What is this thing? Part II

Hey guys,

This post is not related to my original post "What is this thing?". Was doing some "house cleaning" in the cabin and peeled back the carpet forward of the compression post and found an access hole. Wondering what it's for (access to the two horizontal bolts through the compression post? or what.) Did notice a little bit of H2O down there. Is that okay? The hull is sound, so I'm guessing rain. Was thinking of securing my wallet and and solid gold rolex there... in case of pirates on Barnegat Bay!

Yep, that's what the hole is for..to access the post bolts.

Could be condensation or a leak.  The bulkhead probably prevents draining,  or at least that's what I recall on the 16's.  The area should remain dry to prevent rot.

Unfortunately now that you've let the cat out of the bag about the watch, Bob's fees- which he'll calls "clams" to make it sound like you're giving food,  might be excessive even for NJ.  If you ask nice and pay on time,  he might give you a little strip of butyl tape to help with the leak. In fact, I'm pretty sure he would do the job for you if payment is made in a timely fashion..that's just the kind of guy he is :)

Yeah, I've been warned! A word of caution: I'd be real careful about sticking my mitt down that hole now. Never know what might be lurking. In a CP16 it's pretty dark in there. Maybe even wasps!!!

I'll be stuffing some rags down there to absorb the little bit of water that resides there. I'm guessing it got in via the vent when I was too slow hobbling out to Pegasus when the deluge arrived. I now keep an inverted bucket over the vent. Don't like to install the cap because it inhibits ventilation.

Hey Bob, try some nylon screening stuffed in your vents to keep those nasty stinging guys out. I read about doing that somewhere in the thousands of CPYOA pages. Parlay, Bob, parlay, Arrgh.

Yes, Marty:
That's a perfect place to store that Rolex. And when are you gonna ask me to go for a sail on your boat?
And just for the record, the "clams" that Salty alleges that I "extort" from newbees here are in fact, real clams. Littlenecks and if you throw in a good Rolex clam knife, I promise not to harrass you again. Well, not too often, anyway.
Good idea about the screen. I may do it although I do enjoy a good battle with my stinging adversaries. So far, I've won. I know that because I'm still here.

Bob, As you ought to know, the invitation is standing. Pegasus says she'd like someone on board who actually knows what they're doing! My schedule for the next 2 months is scary. The 1st Mate is getting a new kitchen (going from 100 sq.ft. to 200) demo and construction of which is supposed to start any second now! New kitchen cabinets and appliances have already arrived and are in storage. The good news is I don't get any guff about boat stuff. I used to rely on the visits to the hairdresser and nail salon - this is even better! Of course, I'll never be able to retire now! Got a wedding to attend Friday (don't know how that, and the preceding, will affect sail time) and another wedding in Ohio in July (I sure hope the smoke has cleared by then). My wife says, no, you can't take the boat with you! If you are planning a CPY get-together on the bay, I'll try to give it a high priority.

Been doing little projects on Pegasus. She now has electricity (that works), an anchor light, and teak grab rails for my aging body to grab. I fine tuned the mast crutches that work very well and are very simple (I do simple well). I'd like to put a bulkhead in forward of the compression post to create a rope locker and a wall to hang cool boat stuff on. Need to make a pattern. But, first have to complete retainers for the battery and other stuff up forward.

Hope to see ya on the bay soon!

P.S. If anybody finds that Rolex, no one will be more surprised than me!

Marty:
Glad you mentioned your July wedding. When is it? I'm starting to plan the BBB 2012 and your presence is mandatory...well, much desired anyway.
Let me know next time you're down in NJ...I'll try to make time to sail with you. Pegasus wants someone aboard who knows what they're doing? If you can't find someone, I can sure fake it!
If you meet my wife and leak one word about your wifes new kitchen, you're a dead man!

Bob,

I'll be in Dayton the weekend of the 21st of July. After that I should be free until the 29th of September - BIG VOLVO BASH in Rockleigh; the annual VCNA Open House. Lots of good stuff to eat. And lots of very cool Volvos - new and old. You even get to drive the new ones. Got your attention yet? Oh yeah, it's free!

What kitchen?
