Com-pac 1980

A project boat. It sat neglected with the cabin flooded .Water migrated into the keel area. I had skinned back both side plates of the keel to get it dried out before restoration. I restored the keel 110% of the integrity with the new build up. Forward bunks were saturated and soft. They were removed and replaced with epoxied marine grade plywood .Interior completely sanded and cleaned than primed and painted.80# of concrete had to be added and adhered to the bilge surface than sealed over with epoxy .All teak restored and coated with Sikkens. All fittings and bow rail removed and re-bedded. A Topping Lift and Reefing System added. Deck seam cleaned and caulked with 5200. Rivits replaced as needed. Gel coat lightly water sanded with 600 than rubbed out and waxed. Great results .New hubs and bearing for trailer .Powered with a Tohasu 3.5 4 stroke. New 2 section hatch board made and coated with Sikkens. Many other appointments added for safety and sailing convenience. Was able to get out at end of season for 3 hour sea trial. Performed flawless. All ready for next season.

She will be named "RU-ACH"  The Hebrew word for Wind, Force, Spirit , Gods Breath

Hey Cats-Paw:
Very nice job.  Your inside work must have been particularly trying.  It was all that I could to to get to the stern with a long reach in our C-16.  I can only imagine the difficulties that you faced.  However now you have a shipshape sailboat.  Sail it as much as you can.
Again nice work.

Beautiful
Where did you buy the sails?

VERY NICE ..interested in the how much time was spent doing this challenging restoration?

A couple of questions were thrown out. As to answer them. Sails were made by Kent Sails located on the shore of Lake St.Clair A connecting water in the Great Lake chain and a premier lake for sailors in the area.  http://www.kentsail.com/
The sails came with the purchase of the boat along with the original set. They were all but new with the bill of sail for them provided the previous owner.
I requested  Kent do a  couple of modifications. I had sail luff slugs added. I do not care for a luff rope. I like to have the sail loaded into the mast track and ready to hoist with out the pre- feed  task. I also had the sail maker add the Hull # and the Com-pac logo to the sails. Very pleased with the work done.

As for time involved on the project? I would say about 80 physical hours at the most.  That would not include the research and gathering of materials for the project last winter.  I would pace myself through the summer by working early in the morning from 6-10a.m. being that it would be much cooler and comfortable to do the task.

As for now "RU-ACH" is put away for winter.

Looks a very nice job.

Outstanding! Lots of great ideas and inspiration as I undertake a much simpler overhaul of my 16. Thanks for sharing the process and the results.

crazycarl

a very well done restoration.

what were your neighbors thinking when they saw you bring a shovel into the cabin?

It was not so much as the shovel going in as the debris that was hauled out.

RU-ACH was a very gratifying project when completed. She sails like a dream. Others cannot believe that she is a 35 year old craft. We had her going 5.3 knts with a 6 knt. wind on a beam reach. Looking forward to next season and the coming adventures as they may be.
