I currently have a 2.5 hp Yamaha short shaft which does a fine job.  However, I have a friend who has a 2 hp Honda with a long shaft, said I could use it. Any thoughts.

I know all the intangibles, I'm more concerned w/ just pushing power.

I don't like the clutch on the Honda but I LOVE Honda's reliability.
The Honda is air cooled which I like but I "hear" it is noisier
is the 1/2 hp really that much?
if my short shaft is in the water does it make a difference if it is lower in the water? Or is the longshaft only for boats with a higher freeboard?

Thoughts?

Billy, bigger is always better.........Phil

A 2hp or 2.5hp seems a little under powered on a CP19. But then again if you are not fighting tides, wind and a lot of current, use what works.

nies, bigger as in more horsepower or bigger as in longer shaft?

lostsailor,
yes it is underpowered. A 5 hp longshaft would be ideal. the 2.5 yamaha came w/ the boat. it works fine except in waves and when I go forward (the prop comes out of the water). I've had it in some pretty decent currents and tides and it seems to work. If there is alot of wind the motor is off so I wouldn't know how it works in wind. However, this is my 1st sailboat and I don't know otherwise. I would like to upgrade but if it ain't broke.......

any 16s out there with a 5 hp? I'll trade ya and give you a few bucks to offset the difference.

If it was a tohatsu/nissan 4stroke you can swap out the carb on the 4 for the 5 or 6hp.
I've bought a 4hp carb for my 5, hope to improve fuel consumption a little, don't need the power.

Just found a guy on Craigslist with a 6hp Merc 2 stroke extra long shaft that wants to trade! I'm going to meet him tonight and I'll post an update.

In the meantime.......
check out these beauties, too bad they are all short shafts.
