Stern Drains etc.

When I look at the picture of the stern of CP 27s, I see the location of the drains, exhausts, etc in a variety of locations.

Mine are all four located right along the boot stripe on the transom.  To me, it seems pretty low to the water, especially if there are following seas.

My boat has been on the hard since I got her (mostly medical issues, work and winters) and is finally close to being launched.  Just curious about that.

That's extremely interesting - I've never seen a 27 with a transom set up like that. Nor one with the skinny sheer stripe either. Wondering whether you have a very early model (what's your hull number?) or maybe these were mods by a previous owner (why?).

I can't think of any reason why having the cockpit drains exit so low would be a problem. I definitely don't like the idea of the exhaust being underwater, nor the bilge pump outlets.

Would love to crawl inside your engine compartment and do some "forensic analysis"!

Hey Wes

I was definitely curious.

Its hull #156 from 94 so not a very early model for sure.

No sign of the moving of the thru transoms on the inside nor the outside.

Thanks

Here's how my transom looks; similar to every other 27 I've seen. My boat is a 1988 model, hull number 74.

Upper two openings are the bilge pump outlets (manual pump to port, electric pump to starboard). Middle two (just below the swim ladder) are the cockpit scuppers. The lowest one (to port) is the exhaust.

This was taken before my paint job! Those cursed brown stripes are no more. After painting, I replaced the rubber flapper valves that keep water out of the openings. They are readily available from Defender or Worst Marine.

The ultimate expert is Gerry at the Hutchins factory. If you email him your photo I'll betcha he knows the answer.

Well! Thanks to a tip from Charlie Deisher, here's a photo from the Hutchins web page for the current model 27/3. The transom views are fuzzy, but it appears the openings match your boat. Looks like they made this change with later year models. Guess I've only seen boats from the 1980s.

Cockpit drains being low shouldn't matter, on my Sabre they are underwater and have seacocks on them. Bilge would be fine if it has a raised hoop/loop inside the hull right before the through-hull and an anti-siphon valve in the run. Engine would likely be similar though if the stern was ever weighed down the increased back pressure might be a tiny bit of an issue... though probably not at all on a diesel and lots of boats have exhausts underwater. (outboards)

Biggest concern would really be if an owner replaced the hoses, they would want to make sure to keep the loops/hoops inside the boat and any/all anti-siphon valves inline.

Thanks all

I spoke with Gerry and this is the configuration they used.  No issues at all.  There are "loops" in all the hoses as needed.

THanks everyone

I have a 2002 CP-27 and all four drains are identical to the first picture and all four have seacocks connected to them. As far as I know that is all OEM configuration.

Thanks

I confirmed with Hutchins that this is the correct configuration.

I appreciate your feedback though.
