I was wondering what type of Free Flying Furling System some are using on the Com-Pac 19?  This one came with a Ronstan RF76 Furler and I am not familiar with it.  It is rated at 3740# Breaking Strength.   Thanks!   tj

TJ:

My 19/2 came with a CDI furler, age unknown, with what I believe to be a 135% jib.  It works very well for us at the Head of the Chesapeake.

Thanks,  If it works at the head of the Chesapeake it should do fine here out of Oriental on the Neuse and Pamlico Sound area.  If this one does not work I will look in to it.   tj

Thanks,  If this one does not work I will look in to the FF2.  It gets a little rough on occasion here on the Neuse and Pamlico Sound once in a while and I single hand and I'm getting too old to go up on the bow unless I absolutely have to!   tj

Folk,

My foredeck crew (wife) as finally agreed to roller furling jib for next year.

The commander in chief, same wife, does not want me to screw this up, so I have one shot at getting it correct.

Do I want a  135 or go larger?  Maybe get a seperate genniker later

What brand/model furler...

I will scout at Annopolis sailboat show in October, but I wanted to ask users first.

Thanks,
Brian

Mine  is home built from $25 of fittings. took about 2 hrs of labor. I'll make a parts list and photos if you wish.

Brian - I also recommend the CDI FF2 as a reliable, affordable furler. Mine has been trouble-free all the years I've owned it. It has very few moving parts.

In terms of sail size, that depends on your local wind conditions. Ideally you want to use the furler only to douse the sail, not to adjust size. If you sail in relatively healthy winds (10-15 kn) I'd go with the 135. If you are a lake sailor and sail in very light winds, you might want a 150.

Thanks Tim and Wes.  I am hoping to use the furler to reef the jib as well.  I am only separated from ocean by a thin barrier island and wind can be high.  My comfort level is around 25.

I will have installation at local boatyard.  I am not that handy and want boat to last.  Sad to say, I do not have much time off from work, and would rather focus on being on water.

Thanks for the input, I will look into the CDI.  Harken is my current choice and I know I will need to have new jib made.

We recently bought a 150 jib from Schurr sails in Pensacola Florida and ae pleased with it on our CDI2 . One consideration is to have as we did the jib cut so that it will not rub on the rail as the original one did. While we lost a little sail area we gained great visibility forward.     Doug

Mine came with a snapfurl cs500 of unknown age. It looks a little weathered but functioned just fine last season.
