CP 25 Keys Fractional?

So, I'm catching up on my literature.  Just got around to January 2015 SAIL in the doctor's office this week.

Excellent article on chartering in Tahiti.  Good enough to make me research ... $14,500 just to fly my crew there.

But it got the old wheels turning in the noggin.

I can take the old ('00) CP 25 I've had kicking around since starting a sailing school (in 2000), and store it on a trailer in the middle Keys as cheaply as I store it here (New Orleans) in the water.  Due to life, life style, I haven't been able to use this boat in years (kids 5, 7, 9, 10, 12; and six other boats we can use in my household, plus I'm "in the business" so have an endless array of customer boats to dink about on).

If I embark on this path, first I'd pull the Westerbeke out.  (Anyone need a 12CTwo with <100 hours?)  And put electric in.  Throw lead acid batteries overboard, and put LiFePO4 in.  Now I'd have a boat 1,000 miles from home, but somewhere I'd like to sail and scuba.  And maybe I could go two or three times a year, maybe more, maybe less.

SO, as we all know about our boats, they really do need to be used.  Moving parts need to move, stationary parts need to stay stationary; and when we don't use them, the reverse of this occurs.

Anyone interested in partnerships or shares of an inboard propelled CP 25 in the middle Keys?  let me know!  Or if you need another diesel, let me know that too!

Why the electric inboard, especially since your diesel has low hours?  It will be expensive!  I got a Torqeedo 1003  outboard for my Horizon Day Cat...it cost about $1600.  An Elco inboard electric would have been a $16k option.

At our aeroport is an 11 year old MC-28 New Holland 72 inch front mount grass mower with a Japanese three cylinder diesel engine with 2370 hours on it as of yesterday. When I run it I'm turning the maximum rpms. Pedal to the metal.  Diesels love it when you make them work hard.

Runs perfect with air and oil filters and oil changes every 100 hours. And fuel filters every 300 hours.

Everything on that engine has never been touched. No water pump, no alternator, no nothing. No injector or fuel pump problems. Nothing has ever broke on the churn. Believe me ... I drive it hard.

Just saying diesels don't die easily. [Westerbeke's are fine also, though requiring more attention.]

You want problems? Electrics and water [salt or fresh] don't mix. Try electric propulsion on the water for 11 years.
And then there are the battery pacs to contend with.

If I was to consider moving my CP-19 with electrics ... I'd say I have rocks in my head.

Oh and then there is the cutless bearing through the hull business.

Just last week, the Coast Guard responded to a May-Day call in Lake Michigan saving four charter fishermen on a 31 foot powerboat going down in 91 foot of water stern first several miles off of Kewanee, Wisconsin. Even with two pumps on board the Coast Guard could not dewater the boat to keep it a float. Cause ...  prop shaft integrity.

[There is a reason why over 100 electric vehicle manufactures have gone out of business World Wide. Heavily subsided Tesla may just make it.]

There's another thread that's covering a lot of good information on diesel vs. electric, under the CP 23's.
Diesels run great, properly loaded, properly lubricated, they never quit.
This is a seldom used boat, that will still only see 3-4x a year.  That's not use of a diesel.  It's ABUSE.
Also, I can do the electric a bit cheaper (quite a bit) because I already sell and service them.  I also sell and service diesels.  And outboards.  And am an ABYC Marine Electrician, among other things.
The electric 100% torque 1RPM equation combined with no troubles with shelf-life and a nice set of Lithium batteries will give me the reliability I need in an abusive (lack of use) situation.  A diesel that sits that much will need attention EVERY single time.
And Skip, I know you love your history.  Check out the US Navy submarines; been electric a long long long long time.
