Weight atop the mast

I had read in sailing that at a 25 foot high mast above the water, a pound of weight at the top of the mast requires 12 pounds of weight in the keel.
Not that that's so worrisome, just interesting to me. So limit what is up there I guess.

Additionally my friend Bob who just launched his Seaward 26 and will be my dockmate, tells me that this boat in particular is very tippy. This model has the short 25 inch draft with fixed keel and horizontal fins, like a Hunter.

This set-up had a short run, made by those who purchased Hake boats from Hake and reduced the quality in order to save a buck to a point where Mr. Hake bought the company back from those investors to up the quality.

The current keel design now electrically cranks up and down, draft is about 6" to about 5 foot. But the darn keel trunk goes from the cabin sole up to the cabin overhead...it is strange, me thinks.

Anyway, not surprising the similarity in hulls since Hake use to work for Hutchins.  The mast is hugely tall and bow very pointy so not much floatability here to counter the lean during a hearty tac.  Would this cause a heart attack? skip.

I find it interesting that the original poster lblindsley has only posted that one single post, and the rest of us glombed onto it and ran!

Skip, about that Seaward being tippy: I have been reading every sailing book I can and have read quite a bit about hull design now.... I'm sure you know that some designers want their hulls to heel over and then stabilize at an angle, perhaps that's the intent of the Seaward 26.

I'm hoping to pull up by you yet this year, I'd like to sail to Washington Island and see if they have any of that Washington Island Wheat Beer on sale... I sure drink my fair share of it down here!!!

Hey don't be a stranger. Pull along side anytime. Snug Harbor by the newer high way bridge. Not the down town bridge nor the new bridge under construction.  You'll love Washington Island. Nothing there...ha. 'Cept beer. Nothing wrong with that.

What is a " poster lblindsley"?

It might be tippy by design you are right. Or it might be tippy 'cause of a cost cutting measure. Short finned keel and all. This particular boat is manufactured after Hake sold the company and before Hake bought it back from those who were ruining the boat.

Interesting a fellow in the Hook Race last week had trailered a 35 foot Seaward from Golden, Colorado to Racine, Wisconsin for the race...ending in Sturgeon Bay. I guess he did not do too well. He was just a-cussing and throwing things...muttering how nothing had gone right. Poor wife. crazy? skip.

Well, funny thing about lblindsley.... See I was reading another post that lblindsley wrote and then clicked on the forward button at the bottom of the page and ended up in this thread.... So being a terrible dancer, I just tiptoed around the whole issue and replied to the Seaward at the same time.

Can people drive on Washington Island? I can't remember... I was standing at the ferry dock and told myself it was too much money for the trip over for the short time I had available.

Then once I flew up there in a little plane, I think I was in a Piper Warrior, with the intent of landing on the island, but we didn't do that either.... We ended up playing in some low lying clouds and then going over to Wausau. ( I haven't flown for years.....)

This weekend is not working out for sailing, and next weekend we leave on a Harley trip, so maybe the weekend after that....  I'm familiar with Snug Harbor... What is the name of that restaurant just north of the best Western that has the excellent prime rib? I have to go there. Any idea where we can get a weekend slip? Maybe at Skipper Bud's if they still have the place by the old bridge?

Lost Lake. The Neighborhood Pub and Grill just across the street from the Best Western or Nightingales a wee bit further up Egg Harbor Road across from Wally World.
Yes one can drive around Washington Island. But why? Not much to see.

Hi Skip,

I know the Neighborhood Pub quite well, I would stay at the Best Western from time to time and walk there for a refreshing beverage. The walk back was never as direct as the walk there however.....

Nightingales is right! I have eaten there at least 6 times, twice with business associates picking up the tab so the meals were extra special!

I have some friends that have a permanent site at Quiet Woods Campground, I may see if I can rent a cabin there to visit with them. I'll check into slips, thanks for the insider scoop!
