The boat next to my CP23 at the marina the last two years has been a CP25. While they are close to each other in length, the hull, deck, and cabin trunk are significantly different. You can tell the emphasis when designing the 25 was interior space, with much higher freeboard, wider beam, and a higher trunk.

The side decks are almost nonexistent near the cockpit, which looks like it would make it very hard to go forward when they have their dodger up. I did realize that when I go forward I often walk on top of my cabin trunk anyways, so I'm not going to be too critical about that aspect. The higher freeboard and cabin trunk does give them standing headroom, which would be really nice, but in my mind the CP23 is a much better looking boat overall.

Just thought I would share some comparison photos for anything trying to decide between the two. I do have to say that the couple who own it spend almost every weekend on it, so for them I think the increased interior space was probably worth the slightly decreased. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad looking boat, but I'm a bit biased toward the 23. It's a heck of a lot better to look at than the Mac26m that is usually berthed on the other side of me!

NateD,

Sorry, but I must respectfully disagree. The Com-Pac 25, formerly the "wide body" Watkins 25, is a very nice cruising boat for her size. Given the choice between the two for cruising, I'd pick the CP25 every time! There's just a lot to like about the boat, from her lines, trunk cabin, and bowsprit, to the nicely appointed and very "liveable" interior below.

I base my opinion on having cruised extensively on 25', 32', and 35' sailboats.

Visually, I'd have to agree with Nate although when Capt. Nemo speaks, because of his vast experience- I generally listen!
Biased as I am, I like the looks of the 23. She seems to be very correctly proportioned. That being said, for Hutchins to design a trailerable 25 footer with standing headroom, is quite an accomplishment. To do all that, you've got to have some high freeboard. Now if the 25 just had that beautiful spoon bow that the 16 and 23 has, she'd be a winner.
I've heard that the 25's don't sail all that well but I've never personally sailed on one. Does anyone have any personal experience sailing on one? I'd love to have the luxury of standing headroom and still be able to store her on a trailer in my back yard in the winter. I simply can't fathom the thought of being a slave to a marina for winter storage...takes the fun out of sailing for me.
