Seeking a 27!

Hi 27'ers - so, I have contracted 11-foot-itis. I love my 19 and will probably never give her up, but I want something larger for longer trips (plus my kids have turned into young adults, and my 6'-3" son doesn't fit inside the 19's cabin any more). It is time to embark on the search for a 27. If one of you are ready to turn over your beloved to someone who will take great care of her, or if you know of someone who is, please let me know by PM.

My ideal boat would be a 27/2, late '80s or early '90s, the 4-portlight version. The larger Westerbeke engine (18 hp) instead of the original 10 hp is desired but not a deal breaker. I intend to do a complete refurbishment, so I'm more concerned with a strong hull with no structural problems whan I am with the condition of teak, sails, and running rigging, which I can easily replace. My budget would be in the $15k to $25k range depending on age and condition.

Tim - I've been checking yachtworld.com regularly. There's one 27 listed in NC but its already got a contract pending. Several of the others seem unrealistically overpriced ($33k?). I posted here on CPYOA because I thought perhaps a fair number of 27s get sold privately rather than through broker listings.

Bob - that's a good price, but it's in St. Louis, I'm in NC, and hoping to find one closer to home if possible. Unless of course a friendly fellow CP'er volunteers to check it for me.

Keep those ideas coming.....

If I knew where West Alton actually was I would probably do it for you, then I should chase it down when it goes to NC so I can visit my brother who just became a State Trooper there.

That 27 in West Alton, just north of St louis could be a great buy for you.  With your budget you could even have a trailer made to haul it, provided you have a suitable tow vehicle.  Then its not to hard to go with a different mast step and poof you have a bigger trailerable cruiser.  If you would do something like that permits arent hard to get for most states but MO is a pita.  They want a ton of insurance, even for a private hauler  under 10ft wide.  Your only in MO for a few miles then its back in IL if your heading east.

I purchased my 27 in St. Louis and hired Koinonia to haul it down for me.  There are people there that can give the boat a good lookover for you.  I had written in my purchase agreement a sum of $ if the engine did not work.  From Greenville it was an 11 hr drive to check the boat after I was given an OK by a local.  At 10K or offer there is room to haul it plus some for work.

The question to ask you Wes would you consider a boat in New England? I am located just east of Providence, RI. I have an interest in a few Catalina's (30 to 32 range) in my area that are on the market. My asking price falls well within your budjet and we can discuss that further if you are interested. Along with my 27 comes a parts boat you could remove anything that you feel you may want. Then it will be cut up....sad but true. Please respond through the personal message option.

Thanks to all and especially to BobK for the tip; I have an agreement to buy the St. Louis boat. She is hull #74. Now I am searching pretty seriously for someone trustworthy in the area to check her out for me before I travel out there, and even more importantly for someone to transport her 950 miles to NC. She does not have a trailer and even if she did I have nowhere near enough tow vehicle to pull that kind of load. Help a brother out!

I would think Jason (MacGyver) would be your best bet as he is only about an hour from the boat.  With his background he could probably take a good look at her structural soundness.  With his marina contacts i assume he could put you in touch with a trucking company that could put her on a truck and bring her to you.  Even if you could find a trailer, I'm guessing it would be at least $4k for a used one and you still have to find a big enough truck to pull it.  What would that rig weigh?  10k lbs?  I wouldn't want to tackle that big a tow that far.  A job best left to the professionals IMHO. 

I grew up in St. Louis. Not the city, the burbs, no one lives in the city.   Alton is northwest of downtown where the Mississippi and Missouri rivers converge, making a fairly good sized lake.  The only "real" sailboat dealer in town is St. Louis Saiing Center which is about 30 minutes south of Alton, near STL airport.  Conveniently, they are a Compac Dealer and could also likely help you out.  They may even be familiar with that boat or its owner.  No affiliation, etc, .. just very familiar with the area.  Google them for their web page and contact info.

Good news: I have a signed contract to buy the St. Louis 27. More good news: my new best friend Jason (MacGyver) did an awesome job of inspecting her, and she looks to be an almost entirely unmodified 1988 boat with just a few problems other than the normal wear and tear of 25 years. She has been sitting in her slip unsailed for about 8 years; the owner was ill (he died last summer and his son is selling). I will post separately with some questions for you guys about the few issues Jason found.

Bad news: I am learning why people don't buy sailboats in St. Louis and ship them to NC. The marina is charging me a small fortune to demast, haul, and load her on the truck. I guess there's no reason not to rob the out-of-towners. The trucker who had committed to pick up the boat next week has just cancelled on me and I'm scrambling to replace him. All this is being done long distance, of course. I'll be glad when it's over.

I got a auto response on email I sent back
It has BUC book info in it and also estimates of time for the issues (rough estimates) as if I were bidding at marina which will give you a idea of costs to repair it.
Just wanted to make sure you get that email before you went and saw the boat to make a deal, etc.

Also, I think the issues Wes is having is just inherent to the marine environment! Lol
If it has marine in the name or is marine it always costs a lot more.........look at WestMarine...... ROFLMAO
