Just how many RI and Southern MA members are there?

Hi All!

First off I've been a member of this site since its inception but mostly lurking and not doing much posting.  We purchased our Com-Pac 16 #763 through the old email list even before it was part of yahoo.  Shes been sitting unused in indoor storage for the past ten years.  In that time I've gone to college, I'm on my fourth job, my third move, and got married.  My wife and I just bought our house in Portsmouth, RI on the northern tip of Aquidneck Island (Newport being the southern tip).  I am walking distance to the water and come hell or (hopefully) high (unfrozen) water the 'Wren' will be recommissioned and splashed this spring.

I was looking through the events and meetups forum and didn't see any events that took place before or were planned in this area.  But I have seen many posts of owners in RI and on Buzzards Bay.  I wanted to see just how many of us are in this area or within a quick trailering of here.  There are so many great bays and rivers for Com-Pacs not to mention free launch ramps in the area that a get together should fun and pretty easy.  I've got a pretty hectic schedule but I will have Sundays free all summer.

I figured I would start here in this forum to get a head count because it gets the most looks and if enough members feel like a get together this summer we will start something in the events forum.  I hope everyone is defrosting out there!  Best, Greg

Hi:
It is a 1987 27/2 model. Pretty much setup for cruising, been west to Long Island, east to Nantucket, north through the canal to Ptown and pretty much everywhere in between. Favorite places are, Quisett, Dutch Harbor, and Lake Tashmoo, least favorite place Taurpaiin Cove. Event most looked forward to on Narragansett the bay is the Gaspee Days weekend. It is about time for me to move up to bigger newer boat !!! Thinking a later model Catalina 30 or a 320.

I sail out of Wickford but no longer in a Compac. There is a 23 owner in Jamestown that is on the forum as well. In Wickford there is a Compac 16 and a Suncat but I don't know if they are on the forum.

Hi Bruce,

Haven't heard of the Gaspee Days weekend before, any tips for someone giving it a try the first time?

Thanks,

Shawn

Sounds like there's quite a few down here.  I haven't heard of Gaspee Days either.  What is it?

Hi:
Gaspee Days is a celebration of the burning of a British ship during the colonial days. It takes place in the Pawtuchett area of Providence, RI. It is in June and my sailing group goes to the Rhode Island Yacht Club that weekend for the festivities. It includes parades in town, a band, cookout, fireworks and a symbolic burning of the Gaspee. Check it out on google, great weekend

Hi Bruce,

I bought "Chouchou" a Sabre 28 last summer.

Very pretty boat. Now if she only had the "23" spoon bow.....

Hi Bob,

Thanks, not quite as salty looking as the 23 on the outside but down below she is at least as pretty, maybe more so and much much easier to move around in.

Not sure if it is the difference in the bow or the displacement (probably both) but Chouchou knifes through waves better than Serenity.

What I would really like from Serenity's bow is the bowsprit anchor roller and hawsepipe to the chain locker. The Sabre has no anchor roller at all (soon to be fixed) and the anchor and rode is stored in an anchor locker on the bow. It is more of a pain to deal with and limits anchor size and makes it harder to add a windlass. After I get the roller on I should be able to store the anchor on deck if I can pass the chain through the locker effectively.

Hi Shawn:
Nice ride, always liked Sabra's, they are a quality boat. Their pretty quick, and I'll bet it feels good to be able to move around below standing up LOL.

GrFa,

Wow the first post in how many years!?  LOL...welcome Captain!

If you are interested in organizing New England Messabout, there is a poll function here on the forum to help make it easier to vote for dates and/or location.   If you are interested let me know and I can help with the poll options (I can do more poll options behind the scenes).
