Hello admins and members.  My name is Rob and I'm a new member. I'm from Central Ma and have been sailing on and off for about 25 years.  Just bought my first Compac, a 2000 picnic cat.  Looking forward to learning and hopefully contributing here.  Thanks for having me.

Welcome, These forums are great and I find that when the occasional outage occurs I cry myself to sleep till they come back on (outage not very often at all, just makes you realize how much you rely on them!)

Bring waders! Some times it gets deep around here!

I suggest you get a photobucket too, it is nice to post pictures when asking questions and such.
We just did and it is nice.

Congrats! and welcome!

Welcome Rob!
There are a list of stingent requirements to begin membership. To obtain that list, please send me $5000.00 in small unmarked bills...but wait! You and I have the same name! Half price for you! 2500 clams and your in.
We have, in the past, required that new members clean, wax and bottom paint all the administrators boats and it has worked out well...for the admins! Realizing that great travel was sometimes needed to reach the east coast for my boat, we will accept repayment for a professionally done job. Just pm me your credit card #...and...and...aw shucks, I can't go on!
Welcome to the site! I'm in a generous mood tonight, so you're in for free! Don't let it get around or everyone will want a refund!

I think Bob23's lost it.   You can send me your 2500 clams.  Make sure they're on dry ice though.

Does this mean I dont have to come this winter and do all these winterizations and such to complete my "right of passage into the forums"?
That would be a load off........ and my wife would appreciate me being around more if I didnt have too........

LOL

Be forewarned - if you ever plan on changing the name of your boat, you better plan on taking out a small personal loan, the "fees" here are steep!

Bob23

Well, what's worse: Steep fees or steep seas?
And Jason, we're gonna reserve all glass repairs for you. You can work off your membership fees by bartering fiberglass repairs.
Dontcha just love this site?
Rob: I really like the Picnic cat but have never sailed one. You must have sailed many different boats in the last 25 years...just curious, what drew you to the Picnic Cat?

Well...I guess aye ayes are in order to all the captains...and the rest since I'm officially the most junior lubber on the books. Quite a , ahem, welcome.

I've owned an O'day day sailer , a C & C 25 and a beneteau 21.  I've always liked the looks of Compacs...very salty.  I've also always wanted to sail a cat for single handed ease.  My wife likes to lounge while we sail and doesn't understand why I want to do all that work.  Always amazes me when people say that because the "work" is the sailing, which I love!

Anyway, Ive wanted a Suncat for years but never had the extra cash and also have a 19 foot sea swirl walk around power boat for coastal fishing so couldn't justify the cost of a Suncat.  When this Picnic cat showed up on Craig's List foe cheap money and local, I grabbed it.  On vacation this week and hope to sail it every day. No name on it yet.  Need to pick one after I've cleaned and waxed her.

Thanks for the welcome place to hang my foulies.

Welcome Rob, have fun with your Picnic Cat.  It should be evident to you by this thread that most of the members of this forum ain't quite right.  Thing is, most were completely sane when they joined.  It won't take long for you to fit right in.

Seriously, Rob:
Welcome and we look forward to your posts about your adventures. I also love the catboats; the Compacs, Marshalls and of course, the Herreshofs. A few years ago I was passed by a Horizon Cat while sailing my 23. We were on a run with the wind coming from the rear quarter. Try as I may, I could not catch that guy. Been looking for him ever since now that I have new sails.

Do new sails make that much difference when going down wind? Plus those cats have a huge sail compared to a sloop's main. And usually the further down wind the more the main shadows the jib. He might have had about twice the sail area catching wind.

Bet you could take him on any other point of sail though.

And those cats have swing keels, his may have been up, for less drag.

Bob just needs to add to his sail inventory.....

Between that and the main he would have about 400 square feet up, double the Horizon cat. ;)
