bwooohahahaha! Of course, in the end we did share but it was fun planning ways to hide and devour them without giving up even one chip. Look for a possible replay!!!!
bob23
Hi Bob,
It will be great to see you and everyone again. We have to drive south through several rush hour metro areas so I can't see us arriving in the Tom's River area until maybe 9 or so. So we may miss dessert all together though I'll call you when we get close. That being the case, I have no dinner time preference because -- alas -- we may not make it to dinner. But the weather sure looks great, so far, for Saturday morning.
Cheers,

To all:
Checking the weather forecast shows strong NNE winds for Saturday. For us this means we'll be taking these winds on the nose so some long tacking to get to Tice's or some pretty we motoring. Bring plenty of fuel! Of course the upside (there's always an upside!) is smooth anchorage and a run back on Sunday to the mainland. In any event, this years BBB should be fun.
Bob23
I was wondering if anyone is anchoring at Tysons Shoals for the night, or even if it is allowed? If anyone is thinking of doing that send me an email.
John
Hey John! Yes we are staying the night at Tices Shoal(Saturday). Look for a bunch of sailboats rafted up together! :)
...email sent.

John and all:
I fly a large AMERICAN Flag (emphasis mine) from my backstay while we're there. We should have quite a nice raft up, as Kev said.
Bob23
John,
Dropping the hook at Tice's is great. You can walk, swim, row about 100 yards from shore and the bottom is soft yet good holding (50 feet of rode is good - don't ask how I know!). The depth of the water we usually anchor in is about 5 feet.
Marty K.
Be ready for a nice wind this weekend!
Weather Forecast (http://www.wunderground.com/q/zmw:08006.1.99999)
Gents: ATTENTION:
We need to closely look at the weather for this weekend to decide if we should proceed or not with the planned BBB 2015. Kevin, the ever so humble but enthusiastic amateur weather guru, and I have been discussing the weather for the weekend which is now including high winds and possibility of rain on Sunday. Please do some checking around on your favorite weather site and use zip code 08006. Let me know what everyone thinks.
The ENE wind direction puts the wind directly on our nose when we head over to Tice's on Saturday morning. I've done this and it's ok but wet. As I mentioned previously, bring extra fuel and raingear. My 23 is a wet boat to motor directly into the wind with. And it could take a few hours of motoring just to get to Tice's. Not trying to discourage anyone, I just want to be realistic that the conditions may not be the same as we've had in the past.
I'm gonna call Southwinds tomorrow and get them to extend our cancellation deadline to Thursday so we all should have made a decision by then. While this is a short hop for me (home waters) some of you are driving a good distance to make this the epic event that it is, albeit very loosely scheduled.

