Well said, Rick.  Mike, you can use some fairly light line for the job.  Quarter inch is probably OK.  On my sail there is some soft three strand line tied to the grommet.  Use a "double slipped reef knot" to secure it.  You already know how to tie this knot.  You tie your shoes with it every day.
