New CP-16 owner in Colorado

Hello all, figured I introduce my self.

I am the proud new owner of an 85 CP 16-2.

I just had her out in the water for the first time yesterday evening and she sailed great.
I also sail a laser but this was my first time sailing such a boat.

I know there are some other Colorado sailors peppered about on this forum, it would be nice to hear experiences from them. I have so far only sailed at Union Reservoir but want to branch out some more.

Anyways, just wanted to say hi. Maybe ill add some pictures in the near future.

Welcome!  Not near you (New Hampshire) but have a CP16 ll as well and love it! Fact is, I joined this club thinking I might contact other owners in my area (pretty remote) but over the short time I have been a member, I find that I have made CP friends all over the globe.

i see this is your 1st post so i'll assume you're new to the compac family. 

OH! speaking of family, the wife and i will be visiting our daughter in Northglenn august 15th to the 19th.

looking at the map, Union Reservoir is only a 1/2 hour drive north.  i could bring our 15' sailboat (non compac) and if you're available, we could meet up for a day sail.

Oh, don't believe anything you hear about me on this site.  they're all nuts, i'm the only sane one.

About my 85 CP 16, it is in relatively good shape, the previous owner took good care of it; although he did not sail it much, he had it on the water on some occasions so the boat was sail worthy. Despite it being a 16, it came equipped with the full lighting package, battery box with full wiring, stereo, cabin lighting, compass, dept gauge, and knot meter. I was looking for a well wounded weekender that I could use for a few weekends out in the water. As far as restoration goes, there will always be things I will want to upgrade or improve but the only thing that really needs attention is the bowsprit. Currently, the boats forestay is attached to the bow instead of the bowsprit because the bobstay seems to be too long. I am hoping the once I replace, or however address, the bobstay issue I can then make the bowsprit functional again. I also hope that I do not have to purchase a new forestay to move it up from where it is.

Any info anyone might have on this would be nice to hear. I understand that my bobstay should be 1 x 19, i do not know what the 1 is for but I am guessing the 19 means 19" long? Is the over all length to include turnbuckles?

I have never sailed out on Aurora, how is it out there? I hope to branch out from Union Res, but it is where I also store the boat for the season so Union is just so easy right now.

Welcome as well! We have an 87' 16/2. Maybe post a pic of what you have going on and can at least steer you towards how ours is set up. Will try to remember to take a pic of her sprit this weekend.

agree with MAS (more?)...let's see a close-up of the bowsprit
we have a 1996 CP 16cb and that bowsprit has a connection for the forestay and the headsail
so words are great, but what a picture can tell

Aurora is quite nice (it's the city's water supply, so blue-green water and full most of the sailing season). Only electric motors, so no jet ski or motorboat traffic. It has a nice beach with picnic tables, etc., and paddleboard/kayak rentals. We store our boat there.

Noticed your bow sprit question. 1/19 is the diameter of the stainless wire and there is one turnbuckle on our bobstay (CP III). I would contact ComPac to discuss rerigging that and the forestay questions.

I believe a 1x19 wire cable would be the construction geometry, if you will. One bundle of 19 strands. As opposed to say a 7x19 cable which would be 7 bundles of 19 strands each, or 133 strands total. It's not related to size in that the wire strand dimension can vary.
