The elusive 23D's, where are they

Well the number of 23D's seem to make them about as rare as the CP14! I have personally reached out to a couple fellow 23D owners so that we can share info and ideas but thought it might be useful to start a thread devoted to rounding up all of you in one convenient place. Maybe we can sticky it at some point as well.

So...if the throb of a diesel floats your boat weigh in and let's get us all together. Know that Luna is out there as is Empathy as is Bob, who i believe has the first pilot house version (owner mod).

Well...I guess the 23D is as rare as Hens teeth. But keep in mind nearly anything that works for a 23 will also work for the 23D. That may be the reason for not starting a separate thread. There are a lot of diesel sites out there to help if you are experiencing engine problems.

Hey Tom,

No engine problems just thought it would be nice to hook up with other 23D owners. There are specific items that are secondary to them, such as storage issues, handling differences, upgrades on tanks, fuel systems, props, charging capabilities, maintenance, etc.

Yup, hens teeth! Actually never seen hens teeth. :)

Ahoy 23D ears!
 We must be a rare breed indeed.  I'm in my 11th year with my little ship and can't imagine life without her.  Love that engine.  It broke one time and I bolted a Yamaha on it.... Didn't like that very much so I saved up and put a new cylinder head on and live happily ever after.

Thanks for checking in Bob. How many hours did your 10gm have when the problems crept up? What happened? Surprised to hear as those little thumpers usually go thousand of hours before needing work, other than routine stuff. Anything the rest of us should be aware of. No Mas is kinda low hours at 356 but 25 years old. I figured best to share info on these boats. Not many of us!

What have you found the fuel consumption rate is at 5kts? Gerry suggested quart an hour.

Love the work you have done on her. quite impressive. Keep checking in.

I've been lurking around the forum for several years as a visitor. Just joined as I recently purchased a 23d and hauled it to Lake Conroe near Houston, Texas. Have typical spring cleaning such as bottom paint, buff hull, replace rudder bushings etc. before launching. Decided to sail for a season before contemplating any upgrades and improvements.

Hi Zane.
  Although lurking here carries serious penalties, you seem like a nice guy and any 23 owner is a friend of mine. So, I'll forget about the penalties and just levy the usual $5,000.00 initiation fee. Payable to me, of course in small unmarked bills  in a brown paper bag. I have a relative in Houston who'll be stopping by in just a few minutes....you will be prepared, won't you? My cousin Vinnie doesn't like to be kept waiting!

Welcome Zane. I lurked as well before getting our 23d. What year is she and what engine does she have? Not many of us out there.

dont worry about Bob23 too much, try to mumble something about PBR and my guess is that cousin Vinnie will be called off!

Thanks for the warm welcome. Don't have PBR but have a selection of local Texas brews available which should suffice. The date built is 1996 with a Yanmar 1GM10. The picture will have to wait until launching.

The bronze rudder bushings ordered on Amazon showed up yesterday and stopped by Harbor Freight for the long drill bit to facilitate the replacement as recommended by several posters. Waiting on better weather and schedule to finish buffing the hull, replace the bushings, and slap on the registration numbers and name. Still deciding whether to strip the existing antifouling or just recoat this season.

Where did you get your 23? I been following the sales of the 23ds for awhile and knew of a 1996 that had been for sale in Wisconsin. Thought it went to fella in Ohio though. Anyway, the 23d may be the most elusive of the Compac line, congratulations and welcome aboard!

Zane, can you post the part number and link to Amazon.  Also, which length 1/2" drill bit are you going to use?  I am thinking of adding bushings to my girl.

The 23d was picked up in Savannah. It appears to have spent much of its life on fresh water lakes in the Carolinas.

Selected the following bushings on Amazon. Since they were inexpensive, doubled the order in case several are damaged during installation. Some posters have used similar sized bushings with a shoulder.

The drill bit is 25 inches long so you can drill out the existing bushings. Otherwise there is not sufficient clearance to line up a short bit with the offset caused by width of drill. Harbor Freight sells a set of 3 bits (one of which is 1/2 inch) for around $15. Granted these are wood bits but apparently work well on the existing bushings. I'll take a few photos of the process and post.

do the Bearings have shoulders to keep them in place?  I thought that the original bearings had shoulders to keep them in place.  Anyone know this and can anyone give me an answer on this?

Well Zane, my guess is that you now have the S/V Vera Jean! she was up for sale last summer and sold just recently out of Savannah. If so she appeared to be in great shape and I'm sure you will have much fun sailing her. I don't know if you have sailed a 23 before or possibly a 16 but they have developed an almost cult status! Wonderful sea motion for such a craft, well above average construction, and a head turner at most ramps and marinas. The company is wonderful to deal with and this forum is humbling in the knowledge base here. I clearly have a personal interest in all of the owners out there with the 23d as they are so rare. Its good to keep the ideas and knowledge on our boats out where the other 23d folks can see and share as well.

At least on my 23d, the bushings do not have shoulders to keep in place and appear to be pressed in place. The bolt assembly has a washer on top and bottom as well as one between the fixed and moveable portion of the rudder. Based on online research, some have indicated the shoulder bushing gives a greater surface to press in place by using a bolt / nut as the press.
