Bonne Air new owner

Hello All,

I recently purchased Bonne Air - a 1994 CP27 - laying in the Eau Gallie Yacht Basin in Eau Gallie (Melbourne), Fl. I took possession exactly 5 days before Irma arrived here and had no chance to move her to the hard or anything else in preparation except double up the lines and make sure everything topside that could be moved below had been. I can report that she rode the storm out splendidly and, except for the Windex carrying away, came away unscathed. After that little bit of drama I have been working my way through making minor repairs and upgrades. Although she has several of the items to address typical of a 23 year-old boat, she is in remarkably good condition. One thing that continues to puzzle me is the engine (18HP westerbeke). At higher RPM it intermittently acts as though it is being starved of fuel - some sort of restriction. The tank has been flushed, racors replaced, lines replaced. Any ideas? I'm not sure how many hours are on the engine, but the boat over all has had very little use, so I don't think it is wear related..... All suggestions welcomed.....

Dale,

There should be a screen located at the bottom of the fuel pick up tube located in the fuel tank.  This often gets clogged.  Most of us have removed it.  There is also a fine screen located at in the fuel pump.  If you look closely at the fuel pump you can see the bottom twists off and the screen is located there.

I had fuel problems that were finally resolved when I removed inline filter mentioned in the blog, and removed the tank rinsed it and cleaned it with muriatic acid.

I also have the Westerbeke 18hp diesel in my 1993 CP-27.  I would also check for air leaks as I think it can also replicate the issue you are describing.  I just read this article on sailboatrichlands.com about diesels sucking air.  (Ref. page 70 of Nigel Caulder's book Marine Diesel Engines)  Might as well start building the library...

Hey Dale:  Wayne brings up a good point here, there has been fuel problems mentioned on this blog caused by air leaks from the Racor filter/separator.  I replaced mine, just to eliminate a possibility.
