Greetings,  got a new main and 130jib from national sails last year and was pleased so I ordered an all Orange storm jib from them as well for use on lake Michigan. Just got it and it looks very robust. FYI,  dimensions are luff 8', leech 5' 9", foot 4' 9".  Almost done with winter projects, but it'll be a while before the ice is off the lakes....I'll just keep working on my winter Wisconsin tan in the meantime.

I am guessing these sail dimensions are for a MK 2/3 rig so that the sail has an LP of less than 100%. Otherwise the foot measurement would exceed the 4.5' distance from stem head to mast on the MK 1 rig and the sail would have an LP of greater than 100%. I know that is not exactly how LP is measured, but storm jibs almost always have an LP of less than 100% and have a shorter foot length than the stem head to mast distance of the boat (5.5' on the MK2/3 rig).

Jason, please confirm for us which rig your CP16 has.

Thanks.

Aloha,  she's a MKI, Compac 16, #1621, aka Lillyanna .  Just measured the new sail and the foot is 4 1/2', which makes it more like a 100% jib maybe.  It looks so much smaller than my 130, that I wonder if it would make a good heavy weather headsail as intended....or is it too big?  My intention was to raise this storm jib + the main with 1 reef, in heavy air.

Thanks for catching that dimension, and thanks as always for the feedback.

"that I wonder if it would make a good heavy weather headsail as intended....or is it too big?"

I guess that depends upon what you mean by heavy weather.

It would certainly be better than the 130 in higher winds. The 130 would be around 39 square feet, your storm jib is about 12.5 square feet.

I have a storm sail on my 23 that is about a 60% sail about 50 square feet.

Jason - I think that you are good to go with that new storm jib. Like Shawn mentioned 60% is a common LP for storm jibs, but since the leech length is very close to the foot length on your sail, that will bring the center effort down fairly low. The low center of effort is what you care about most as that will greatly reduce heel but still give drive through the waves. It seems to me that National Sails knows better than most of us what sail dimensions work so go for it and enjoy!