Bummer! If it looks like a washout/blowout, is the following weekend viable? I would think the bay would still be quite warm. What d'ya think?
Marty K.
Hi all,
I just got back from a 3 day weekend sailing trip going across the Chesapeake from south of Annapolis to St. Michaels MD. We didn't have any rain, but we had constant winds about the same as forecasted for Barnegat Bay this weekend. It made for very challenging sailing with high seas, and lots of action and concentration needed. While I had a lot of fun sailing, the 3-5 foot seas were NOT relaxing, and the admiral had more than a touch of seasickness. Not to mention that during the 2 evenings at anchor, it sounded like being in a hurricane with lots of noise in the rigging, the boat creaking, and waves hitting the hull, with lots of rolling and pitching. And that was on a 10,000 Lb 30 foot boat. It would feel worse on a small CP. I think I got a good 3 hours sleep each night in those condition. I'm still recovering from the mental and physical drain.
I only relate this story as high winds can make for a challenging, cold wet weekend. And the extra problem of taking down masts and getting a boat ready for road travel on Sunday in high winds and rain doesn't sound like fun! So, my vote is unless things change significantly, we seriously consider rescheduling. Due to Cathay's foot surgery next week, I can't do any more sailing beyond this weekend, but if you have to reschedule, just please go ahead and have fun in more relaxed conditions!
Mike
I and Kev, the master of the weather, both agree that by Thursday, we should have a better idea of what's happening weatherwise. It seems the rain has been eliminated so far and the forecast winds have gone down a bit. I don't mind a motor or sail to windward so let's see what the general consensus is.
Fingers crossed that the ridge of high pressure keeps the rain south. Also I think we might gain a little protection from Island Beach State park while at anchor. :)
it is true that if the wind stays more from the east, we'll be in the lee of Island Beach State park.
I just spoke with the harbor master at Southwinds Marina and he's quite flexible on the cancellation time. He'll not charge my credit card until after we leave.
It'll make for a fast sail back to Forked River on Sunday! :)
Global Map of Wind (http://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/surface/level/orthographic=-72.84,44.12,1979)
Yes it will. With the boom preventer on the main and whisker pole on the genoa, we make break CP23 speed records.
Looking back on the last few postings here, let's see how the forecast plays out today. I'm thinking optimistically and bringing my boat from Surf City to Waretown this morning. From there it's a short sail to Forked River which should happen Friday mid day. "Let the wild times begin!!"
Bob23
Just a thought here-I have found weather reports from NOAA regarding Barnegat Bay to underestimate the wind speed by approx. ten miles per hour. This has been consistent throughout the summer. So if the report is for 8 to 10 knots look for 15 to 20 on the bay. I had hopes of making the Bash this year in our Compac 25 but I am an amateur musician and as luck would have it have a gig in Ocean Grove Saturday.
Ron
Hi All,
I actually like sailing in heavy wind but Emily, while she certainly has done it on Lake Champlain, doesn't especially like sailing in rough water and high wind. I'm also on my first "back to normal" day after several days of being down with a flu and fever and, with a deadline coming up fast, really need to work this weekend. I also don't want to take the chance of passing the flu to Mike or anyone else.
I'd rather be sailing but given Em's input and the timing of my being sick we're going to opt. out. We both would love to see friends old and new but I think this is the smart choice for us. Hope we can join you next year.
My apologies to Mike that we won't be there to cover the jib sheets. But I had a thought and will mention it just in case it is useful. Since 2 - 3 boats (?) are being single-handed this weekend might a combination of two sailors want to join up on just one boat? I don't know how others feel but I especially like to have a second set of hands (and more ballast weight) when the the wind gets heavy.
Cheers,
Sean
I have been quietly following the discussion regarding the 2015 bash on barnegat bay.. so sorry to miss it a second time - and sorry to hear that the weather may not cooperate.. you guys deserve a beautiful weekend! ron.. interesting to hear that you are performing in ocean grove.. we have many fond memories of the grove starting with my first visit at the age of 5 in 1965.. where are you playing? Marty and bob.. don't give up hope.. something will surely work out! jt
Lily and I will also opt out of this year's BBB. Rigging and down rigging in stiff winds is not much fun. The winds here are out of the same quadrant, but will be a bit lighter, so we will go off for a couple of days locally. We hate to miss the festivities, but as has been said already, there is always next year.
Have fun all,
Elk River
Hi guys,
I just found the NWS Marine forecast for the NJ coastal area (Link below).
http://forecast.weather.gov/shmrn.php?mz=anz451&syn=anz400
Looks like there's a small craft advisory for Friday, and for Saturday, it's calling for 20kt winds with gusts up to 30 kt. I know that may be for the Ocean side, but it can't be much less in the bay.
My inner voice is telling me it's not prudent to rig masts or sail in these conditions, especially single handed. So, as much as I hate to miss the last sailing opportunity, I think I'm going to have to bow out of the BBB 2015. If you others decide to do it, please be careful out there!

