My merc 3.5 has forward and neutral the shaft is 15"....it is a little heavier than my honda 2 with 15"shaft...I keep weight away from the bow and stern.

oops! my last reply fired off early.... both the 3.5merck & the 2 honda  are lighter - the 4, 5, and 6's are about 20 to 30lbs more on the stern.[just saying]  The3.5 has been a good compromise[ for me]

Older posts but a topic I was concerned about when looking for my Legacy. I found Loki II by the Hudson River in NY. She had been commissioned in R.I. And was a salt water veteran.
Eight years old and well kept, She came with a 4hp Yamaha which the original owner equipped her with. A wise choice I've found out. Long shaft, forward reverse, internal and external fuel tanks and with Yamaha's engineering what's there not to like. With the standard motor mount the long shaft barely drags when beating on a port tack. Heeling that much I'm inclined to pinch or ease the main sheet sheet anyway. Tilting the engine is a piece of cake with a little rope attached to the rear handle and the release lever.all accomplished sitting next to the boom gallows. Thanks for the info Mike!  I may be in the market for a new outboard in the next few years, so I may just look at the Yamaha instead of the Tohatsu I have now (that's annoying me by friction screw not being able to keep going straight ahead).

The Yamaha's tensioner is excellent, never needs adjusting unless on the rare occasion where there is going to be a lot of motor steering you may want to loosen it for easier rotation. One surprise was the spark plug needs a 23mm wrench, no room for a socket.
