Painting the Cabin in CP 16/1

The advice on the varnish vs. urethane for cabin wood trim was great - went with semigloss urethane and it looks great.

I have painted the ceiling with Kilz 2 white water-based flat latex paint.  After scraping the flaking away, it did a great job and makes the cabin look bright.  I am think of using a flat latex on the inside of the hull (the walls) and an oil based on the bunks.  Think a medium to dark blue will do the trick.  Any  feedback on the types of paint based on experience (good or bad) is appreciated.

Thanks.

I haven't done too much painting on the inside of my 23 but I think that flat paint would be much harder to wipe down. I've painted the underside of my forward hatch and sliding hatch with a sky-blue gloss oil based paint and it's held up well and cleans up easily. I like light colors inside the boat...seems to make it feel bigger. This winter, I plan to paint the underside of the foredeck, not sure of the color yet. I may use Brightsides by Interlux because I have a lot of it lying around.
I think a latex paint would work fine; I personally don't like flat finishes...just my opinion.

I painted the underside of my sliding hatch with Valspar Duramax interior/exterior latex gloss white to match the gloss white beaded headliner panel Compac uses.  It was originally that drab gray that Compac uses in all the hidden areas. It has held up very well, but only did it a year ago.

I agree with Bob on the flat paint, more difficult to clean I would think.  Also exterior paints or interior paints for bath rooms or humid areas have mildew inhibitors which would be good.

Thanks Bob & Brackish.  Good points both - I think I will semi-gloss latex will do the trick.

Fed,  (you didn't give a name)

By urethane, I hope you meant Bristol and not hardware store polyurethane that yellows in the sun.

Anyway, I've read others claims that latex works fine for interiors but if you wanted to get really carried away you could use a marine topside paint (major overkill IMHO), but not a urethane based paint inside the cabin unless you bring your own breathing air as the vapors could kill you.  If you use latex get a mildew additive as if you were painting a bathroom and consider a gloss as it is less suseptible to mildew or use an exterior paint (but still use the mildew additive).  Mildew can be a real problem in boats on a mooring.  If you trailer out all the time, then any latex would be fine as long as rain doesn't leak in.