Marty K.
I've been out on the bay in 20 kt. winds and found the trip exuberating! The waves were 2 - 3 feet. Don't know how that will affect the Tice's anchorage. It was fun on a day-sail, not sure how the night would go. Hate to say it, but even though I'm a diehard, I'm beginning to have second thoughts. What say you Kevin and Bob?
Marty K.
We're still planning on doing some sailing of some sort. As you can see, nearly everyone has chickened out :) except Kev and I, you and Larry. The plan is that I'll call you and Larry tomorrow with an actual, on the scene observation of the conditions then we can make an informed decision. The forecast winds are down quite a bit from what they were. Neither Kev or Larry can make the dinner on Friday so why don't we talk on the phone tomorrow and make a plan?
Bob23
Since Pegasus hasn't even gotten her bottom wet this year, I do want to do this. I plan on being prepared for two days, but ready to cut it short, if necessary. Dinner at Latitude's still sounds good and we should have a memorable (in a good way!) sail on Saturday. Around 2pm we can decide whether or not to stay the course and spend the night at Tice's and leave for Forked River after breakfast. This gives Bob time to get home with useful NNE winds before any precip (hopefully).
Marty K.
I'll take the heat for being a mother hen on this but would Marty and Larry want to team up on one boat so as to have a two man team if the gusts get heavy?
I'm ready for the roasting on this suggestion but it's just the old sailing teacher in me.
Latest small craft advisory looks pretty darn exciting. This should be a memorable weekend for the hard-core:

Have a blast all. If anyone has e-mail access on the boat, feel free to give us some "Johnny-on-the-spot" reports of how it's going. I have to work for much of this weekend so I'll be near a computer and watching this thread.
Cheers,
Sean
Hello,
I am out, the weather is way to much for my experience level.
Have fun and be safe and please post a sail report after the weekend.
@ Bob23, thank you for organizing the weekend. I hope next year I can partake.
John
I'll have my phone so I can give updates and upload some pics possibly. :)
I'm excited to hear stories from Fastnet Barnegat Bay Bash. Seriously, though, have fun and be safe.
I debated trying to come up, and my in-laws invited me to southern Jersey. However, without having trailer lights hooked up yet, I'm wary of travelling long distances and have to be here for a delivery Saturday. I'll be jealous and live vicariously.

Cool. I'll be watching the thread.
Check the facebook page as well, it'll be easier to upload pics there.

Will do, not a member of that group yet but have put in a request.
How are things now?
It's a little rough out there! Bob and I made it motoring to Forked River from Waretown, just a bit damp. :) just finished up breakfast with Marty and Larry. Going to head out and take another peak at the bay.
Hi Kevin,
Thanks for the update. Be careful but I imagine it will be more fun than the work I'm doing right now. Hi to Marty and Bob.
Thanks for the cool pics. Boats are looking lovely as always.
Made it back in, look for great future video of Koinonia and Figaro out on the bay! Lunch time now a the Captain's Inn Tiki Bar with a round of Rum Runners! :)
Bob and Kev- have a few Pusser's Painkillers for me and Becky!! We showed our Simmons Sea Skiff at the last Wings Wheels and Keels today at Topping, VA Airport. Very high winds and sputtering rain kept attendance down, but the wooden boats were in an airplane hangar, keeping us out of the weather. Miss all you folks at the Bash- if we keep our Compac, we might make it up there, but the sail from VA might take a month- could get there faster on the Kubota tractor!!
BBB-2015
Pegasus and I trailered down to Forked River to meet with Bob23. Bob helped me prep Pegasus for launch at Townsend's Marina. Bob drove to Latitudes to wait as I fought the stiff breeze with the Minnkota. Had to get up to "4" to make headway. Arrived at Latitudes and secured Pegasus for the night. Bob and I then went and feasted on some delicious burgers and eggplant... yummy! After shooting the breeze for a couple of hours (mostly about cars we had owned over the years), Bob left to return to Koinonia. I turned in for the night in the slip reserved for Pegasus.
Saturday morning, expected Bob to arrive at 7 with Kevin. Their voyage north to Forked River was directly into the NNE winds. They arrived at 10, a bit wet! We then learned that Larry and his family (wife and two very cute daughters, 9 & 5) had arrived at Townsend's with their Eclipse.
Then wind was still blowing pretty hard, so it was decided that Pegasus would sit this one out (phew!). Bob, Kevin and I headed out to the bay on Koinonia under iron wind with Larry close behind. Then we hit the bay... 3 foot waves were the norm, occasionally we hit a 4 footer. We were taking a lot of spray over the bow... and grinning ear to ear! We hit a particularly big one and got doused pretty well. Bob then set the jib so we could actually "sail" a bit. The adventure got even more exciting when I, as "rail meat" found myself standing straight up as Koinonia dipped her port rail! I think Bob found his adrenalin level just about right! All the while, we were watching the Eclipse buck the waves... really impressive. Soon, we had had enough and headed back to the marina. It was very cool watching the Eclipse surf back to Latitudes.
All's well that ends well. Larry and his family had to leave and Bob, Kevin and I had a hearty lunch (and drink) at the Captain's Inn Tiki Bar. Upon returning to Townsend's with Kevin aboard Pegasus, we prepped Pegasus for the trailer trip home (I pretty much had my fill of excitement). Bob and Kevin remained behind to continue the adventure tomorrow...

