Looking for a new Jib Furler

So my jib furler is old and missing components from what I've been told so I'm looking at new ones. I'm specifically looking at this Harken from West Marine and just wanted to make sure it would be a good fit for the CP 16.

If there is a better furler I'd be open to it.

I'm hoping to re-use the existing track for the sail with the new furler. So if that won't work I'll have to look into getting a new track as well.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Check out CDI.  FF1 model is what we have on ours.

Could be wrong but that looks like a wire luff furler which I dont' think works with your current luff foil or headsail bolt.

That track certainly looks like what I've got now. The sailcdi site didn't have a price listed, is $500 an average price for that model? I'd like to know before I call up a local dealer.

Yeah, I wasn't sure, I thought it looked close, since the existing furler is also my mainstay, it's not something I've been keen on taking apart until I plan on actually replacing it.

The CDI is a simple, reliable design. I have one on my 19 and have been very happy with it.

Wasn't familiar with Harken product you mentioned, but they are a great company and I wouldn't be afraid to buy. Defender has them in stock for $281.47 if you are a Defender First member (you should be!). "Friends don't let friends buy from West Marine."

Note that Harken says "Designed for furling only – not reefing." That would be a real limitation. Perhaps the product is mainly intended for sailing dinghies, not a relatively heavy keelboat like a CP 16. I'd suggest a call to Harken to discuss.

Well as it is I can't reef anyway. My main concern is making sure my existing sail will work with the new system since my Jib is still in good shape. I emailed Harken directly to see if it will work, but after reviewing their manual I don't think it will. (They replied, and it won't work since their system relies on the wire being run through the sail itself.)

The FF1 looks like a more direct replacement for my existing setup. The FF1 manual shows the same kind of track my existing setup has so my guess is I'm going to need to go with that one if I want the replacement to be fairly straight forward. I'm going to email sailcdi as well and see what they say.

I heard back from SailCDI and they said I would need an FF2, which would come in at around $900 for the Furler as well as a new track etc. The rep I talked to said the FF2 is needed because of the wire size. I'll have to check the wire size on my Com-Pac to see where it falls. The FF1 shows a max wire size of 1/8" where as the FF2 shows a max size of 3/16".

The factory rigging specs show 5/32" for the CP 16 forestay. So it looks like you need the FF2.

Well that price is a whole lot more reasonable.

I personally would stick with the standard unit.  It is simple, requires virtually no maintenance, and is easy to setup, clean, etc.  I haven't had any issue with smooth operation or performance that ball bearings would significantly improve.

Ok, if I can save almost $100 I'm cool with that. I just figured the ball-bearings would help the unit last longer or perform better.

I do not have a furler, but I think the FF1 works on the standard CP 16 fore stay.
Believe National Sales and Hutchins can provide the CDI FF1 and sail without changing the head stay. May be worth your checking because the FF2 is considerably more $$ than the FF1.
