i have sailed my old 16 in some pretty windy conditions, have never reefed the main and have never felt out of control. a legacy like a 16 likes to heel quite a bit. 15 or 20 degrees is about the norm in good wind (say 15 plus). when im alone i keep the cabin buttoned up and even though the mainsheet is held by the cam cleat most of the time i have it lying on my lap or in hand just in case. my wife likes the windy stuff so when the boat attempts to round up i just hold her on course and push the envelope a bit and have found that the boat always remains on her feet. over time (on the water time) every sailor overcomes the apprehension of the boat heeling. they designed to. to us that is a big part of the fun and as your skill and confidence increases you will come to know that your little com-pac is one tough little bugger
