We are officially homeless.  The closing went without a hitch and we are living in a hotel until Saturday.  Tomorrow I'll take the truck in for an oil change and tire rotation.  Get my hair cut to blend in the shaved area where the staples were and then go to the dr to have my foot checked after dropping the hitch on it.  Joanie is convinced it's broken and she was right about my broken hand last fall.  Friday morning we have the Jeep secured on the trailer and then spend the entire day relaxing for the drive to NC Saturday.  Once in NC I'll call Keith at NC Sailboats to have him rebed the genoa tracks, install the boom kicker, and move the shrouds in order to eliminate the backstay.

I'll miss all the CLR crew and the late night dock conversations, but everyone is welcome to come to Oriental and tie up at our dock.  Heck, I'll even put a bumper out for Bob!

I'm always up for trying regional foods.  So many cities, so many kinds of pizza.  What could be better!?

Good luck to you two!  Hopefully all will go well for you there.  It looks like a great place to live from what I can see by map.  I will be in Holden Beach which is south of Wilmington in September and may take the long home and head up north to check that area out.  Going to miss you at CLR!

Congrats on the sale and best of luck driving south!

What a great adventure.  Best of luck.  Once you get settled you should check out B&B Yacht Designs in Bayboro, NC.  They have some really interesting small sailboat designs.

Welcome to the South!  Although we from deeper regions are still a little skeptical about North Carolina, it is below the Mason Dixon line and you will increase the forum population of Southerners.  That is important in light of protection from Bob and his unsavory cousins.

Remember to tread lightly with regard to the natives.  Bad things can happen if you don't.  As an example, a group of Yankees infiltrated the City Council and Mayors office in Mexico Beach, FL and started to try to change the place into the hell holes that they had left.  God saw fit to send Hurricane Michael to clean up that mess.  All is well now, they have all gone.

Some helpful hints for you:

Brackish,  thanks for the advice.  When were looking at properties there, I inquired why so few people had southern accents.  I was informed most of the residents are "halfers".  Northerners who migrated to Florida, found it too hot and crowded so they moved halfway back.

Oriental is arguably one of the top 5 places to slip a boat in the US.

We finally made it to ONC.  We spent 3 days at a Holiday Inn in New Bern while we secured a rental home.  Today we moved into the "Old Oriental Hotel" where we planned on staying until the rental home became available at the end of the month.  However, that may not happen now.  The realtor asked for a credit report.  We attained one.  They asked for the past 2 years W2 forms. Didn't bring those with us,  but we showed her our monthly automatic deposits with our online banking app.  Then she wanted a criminal history report.  ?  She claimed here one can get it by going to the sheriff's office.  That's when I said I was done and walked out.  It's been 38 years since I filled out an application for a rental, but then I paid a fee and THEY did the background check.

So, although the Piggly Wiggly had gas this afternoon, our residence is still up in the air.  There is a beautiful Ted Gozzard sailboat in tow for a mere $200,000.

This is how rental companies roll these days. My daughter just rented an apartment in Raleigh and I co-signed as guarantor. They asked me for everything short of a colonoscopy, and I WASN'T EVEN THE TENANT. Sheesh. I'm told that eviction laws make it difficult for landlords to get rid of non-paying tenants, so the landlords double down on due diligence.

That is ridiculous though that they wanted you to get your own criminal history report.

PS Welcome to NC! You may find sailing on the lower Neuse to be a bit frisky when the wind picks up. Head north to Bay River, then take the Goose Creek cut ((ICW) up to the Pamlico River. That's my home sailing grounds - more manageable wind and waves for smaller boats. Many good overnight options in this area too.

Of course...oh wait...shucks.  I should have worded it differently.
