Replacing Upper Starboard Stay on CP 19

My CP 19 tangled with a Hunter 21.6 docked next door during a wind event last weekend. The right upper stay appears to have a small kink just under the spreader. It also appears to be pulled out of the spreader and held on by the spreader boot, and maybe some of the wire that secured the joint.

I cannot sail like this and need to evaluate the damage by lowering the mast. (Luckily it is near the end of the season here.

My question is can I order a new stay from Hutchins and assume the length will be exactly correct. My boat was built in 1983 , number 184. I have no idea if the side stays have remained exactly the same all these years.

Any comments will be appreciated.

Thanks, Gil

To be certain you are getting the correct length, I'd bring the kinked wire to a rigger and have him duplicate it.

Gil,

If your standing rigging is the original, I'd replace all, since you'll have the mast down anyway. Concur on the rigger, they can do a good job for you.

Well, we hauled out my CP19 this past week and inspected the stay. It was pulled from the spreader slot but the wire held . The proper way to wire a stay into the spreader slot holds it in place but allows it to pull out if forced to do so.  No sign of damage and/or frayed strands of wire. Re wired the stay into spreader, inspected the other side too and replaced the spreader boots. As far as I know, all rigging is original . (I have owned this boat for 10 yrs) No sign of rust, frays, etc. anywhere on the riging. Chain plates all look good, etc. I'm leaving all rigging as it stands. Several other old 19's in my marina with original rigging intact too. The folks who hauled my boat are sailboat experts and did the inspection.

Gil,

Good deal, now you'll have extra cash for a Christmas gift for Suo Gan. You'll have the winter to do the repairs.

Are you sailing in fresh water?

Sailing her in fresh water for past 10 years. Prior to that she was in sailed water. For her age she is in amazing shape shape and always gets positive comments.
