Great to meet up with Bob, Kevin and Marty, with some fun surfing.  It was a 'blowout'

Following Koinonia lead we also attempted a partial Jib to declare 'sailing', but after seeing the angle of her mast when main was set (and what was probably Marty's Rail meat episode), I thought better to attempt to raise main on Figaro, and furled the Jib to go back to motoring.  Unfortunately, photos were limited as everyone was holding on, but here is the entrance. (click for video if I did this correctly)

Of note for those curious about the Eclipse and the open transom: despite the seas and sitting near the motor, my feet indicated water over backside only 2 times, and even then it was barely a quarter to half inch washing out as quickly as it came in.  Much more water came from the spray of the bow than ever came over the stern.  More impressed with this boat - I really like her.

The wife and Kids indicated a great time with the splashing and surfing.   I think an overnight of this would have been a bit much.  Boat and family are home safe now.  No worse for wear, and at least a little memory to share.

Unfortunately for the tow car, not so much.  Some lady decided to use the extra space I was leaving between car ahead to take a left turn right in front of me.  Trailer brakes helped, but 3K lbs of boat does not help in such occasions.

Great pics and videos!  I especially love the video of Larry's daughter showing us how to tie a cleat hitch. It would be cool for my daughter Emily to meet Larry's daughters next year. Y'all are hardcore boaters to be out there and I hope it was a blast (and not just a wind blast). Very sorry to hear about the accident. One of the reasons I don't want to trailer a boat the five hours down to Jersey is drivers like that in multiple urban areas. It's bad enough with just a car. Hope the boat stayed on the trailer fine and that the police made sure the driver will pay her dues for that.

I think it was a great idea to take three guys for ballast out on K.

I don't know if there's interest but, if the planets aligned, maybe we might consider a July sailing get together on beautiful Lake Champlain here in VT. I'd be on either my O'Day 23 (if it is ready then) or Mirage 5.5. If the former, I'd have room to take a guest if needed. Champlain is a great sailing lake so hanging around on the water for a few days (before or after event) should be worthwhile. Also, lots to do in Burlington, VT where I was born and reared. In other words, for those who have the vacation time, it would be easy to make a week out of it. I didn't end up with a ComPac but this is more about people and sailing than it is about brands (seems to me).

Glad all are safe and sound and, hopefully, now dry. Determined bunch, y'all are.

Cheers,

Sean

Larry - Thanks for posting the pictures. We sure had a lot of fun out on the bay. Sharing breakfast with you and your wonderful family was a real pleasure. Looking forward to sailing with you guys in the future. Your girls are a real treat! Sorry about the accident. Glad no one was hurt. Hope you all can make BBB-2015.1 for lunch/dinner sometime this winter.

Had a great time thanks to all of you showing up to keep the Bash from being completely canceled.
I'm sure we'll be telling stories of BBB 2015 for years to come! Sorry to hear about your tow car Larry, glad everyone is okay.
Thanks to Bob for keeping this crazy event going and letting me take the tiller on Koinonia!

Been sorting through my camera and here is my first selection.

Thank you all for making this another "memorable" event! I promise not to wait till the last minute for BBB 2016! I'd like to plan for something in August, maybe around a full moon. Tice's is a wonderful place to be to see a moon rise.

Elk River

Hi All:

From the chatter and the great photos and videos, it looks as though you folks had a great "Bash" in more ways than one.  August next year sounds like a good time frame.  As punishment for not attending, Lily and I went sailing here on the Chesapeake.  We left Thursday evening and went down river for a bit and then anchored for the night.  Friday we went down to the Sassafras River, about 14 miles from our slip, being pushed along by a good norther, using just the main.  Turning into the Sassafras, we eventually tucked a reef into the main and let out some jib.  With wind and tide against us, it took about five hours to make the five or so miles to Back Creek, where we found a sheltered spot for the night.  The next morning, Saturday, we went down river with a following wind and out into the bay.  After a short while, Aeolus caught sight of what we had in mind and said "Hey Bucko, watch this!!".  To say the wind was a little overwhelming is an understatement.  Very similar conditions to what you folks had up there in Barnegat.  The sails came down and we ended up motoring the whole way back.  Such is life.

It was good to see that all of you certainly enjoyed yourselves.    Let's hope for calmer conditions next year.

We missed you and Lily, Brad. Well, we missed Lily!!! Hahaha!!!!  Larry is from your neck of the wood somewhere- he mentioned the Elk River. He a great guy with a wonderful family.

Larry - yeah, that was the moment when I'm sure Bob's adrenalin hit the limit. Although he stayed calm and collected, Fleet Admiral that he is! My guess is that when the gust hit Koinonia broadside with the jib partially deployed, it then dipped the Port rail which I guess would make it a 45 degree angle. All I know is that I was standing straight up! Can't wait to do it again... someday!

Since we were on an easterly course, I think that when Koinonia dove into a trough, she was helped to heel windward with the added surface provided by the jib. Or maybe the jib kept her from heeling even further. Other opinions would be welcome since we lost the "black box". ;)
