I've read most of the posts about sails for the cp 16. I have an '87 16II and want to buy new sails. If you were buying new sails for this boat in today's market, where would you buy and why?

Hey Marc:
National Sails, price and service......many threads on this topic.

I bought tanbark...just liked the color.

I was very pleased with the sails and their performance.  We had a CP-16 III, and I know that the stock measurements for C-16's are not all the same or standard.  I posted a picture of my old and new sails.  They were not even close.

How about

http://www.supersailmakers.com//com-pac-boats/

I have never used them, but Keith of the Sailboat Company in NC said he uses them for almost all Compac sails.  Their prices are on the link and seem very reasonable.  For example Compac sells a HC main for $2000, SS has it for $1386.  I don't know if they are the same setup or weight though.  Anyway, just another option.  I really like those tanbark sails on your 16 Charlie.  I wonder how a tanbark HC main would look on the 23 conversion I am considering.

I've bought three different sails for three different boats (including my CP 16/III) from Supersailmakers. Great sails and quick and good service, even including a free repair on one of those sails that was damaged by me.

I searched everywhere to replace my CP 16 sails.  National sails exceeded every expectation.  They even have all of the measurements.
After sailing one year with new sails; they still exceed my expectations.

Hey Chris, the tanbark sails would look great on any rig.  I would get them for our C-27 but for the difference in price.

Marc, again compare the measurements of your current sails to those that you order....there are more than one 'stock' measurement.

Bought a 5oz. main and 120% jib in 2013 from National for my 1997 CP 16. Very satisfied. Have a storm jib on order now.
First new sails I ever purchased, so can't give a good comparison to other companies. I know you can pay much more and their is something to be said for using a good local sailmaker who is familiar with your sailing conditions.

Charlie: do you recall the dimensions of your tanbark jib? I like the idea of extending the tack to make the foot match the boom height and improve visability forward. Looks like the leech is very close to the spreader.

Thanks, guys. Just the kind of information I was looking for. I had read many of the posts from the past, but some were more than two years old. Maybe your current info will help some others as well. It has surely helped me.
Love those tan barks, Charlie.  My color scheme would match well. I'll double check the specs and measure my others as well. Should get me there.
Again, thanks all.

Just purchased a 110 and main in Tanbark for my CP 19 from National.  Good prices...will report on performance when the next season rolls around.

Not sure if you have ever seen them...but "Egypian Cloth" sails are nice as well. Tan Bark are dark wine coloured where as the Egypian Cloth "look" are a biege. Easy on the eyes, look funky and typically less $$ upgrade than tan bark. Just throwing that out there...      A few of us during my M15 days had them.

Hey Carry-on:
This is probably more information than you want but here goes
Orignal Jib        Luff 14.08 ft..... Leech 12.75 ft......Foot 7.33 ft  (Area 46.51 sqft)
Tanbark Jib       Luff 12.16 ft..... Leech 11.83 ft .....Foot 6.5 ft    (Area 37.48 sqft)
I also bought a:
Tanbark Genoa  Luff 14.42 ft ....Leech 13.43 ft......Foot 9.59 ft    (Area 62.35 sqft)
Tanbark Main     Luff 15.25 ft....Leech16.81 ft........Foot7.5 ft      (Area  57.17 sqft)

It is interesting and a little disturbing to compare these measurements with the C-16III brochure.

Charlie, like Carry-on, I like the way that tanbark jib's tack is off the deck and lines up with the mainsail's foot.  But I have never seen those measurements you give for that jib anywhere on this site (see the CP 16 and CP 16 II/III specifications at the top of the 16 discussions).

I have the original CP 16/III manual, and all it says about the sail area is a figure of 120 sq ft for both sails.  I do know that boats with a sprit carried a jib of about 55 sq ft, and the original mainsail was reduced to 65 sq ft, shifting forward the total sail area to reduce weather helm I believe.

Anyway, Gerry Hutchins' measurements quoted at the bottom of the specifications would seem definitive, but I would echo the warning in the specifications about measuring one's exact sail dimensions when ordering, unless special sail sizes were wanted.
