Hello All,

We are having a 1993 CP-27 surveyed this Friday and if all works out we will be purchasing her. We have overland shipping arranged for mid Oct, but are thinking about possibly making the trip underway. We have a two week leave window from 01-14 Oct, what are your thoughts, strategies, concerns about making this run this time of year?

Westbrook - Port Jefferson
Port Jefferson - Manhasset Bay
Manhasset - Great Kills or Sandy Hook
GK/SH - Manasquan or Atlantic City
Man/AC to Cape May
Cape May - Delaware City
D City - Sassafras
Sass - Anapolois
Anapolis - Pax River
Pax - Great Wicomico
Great Wicomico - Urbanna

We are willing to put the boat up anywhere along the trip if we run out of time, our hope being at least into the upper Chesapeake worst case.

Any and all input will be very much appreciated.

Take care,
John

Hey John:
I have helped bring two boats south: A Tartan 34-C, from the Conneticut River to Washington DC, two souls on board; A Shannon 43 from Newport to Deltaville, 4 souls on board.  One boat from New Bern to Buffalo, a Jenneau 36, with two souls aboard.  The two southern trips were accomplished in daylight, the northern trip, we went out at Norfolk and in at Sandy Hook.  All those boats, especially the Shannon, are more sea kindly than a C-27.  Although as I have posted recently C-27's do have their sailin' days.

I would say bring it down yourself.  Come into the Chesapeake via Cape May and the Delaware.  Of course pay attention to the weather.  I would probably not go offshore with waves >3 ft, depending on wind.

Have a great time.
regards charlie

I've traveled the inlets in NJ and they can be a slow go if you time it wrong. Now I was in a 25 with a 12hp westerbeke, so not an apples to apples comparison to the 27. AC inlet took 40mins to go a mile against the tide. Don't count out Barnegat inlet as a possible layover as well, the anchorage isn't too far from the mouth but AC is definitely more open with an anchorage right off the Golden Nugget casino.  Navionics has a great route builder which lets you enter estimate speed, and also has a tidal charts. You can download the app on your phone too so easier to prep.

Thank you diesher6 and Reighnman for taking the time to respond,

I'm a tad concerned with the run down the Jersey Coast, hoping to get it done in one hop if we can get the weather. Manasquan doesn't looks like it's worth the trouble so it Atlantic City at least and Cape May at best.

Any additional input would be welcomed and appreciated.

Take care,
John

Sandy Hook to Cape May is over 100 miles so that's about 20hrs at 5mph.  You'd probably need a couple jerry cans to complete it or time a stop at AC for refueling. It's a easy inlet aside from tidal flow, and if you fancy a table game or two, transient slips are available at Golden Nugget. I'd google Sandy hook to Cape May sailing and plenty of sites will have good insight. A complete kit of spares such as impeller, belt, several fuel filters, and tools would give comfort, perhaps a membership to BoatUS as well. Sounds like it'll be an epic trip, one day I hope to do it myself.

Thank you all for taking the time to reply,

Anyone have conservative numbers for fuel consumption on the 20B

5kts 2500 rpm .7 gph?

6Kts ?

Any input will be appreciated.

Take care,
John

Six states and many wonderful cruisers along the way.

The CP-27 is a fine little ship, overall very comfortable and functional for 12 days aboard. I was pleased with her speed off the wind and ease of handling. With reefed main and full 135% she was well mannered in 15-20kts with gusts up to 25kts running down the Chesapeake. She is a bit lively when the seas are up - we were in a washing machine on our run down the NJ coast and were pretty beat when we arrived Cape May. The westerbeke 20 hp was flawless and allowed us to make time against the tides heading for the East River. If we had more time we would have gladly kept heading South, never felt cramped or stuck on a boat. The hard part is returning to boring everyday life.

Ahoy! what ship be that? We're HARRIER eleven days out of Westport CT, bound for Urbanna, VA - That was our rallying call when things got interesting along the way, going to miss that part.

Take care and good sailing,
John

Congrats John & Crew on an epic maiden voyage! I'm sure Harrier much preferred the Atlantic Ocean over I-95 and now you know that much more about her instead of just getting her splashed in VA. Good stuff for sure.

Thank you Chelle and Reighnman,

It was an epic adventure and a great way to get to know Harrier. I'm so glad we were able to sail her down, boats on trailers seem wrong. I have to say that my crew - Wife Sonia, did a fantastic job especially during our Jersey Coast transit.

Happy sailing, take care,
John
