Hello All
Just thought I would introduce myself as I just Joined the forum.

I currently sail a Tanzer 22 on a large lake in Quebec. As I head toward retirement I am contemplating retiring the Tanzer in favour of either a Sun Cat or Legacy. I can see pros and cons for both and, as the switch is a year or two down the road this seemed like a good place to start sorting out which would be the best fit.

Welcome Tim:
As a 23 owner, I can offer no help deciding between the Suncat and Legacy. Why don't you buy one of each? A man can't own just one boat, you know!
Best, Bob23

Tim and Bruce:
Be forewarned...there are some seedy, questionable characters lurking around here at the site. You preceed further at your own risk. Hanging around here too much has caused others to do things such as spending the mortgage money on a new suit of sails, waxing the topsides of thier Compacs while they should be working, eating dinner on board when they should be home. It all starts when you see nothing wrong with breaking down your outboard on the dining room table one cold winters night. During dinner. Or spending countless hours sanding and varnishing teak in the living room and seeing nothing wrong with that at all. I think you get the idea.
I tell you: Turn back while you still have a chance! I was once like you; young and innocent- thinking this was just "another nice site". Now look at me: just a shadow of my former self. I tell you: It's too late for me but save yourselves!!! Arg, arg, arg.

Welcome, Newbies, to the forum.

Please disregard all posts by Bob23.  Bob23 has been slowly sinking into the advanced state of dementia known as Bilge Water Brain Syndrome (AKA BWBS "Bob23's Whining BS").  He can't post pictures (or just refuses to, due to his illness), can't stop playing with his dinghy, and has bouts of mania wherein he refers to himself in the third person, all the while calling himself "Koinonia".

WE all feel so sorry for Bob23, that we regularly give him Good Karma to help his BWBS along the path to complete burnout.

ROTFLOL.  Welcome guys.  Let it be known, however, that Bob23 does make some outstanding contributions to the board particularly in his writings.  Good idea for you to go back to old threads on a cold winters day and read them.  Also be advised that despite claims, it would be better to consider them fiction to be on the safe side.:)

good stuff guys,

Tim,
I love the sloops. They are faster and I just prefer working more sails (I wish Com-Pac made cutters, ketches, and yawls). But then again I am still young. There was a thread a little while back were someone asked this same question (b/w a Horizon and a Sunday) and I said go w/ the Eclipse.

His response was he was familiar w/ the sloops but in his wisdom (old age) preferred the "less is more" and wanted a Cat (one sail). So if you are looking for a "retirement" boat I would recommend the cat boats. Especially if you live up north (they belong up there).

On the serious side:
If I were to choose, I'd go with the Suncat but that is purely a personal preference maybe because I sail in the Barnegat Bay in NJ where catboats are plentiful. Rumor has it the the catboats had thier beginnings here in the Northeast. I haven't checked that out so it could just be more ramblings of yet another old codger. I think that the Hutchins boys captured the catboat elegance in all 3 of thiers.. The Horizon cat is one beautiful boat. Theres a green one around that blew the doors off me a few years ago in an inpromptu race.

On the delirious side:
I told you there were questionable characters about and now you've seen it for yourself. It is true that I haven't learned how to post photos here but if I do, look out! The world as we know it will no longer be safe!
BWBS aint' so bad...taken with a wee bit of Goslings Blackseal and lime jiuce.

Back to the serious side:
Let us know how you choose and welcome! I'm sure you'll fit right in. Just decide if you really want to: If you have any reputation to protect, you might want to reconsider!

Hi Tim,

I used to work at a Com-Pac dealership and have sailed both. Both are fun little boats, but the Sun Cat is quicker and easier to rig. A critical question will be: how tall are you? The Sun Cat is much friendlier to the taller folks.

This video shows me sailing a Legacy with the new owner. I'm the tall, skinny guy, and I didn't fit as well in the cockpit or cabin as the owner.

This one shows me sailing what is now my boat, but at the time it was owned by a guy who is hiding in the cabin during the video.

I'm 6' and if you are my height or close to it, you'll find the Sun Cat more comfortable, especially in the cabin.