Great to meet up with Bob, Kevin and Marty, with some fun surfing. It was a 'blowout'

Following Koinonia lead we also attempted a partial Jib to declare 'sailing', but after seeing the angle of her mast when main was set (and what was probably Marty's Rail meat episode), I thought better to attempt to raise main on Figaro, and furled the Jib to go back to motoring. Unfortunately, photos were limited as everyone was holding on, but here is the entrance. (click for video if I did this correctly)

Of note for those curious about the Eclipse and the open transom: despite the seas and sitting near the motor, my feet indicated water over backside only 2 times, and even then it was barely a quarter to half inch washing out as quickly as it came in. Much more water came from the spray of the bow than ever came over the stern. More impressed with this boat - I really like her.
The wife and Kids indicated a great time with the splashing and surfing. I think an overnight of this would have been a bit much. Boat and family are home safe now. No worse for wear, and at least a little memory to share.
Unfortunately for the tow car, not so much. Some lady decided to use the extra space I was leaving between car ahead to take a left turn right in front of me. Trailer brakes helped, but 3K lbs of boat does not help in such occasions.

Bonus video of the day:

Great pics and videos! I especially love the video of Larry's daughter showing us how to tie a cleat hitch. It would be cool for my daughter Emily to meet Larry's daughters next year. Y'all are hardcore boaters to be out there and I hope it was a blast (and not just a wind blast). Very sorry to hear about the accident. One of the reasons I don't want to trailer a boat the five hours down to Jersey is drivers like that in multiple urban areas. It's bad enough with just a car. Hope the boat stayed on the trailer fine and that the police made sure the driver will pay her dues for that.
I think it was a great idea to take three guys for ballast out on K.
I don't know if there's interest but, if the planets aligned, maybe we might consider a July sailing get together on beautiful Lake Champlain here in VT. I'd be on either my O'Day 23 (if it is ready then) or Mirage 5.5. If the former, I'd have room to take a guest if needed. Champlain is a great sailing lake so hanging around on the water for a few days (before or after event) should be worthwhile. Also, lots to do in Burlington, VT where I was born and reared. In other words, for those who have the vacation time, it would be easy to make a week out of it. I didn't end up with a ComPac but this is more about people and sailing than it is about brands (seems to me).
Glad all are safe and sound and, hopefully, now dry. Determined bunch, y'all are.
Cheers,
Sean
Larry - Thanks for posting the pictures. We sure had a lot of fun out on the bay. Sharing breakfast with you and your wonderful family was a real pleasure. Looking forward to sailing with you guys in the future. Your girls are a real treat! Sorry about the accident. Glad no one was hurt. Hope you all can make BBB-2015.1 for lunch/dinner sometime this winter.

