Yes, I guess that's right even if it does sound a bit....  And I believe that to be so because of the focus you need in order to sail, sail well.  Not only to metamorphose into a single entity but , of course, to exercise your duty of care for all who come aboard with you.
Is this starting to sound like The Philosophy of Sailing 101?

Sailing makes me feel calm, smart and capable, humble, grateful, and a tiny part of IT ALL.
And I like to scare my powersporting friends at 5 miles an hour.

Sailing takes my mind off this unreal version of reality that I'm forced to live in. Probably the closest thing to time travel on this planet.

It looks like my "moving meditation" reference isn't the only "out of this world" philosophical response to the quesion about why we sail.

By the way Bob 23, I couldn't agree with you more.

Tim Gardner

Sailing lets me dream.

Because when I can't get a break in the weather or work to go sailing for three straight weeks I get really CRANKY!

Hrmmmmph!

Thanks Mike, for posting to this today. I had not seen this topic before. What wonderful replies have been posted!

I sail because it makes me feel so connected to nature. The tiller in my hand lets me feel the sea and the wind like nothing else. The sails soar above me like a bird of beauty. The quiet of ghosting along fills me with peace and joy in the knowledge that the world is a magnificent place when distilled down to it's essence. Sailing is a prayer of thanks to creation.

Sailing is being part of nature. Powerboating is like driving a car to WalMart.

We all must do our part to get Mike Greene out on the water as soon as possible, if not sooner. I'm sure Admiral B deserves better than a cranky captain. Hey- why don't you go for a row? That'll get some of that excess energy out of your system. Although, even though I try to row regulary, Admiral Linda maintains that I'm in a perpetual cranky mood! Hrmmmmmph!..What does she know?

Brenda has always deserved better than what she got.  We just celebrated our 31st anniversary which means her only bad trait is really poor taste in men.

Why? Here is one reason: the beauty of it.
