Trip to Beaufort

We took a drive to Beaufort yesterday just to be out and about.  Pretty town with a lot of history.  Visited the Maritime Museum and across the street where they have boat building classes.  Guess where I'll be spending some time?  The homes in town are older than our country, and beautifully preserved.  (much like bob23)
The town is best known for the pirate activity of the 1700s and mostly Blackbeard.
So keep your booty covered.  :o
I spotted a Compac 16 in a front yard, and a 23 along the waterfront with mast up on a trailer.  Compacs are well represented in North Carolina.  I also found a dive store to fill my tanks and take a refesher course.  (it's been awhile since i've been down) On AICW is docked a sailboat that is the largest I've ever seen.  The mast has 5 spreaders and towers above all the buildings and other masts.  At least 100' if not more.  The boat itself has to be 100'.  The locals say it was towed in by two tugs during a "king tide" and is now sitting with it's keel sunk 3' feet in the mud and sand.  It was brought in for maintenance and has a crew of 4 living aboard.  The mast is too tall to fit under any bridge so it must be removed before the next king tide so the boat can be moved to a marina to start the repairs.  It's reported to have cost $6,000,000 and is owned by a man who also owns several auto dealerships.  Something to keep in mind the next time the salesman tells you they can't afford to lower the price.

Great pics, crazycarl! I would love to learn boatbuilding and would be curious to hear what your thoughts are once you start taking classes! Interesting town history and yeah -- that is one large sailboat, indeed!!!

Fair winds!

I've taken 2 Wooden Boat Building classes at the museum in Beaufort.  A lot depends upon the instructor, as the Boatwright at the museum seems to be a position that changes every cupla yrs (he's the teacher)..  First one was the "part one of 2" and about stood by itself very well.  That was abt 20 yrs ago, and they've changed one official policy since, when I attended, the boatwrght told me, and others I think, that if I needed to use the large bandsaw, or other tools, I could anytime.  I know that changed 6-8 yrs ago.  The guy then, (don't remember his name) wouldn't even take a small piece and saw it himself.  He's gone now, I think Tim White is still there now.

They also have a week long class (or 2) in the Summers.  The ones I took were just 2-days on a weekend.
Keith Scott, the Compac dealer in Richlands, sold a lot of Compacs in the last 25 yrs.  We bought our Horizon from him just last yr.  IF you want to go over there, call or email first, he's single handing it these day I think - if you haven't been there yet.

I've been intending to drive to Richlands, (3 hour round trip), I just need to do it.

Sounds like a fun trip.  I don't know if you follow "Sailing Project Atticus" on Youtube or not but they are posting videos from Washington, NC which isn't too far from you.  Their boat is in a marina there.  Washington looks like a cool town from what I've seen from their videos.

The mast is too tall to fit under any bridge so it must be removed before the next king tide so the boat can be moved to a marina to start the repairs.

Unless you're Jeff Bezos, in which case you just have the (national landmark) bridge removed for the convenience of your boat.

Thanks for the tip.  We're in Washington today.  Great little town and almost the entire waterfront is free (48 hour) docks or transients.
