Speaking of Outboard Motors

Speaking of outboard motors . . .

What are you using?  (My old Tohatsu 2-stroke is 19 years old.  No one wants to service old 2-strokes these days.  I don't trust it anymore.)

About the only thing that I can find is a 6HP Tohatsu Sail Pro for around $1,500.  The Sail Pro has a high-thrust propeller.  I assume that gives "pushing power" at the expense of speed.

Do I need a long or x-long shaft for a 23/3?

I have been using a Suzuki 9.9 HP electric start four stroke.  It is being replaced with a Nissan 6 HP SailPro four stroke.  Unfortunately, the new motor is still in my shop, I haven't had the time or crew to go do the swap.  The swap is a one man job with the boat on the trailer, but requires two and some planning to do it in the water.

Yes, it is a displacement hull.  It will not plane for speed so you don't lose any speed.  You want power, low speed control and the ability to achieve hull speed with the least used HP.

Need? my 20" is in the water.  Want? yes, the 25" inch will be better in high waves and swell, won't come out of the water.  I believe the SailPro only comes with a 25, however, I'm sure you could configure a 20" similarly if you wanted, but would probably cost more than the SailPro package to do so.

Thanks.  It looks like the Sail Pro is about our only choice right now.  The Sail Pro comes in both a 20 & 25 inch.  I think maybe the 25 might be better for me since the prop on my present motor comes out of the water when there's chop.

The 20" Sailpro is a new option. Originally they were all 25". Get the 25" keeps the controls up higher and gives you the option of getting deeper in the water when there is chop. The sailpro replaced a Johnson 8hp 2 cylinder 2 stroke on my 23. The Tohatsu is a great engine!

So a year and 11 days later I have just ordered a Sail Pro 25.  However, I'll probably be in traction after taking the old Tohatsu off the boat.

good luck.. just don't make the same mistake that i did and let the fuel dock attendant put diesel in your tank.. the sailpro really did not like it..  but, with some tender loving care, it recovered and served me very well last season..   looking forward to firing it up soon..  i hope!  jt

Ouch!  I usually fill up the tank at a service station and bring the tank to the boat.  That drives the marina staff crazy.  Since they sell no ethanol fuel I'll let them do it this time.

I do the same thing or actually just fill up a three gallon fuel can and take it up to the boat to top off my 3.2 gal tank.  There is a non ethanol station on my way about a half mile from my house.  But the Marina staff loves me for it.:)  The few times I have forgotten to bring gas, someone has to leave the office/shop, walk about 500 yds. down to the fuel dock, unlock the pumps, and pump my two gallon or so sale, then reverse the process.  They get plenty of those 50-100 gallon sales, they don't think mine is worth the effort.

That's funny.  Three gallons is all that they will get out of me and that will last me for the summer.

So I know this has been discussed before but I'm in the same boat.  Is the SailPro 6 enough?  I'm leaning towards the 8 hp.  Sailing in Barnegat Bay and worried about going up against that 2' bay chop.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
mike

Hi Viggy:
I also sail in Barnegat Bay on a Compac 23. For auxiliary, I have an 8hp Nissan 2 cylinder 2 stroke and even in the afternoon chop that we regularly have, it's plenty of power. I usually don't go above half throttle so I'd assume the 6hp Sailpro is more than adequate. JT here also has a Sailpro, a 1984 23 and has sailed in BB so he may be of more help.
Hope we can meet up and sail together and stay tuned for more info on the Famous Barnegat Bay Bash 2014 which is found in the Events section here at the site.
   Welcome!

Hi Bob,
Thanks for the response.  I decided to go with the SailPro.  I'll keep folks posted after I run it against our typical afternoon sea-breeze.
Looking forward to meeting up at the Bash.  I'll keep a look out for it.
Boat's still on land...just purchased last week.  A little bit of work to do and then we'll be in good shape.
No name yet...kids are still figuring it out.

Mike:
Where is your home port and where will you be sailing out of? I keep my 23 in lower Barnegat Bay (Surf City on LBI) but regularly sail north into the Waretown area and over to Tice's Shoals.

Bob,
So we're practically neighbors....I'm keeping her in Tuckerton.  We have lots of friends down there and, as you know, the bay is practically empty down that way during the week (and most weekends).  Will be doing a lot of transient nights in Barnegat also.
We're sail # 292.
Probably see you out there.

Sail # 321 here. Although I keep the boat in Surf City, I live in Manahawkin. My son and brother also live in Tuckerton. Small world, eh?
I row out of Tuckerton once in a while. Lunch at the end of South Green St. Hope to see you out there!
