I don't know how to rig my CP 16

I'm a pizzaman/telemarketer who just got a free sailboat. I was on a delivery one day and saw it in a guys back yard. I asked him about it and he told me he was giving it away. Reasons for doing so: Giant crack where the wind blew it over on the trailer. Rotten bunk on busted side. No halyards. The boat is otherwise complete and to my joyous surprise She came with two sets of sails, both of which are in pretty good shape. It came with a Johnson 3.0 (all seized up) and all sorts of goodies like preservers and an oar and a sail cover bow lights. A ton of stuff and I count myself lucky. However, I have no clue as to what I'm doing as far as setting all this stuff up. It's a '77 Compac 16(with a freshly fixed up hole) And I just need to know what type of line to buy and where everything goes. Instructions, weblinks, anything would help me out. I think I'll name her "Freedumb" Thanks, Aaron

Freedumb:

Pizzaman/telemarketer;  what an interesting combination. :)

Anyway, congratulations on the new-to-you boat and welcome to the forum.  There's a ton of info here, as you can see.  The short list:

If you're new to sailing, get "The complete Sailor" as a primer on sail instruction.  Another worthy candidate is "The Trailer Sailor" by Burgess.  Also consider any works by Don Casey.  You might start by googling his name.

You mention a big crack and a newly repaired hole.  Are these the same?  If not, then I would hesitate putting her in the water just yet.  Rotten bunks can only mean water is getting into the interior.  Find the leak and fix it.  Then fix the bunks.  There are several here who have done the work successfully.  Consider viewing the West System Epoxy SITE.  Their literature is relatively inexpensive and loaded with information.

There are several here who have details on halyards and sheets dimensions.  Others may feel free to chime in here.

Expect a steep learning curve (in a good way).  ;)

Good luck.

Welcome aboard Aaron.  You have stumbled into a great little boat.  Congratulations.

I'm sure you will find much of the info you need on this forum.  I also recommend you purchase the CP 16 handbook from Hutchins (the manufacturer).  It can be bought at:  http://www.com-pacyachts.com/itemsfororderform.php

Happy sailing.
