Hello,

I've recently become the proud owner of a 1988 C16/3. I found this forum a few days ago and have already learned a lot. I live in northwest Washington near Anacortes so I have a lot of great sailing to chose from. I'm hoping to take the boat out for the first time in a week or two.

I plan on towing with a 2004 Toyota Tacoma 2WD. Anyone else out there using a similar vehicle to tow your C16? As I have no experience towing anything I'm much more concerned with that than I am with actually operating the boat.

I'm looking forward to learning from you all. Thanks for creating such a great resource.

Thanks.

Welcome to the Forum Tim, you will find lots of 16 owners here. Do you sail out in the San Juans?

That is the eventual goal since I'm so close. But I only have a little previous sailing experience so I'll probably spend a lot of time learning at first.

you can pull a 16 with a go-cart. You shouldn't have any problems. However, if it is a shallow ramp and it's wet you might slip a bit. What ever you do...DON"T just spin your tires. That will get you know where fast. Put in low and pull the boat out as slow as possible. As soon as one tire starts to slip, back up (but not too far) and try again. If it keeps slipping, get a few people in the back of the truck. Does your trailer have a tongue extension? I've heard of a few people backing down the ramp just before the water, chalking the tires on the trailer and disconnecting. Then they tie a rope from the hitch to the trailer and back it down the rest of the way. I would only try that as a last resort. Maybe bring a rake to get any grass or seaweed off the ramp. You should be fine. Remember, don't spin your tires!!!!!!
Welcome aboard!
And BTW, I pull my 16 and my 19 with a Tacoma 2WD.

Hi Tim,

You shouldn't have any trouble towing with your Tacoma. If you haven't towed before you might want to find a nice big parking lot and practice backing the trailer a bit.  You know, just to get the feel of it before you get to the ramp and have to back up before an audience.

It's nice to see another member in the Northwest, we need more! I'm in Southern Oregon near Medford. I envy your sailing options up there. Hoping I can bring my boat to the Puget Sound next year and experience a bit of it. Maybe you could post here about some of your favorite places to sail. Anyway welcome to here. There's any number of people willing to help with advice. I think you'll like it.

Welcome, you have found a great group of sailors here.  They have been very helpful to the Mrs. and I.  Fairwinds...

Welcome Tim, It's great to see all the new COM-PAC owners finding the site!  The 16 is a great little boat,  I tow my 16 with a JEEP and have no problems. I agree with Mel with praticing your backing, and give your self twice the stopping distance when towing, it's harder to stop the boat than pull it!  HAPPY SAILING  BILL

Tim and Billy,

Which engine do you have in your Tacoma....the inline 4cyl or the v6cyl?

I am looking at the I4.  3500 lbs towing but 2WD.  has me a little concerned.

Thanks,
saluki

I have the I4, 2WD. Love it, no problems. Used to slip a little when pulling my 19 back up the ramp, but I went to the tire store and bought a good set of gnarly mud+snow tires. Amazing the difference they made.

Welcome Tim:
Ditto on the practice backing up advice!
Enjoy sailing your C16.

Well, since this post is dated back to 2010, I suspect Tim has the trailering thing down pat :)

+1 on good tires.  When I had a 4runner AWD with Bridgestone Revo A/T tires, there was little that would stop it.  tall snow drifts, slipper ramps, mudholes off the beaton dirt path where no match for it. It conquered as opposed to managed to get by.

Well, since this thread has been resurrected, I tow my 16 with my 1990 Volvo Wagon that Bob23 wants to kidnap. No problem at all towing or launching/retrieving. Longest trip so far: 200 miles +. I understand that when the CP16 was first built, it was dragged all over the country to various boat dealers... with a Pinto!
