I'm replacing a mast step. One of the four prior holes in the fiberglass looks worn and the screw doesn't bite.  Can I move the step back an inch or two and drill the four screws into a solid foundation.  My concern is not knowing if there is enough solid material for the  screws.
I thought maybe someone has done this.
Thanks for any feedback.

If not now..When?

I would drill the damaged hole out to a larger size. Then mix up some epoxy with chopped fiberglass cloth, and fill the hole. When it sets, re drill and you're all set.

I second the motion to repair the worn-out hole as recommended rather than move the mast step.  Moving the tabernacle would require readjusting stays, perhaps quite a bit, and possibly would change the balance of the sail plan somewhat.

I third the motion, not a good idea , what about drilling the hole through and back plate.Okawbow idea is the best in my opinion, which is worth just what you paid for it .........nies

Suggestion:
It is possible that water infiltration may have occurred over time if the previous screws if they were not sealed very well. Clear any loose or soft material from the area. Grind away any gelcoat that appears to have lifted away.  Dry area very well. Fill in area with epoxy. Reset the base using proper sizes stainless steel screws after drilling pilot holes and applying sealant to screws. Do not bolt through as this always appears to be the easy fix in this situation. The base plate is designed to breakaway or pull out by the screws to prevent the cabin deck from being torn away forbid if they were to be a rigging failure leading to a demasting.