Had a great time thanks to all of you showing up to keep the Bash from being completely canceled.
I'm sure we'll be telling stories of BBB 2015 for years to come! Sorry to hear about your tow car Larry, glad everyone is okay.
Thanks to Bob for keeping this crazy event going and letting me take the tiller on Koinonia!
Been sorting through my camera and here is my first selection.

Shawn
Great pics and video guys! Thanks for sharing, I wish the weather was better so I could have joined.
Next time for sure
John
Shawn, thanks. Only you would notice that. It ain't pretty but it works great!
Thank you all for making this another "memorable" event! I promise not to wait till the last minute for BBB 2016! I'd like to plan for something in August, maybe around a full moon. Tice's is a wonderful place to be to see a moon rise.
Hi All:
From the chatter and the great photos and videos, it looks as though you folks had a great "Bash" in more ways than one. August next year sounds like a good time frame. As punishment for not attending, Lily and I went sailing here on the Chesapeake. We left Thursday evening and went down river for a bit and then anchored for the night. Friday we went down to the Sassafras River, about 14 miles from our slip, being pushed along by a good norther, using just the main. Turning into the Sassafras, we eventually tucked a reef into the main and let out some jib. With wind and tide against us, it took about five hours to make the five or so miles to Back Creek, where we found a sheltered spot for the night. The next morning, Saturday, we went down river with a following wind and out into the bay. After a short while, Aeolus caught sight of what we had in mind and said "Hey Bucko, watch this!!". To say the wind was a little overwhelming is an understatement. Very similar conditions to what you folks had up there in Barnegat. The sails came down and we ended up motoring the whole way back. Such is life.
It was good to see that all of you certainly enjoyed yourselves. Let's hope for calmer conditions next year.
Elk River
We missed you and Lily, Brad. Well, we missed Lily!!! Hahaha!!!! Larry is from your neck of the wood somewhere- he mentioned the Elk River. He a great guy with a wonderful family.
Still working on some more video but while you wait here are these. :)

Larry - yeah, that was the moment when I'm sure Bob's adrenalin hit the limit. Although he stayed calm and collected, Fleet Admiral that he is! My guess is that when the gust hit Koinonia broadside with the jib partially deployed, it then dipped the Port rail which I guess would make it a 45 degree angle. All I know is that I was standing straight up! Can't wait to do it again... someday!
Since we were on an easterly course, I think that when Koinonia dove into a trough, she was helped to heel windward with the added surface provided by the jib. Or maybe the jib kept her from heeling even further. Other opinions would be welcome since we lost the "black box". ;)

Great! Em and I just watched this.
Nicely done, Kevin! Very enjoyable. Now I really have to get it together and learn how to use my GoPro!

Well, Mr. Gardner, I wasn't the least bit frightened. I was scared to death!!!! The one nice thing about having a 23 is that she will take care of her crew. And about loosing that black box, I think the box jumped overboard to save itself. Smart black box!!!
Okay here is the last installment for the BBB 2015!

Or maybe the wind blew it overboard.

Nice...
I'll say it again. The picture and video coverage of this year's event was really great. Glad to see the water seems to have calmed a bit for that last run.
Kevin - Once again, nicely done. BTW - who's that old guy in the videos? I don't recognize him! Glad you guys had a nice ride back to Waretown. The water sure looks angry. Much thanks for an enjoyable time on Koinonia, Bob. And Kevin makes for great company as well. Hope to enjoy another sailing adventure with both of you soon.
Marty K.
Thanks for posting the pictures and videos! It was good to see that even in those conditions a good time was had by all. What a great adventure. I can't wait to hear all the "stories" presented at the MWG. It was really good to see the videos of Larry's Eclipse out there braving the waves with Koinonia. I don't dare tell the Madame Z because I know that how much she loves those conditions. Last year we sailed in 17-24 knots , but less the 4 ft waves, and we became comfortable heeling at 25 – 30 degrees. Being with you that day would have definitely raised the bar.
My hip is finally doing better and I plan on going out tomorrow for our 3rd sail for the season.
Thanks for being an inspiration.
See You All in January,
-Allen
Big thank you to Marty for the footage!
