The State of the CPYOA:

I've been reading that there are quite a few folks from the Yahoo Com-Pac message board that are trying to join our CPYOA site but are not able to post messages due to the fact the CaptK (our absentee moderator?) has made his personal blessing a requirement to join our ranks. So there are a line of Com-Pac owners wanting to participate here but have been waiting months for "approval".

Does anyone know CaptK? or where he can be found?

If he's no longer interested in this site he should either appoint a moderator to handle the day to day comings and goings, or hand over the site all together to someone willing to maintain it.

There's always the possibility of starting a new forum site, but I don't think that's in the best interest of Com-Pac community as a whole as there are many years of invaluable posts here. It would be a shame to lose it or walk away from it.

Does anyone have any input or suggestions? In my opinion, leaving things as they are is not the best option here. We seem to be down to just a few of us "regulars" that are posting here and any new members are being alienated as they are waiting for an approval from CaptK that does not seem to be coming.

Last I heard, Capt K was in Jail for the MDA. A good cause, but that may be keeping him busy. Perhaps we should ask him when he gets out  what he thinks.

kchunk

MDA? OK, I've searched for the MDA acronym and found:

  • Muscular Dystrophy Association
  • Missile Defense Agency
  • Mail Delivery Agent
  • Michigan Dental Association

All good causes but nothing I'd go to jail for.

Are you serious or just joking?

I have installed and administered forums like this in the past.  if you leave them open for registration to anyone, without moderation, there are evil web bots out there that will sign up accounts and inundate it with hundreds if not thousands of spam posts.  Viagra spam, porn spam rogaine span....  You name it, and the forum becomes useless.  This is what happened to the old forum.

CaptK did us all a huge favor by tediously cleaning all of those messages out of the old database and setting up a new board for us.  Big time props and thanks to CaptK for that.  I remember it took months for him to complete.

Anyway, it is a hard job keep one of these things running alone, and it's very time consuming.  Perhaps he could deem a few trusted volunteers to become moderators and share the load.  It would be nice to see some new blood in here.

I like the current site.  It's easy to use and most importantly easy to search for information and previous posts.  It would probably be a lot of work to get anything better.  Once we figure out where CaptK is and get someone else administration rights to be able to approve new users, everything should be good...

Here's to Capt K, wherever he may be: Hip Hip Hooray! Hip Hip Hooray! Hip Hip Hooray!
Ya done good, Capt and we are (or should be) indebted to you. While the site was down last winter, we was in the doldrums, we was. But now, we is sailing free!!!
Grog to ya!
Bob23...I wouldn't know the first thing about running a website.

According to the SailFar site, he was locked up (temporarily I think) for the muscular dystrophy association. He is fund raising for them. I say give him a few days to read these posts. He would probably appreciate the help.

I think Capt K has done a good job managing the site but since he also hosts the Sail Far site he has become over extended.

Hopefully he will take the more techy of us up on the offers to help out.  Matt

Newt, have you been on SailFar in the last week or so.  Last time I tried to log on I got a pop up stating site had been hacked.  All attempts since then have resulted with a notice of illegal use. One of the SailFar topic areas had seemed to be taken over by some doper bloggers a while back.

After attempted hacking of this site last year and now what appears to have happend at SailFar I can appreciate The Captains seemingly reluctance to let any one on site for a while.

I for one am willing to wait on the Good Captains return and in the mean while hope for the best.

Summertimes gone but the Sun is on the waters, the Winds are fair and Sailings great.  What more

I rather walk the plank first.

skip, i know you will be there, because when the going gets tough, the tough get going. As  my "other" life experience taught me, never look back when charging up the hill, there may not be anyone following you. But i am sure cp owners are different, i mean that in a kind way....lol......nies

For some reason, you can't go to sailfar.net, but the forums are still running.  Use this link:
