My name is Dan Hunt. Cell-704-201-7167 / dan@hydrocarolinas.com. Live in North Charlotte. I am a novice also. Bought a CP-16 last August. Just in time for all of the ramps on Lake Norman to be closed. Just got he out of the shop. Had her detailed and bottom painted. Getting her ready to sail next week. There is another CP-16 at a Landscapers yard about 4 miles north of me. Give me a call sometime.

Jackaro and Dan:

I live in Morganton.  I used to sail often on Lake Norman.  Have family there.  Now, Lake James is my home water for a variety of reasons.

Should you want any pointers on set up, sail handling, or just conversation let me know.  Email through my profile is fine.  Happy to crew.  ;)

Good luck to each of you.

I live in Forest City, NC, about an hour west of Charlotte, 30 minutes east of Lake James.  I usually sail my Compac 16 on Lake James (Linville access area)  but have been thinking about trying either Lake Norman or Lake Wylie.

Where would you recommend me putting in?

Maybe we could get together and sail sometime, either on Lake James or in Charlotte

Robin.

Hi Robin:

Glad to hear you are so close.  Yes, the Linville access is a good place as is the ramp on the south end of the lake, close to the state park.  There's another on the north end on the McDowell Co. side, but I have not investigated it, yet.

As for Lake Norman, my Mom lives in the Mooresville area, so I use All Seasons Marina off of Langtree Rd.  Take I-77 to ext 33.  At the first light on the west side of the interstate turn south (left).  Take that service road all the way to Langtree.  Turn right onto Langtree and go about a mile.  You'll see the Marina on the left.  Last I put in, it cost me $5, but it's a nice deep, short ramp.  There are others further south, just depends which part of the lake you want to access.

Hope this helps.  :)

Paul

PS:  I have heard of Moss Lake, close to Shelby.  Have you tried it?  Have you tried Lake Lure?  Heard it costs a bundle to put in there!!

Paul,

Thanks for the info. I have not tried the other ramps on Lake James. Is there a large open area of water to sail on near them?  I also like the lack of boat traffic on the Linville side.

As for Lake Norman, I was looking at the southernmost end, near the big power plant. That is the closest section to my home (about an hour away)

I have heard of Moss Lake but have not seen it so have no info on it.   I will check it out and let you know.

As for Lake Lure, I checked last year and they want $500 for an annual permit for motorized boats, including sail boats.  Best I can tell, it is not very suitable for sailing anyway. It is shaped like a cross, with 4 narrow arms with no really open areas of water to sail in.  It is also surrounded by high ridges so the wind is probably pretty squirrelly.  We did pay $10 each to get a permit for our sea kayaks and paddled around some.

I used to live in the Boone/Blowing Rock area. Seems they are trying to make Lake Lure another Blowing Rock, an upscale tourist destination that caters to the wealthy.  They have already passed a noise ordinance in an effort to discourage the motorcycle community which has had a number of rallies there over the years.

Anyway, thanks again and be well.

Robin:

Yes.  The south western section of Lake Norman is fairly broad.  I have put in just west of the dam at a large public ramp.  Lake is near full pond, so this should be pretty easy for you.  You could probably google map the area and get a visual of this ramp.

The ramp on the south side of Lake James gives access to the larger part of that lake.  From the ramp sail east under the bridge to get to the wider areas.  The bridge is more than 20 feet over the water, so you should be able to get under it.  Mountain lake sailing truly hones the sailing skills.  You really need to be able to read the water.

Yes, Lake Lure caters to the wealthy.  It's the "Realize Rutherford" folks.  Oh well.  Let me know if you check out Moss Lake.

Fair winds and following seas.

Robin:

I like to put in at the Duke Power Ramp off of Unity Church Road off of Hwy 16, Denver NC. It is on the main channel of the river. Had plenty of water last year during the drought. Let me know when you go and I may be able to put in also.

Dan,

Thanks for the info. Lets' make plans to get together there sometime.  Wasn't there once a sailing school near there?

My email is rc1580@gmail.com

Paul,

I haven't been to Moss Lake yet but I found out they charge $10 per day or $50 per year per boat (applies to all boats, canoes , sailboats, motor boats, etc).

Here is a link to a site with more info.

Robin:
Unity Church Rd. access is off of Hwy 16 a couple miles north of the McGuire Plant. No charge, Port A Potty facilities, and is on main channel of the river.  Blyth Landing is just East of the Plant off Hwy 73.  Blyth Landing is a Mecklenburg Co. Ramp. There are facilities and a charge. Puts you into a cove. "What A Dame" is going into the lake for the first sail of the year this Thursday and Friday. Wish me luck.
