Points well made, Jett.

Since shes on a mooring its a twice-a-sail trip to the bow for the pennant, minimum.
Certainly possible, just not too pleasurable.

Hey Hinmo,

The 16's and 23's sail very similar and IMHO are the easiest and most comfortable to sail of the Compac designs. They don't pound, they have great secondary stability and actually are quite fast for their designs. The 19's are twice the boat of a 16 but they do sail differently. They have good initial stability but less so secondary. They also are prone to pound. Still great boats though, just different design considerations.

A fella named Robert Burgess wrote a great book called "The Handbook of Trailer Sailing" that has much info about the 16''s, 19's, and 23's. One of the good tips from him to limit going forward on his 16 when weather was bad was to install what is essentially a jib downhaul. Quarter inch line tied off at mast run through the jib bow shackle then up to the head of your jib (make sure the line is long enough for this task). Then to haul in your jib you simply uncleat it and let the halyard slip through your fingers while hauling it down with your downhaul. Cleat both off and jib is down and you never went forward.

There is never an end to wishing more, but sometimes less is more. The name of our 16 is Mas, because she is!

Interesting perspective on the 19. Thanks

There was a 23 for sale cheap here in New England, but the owner has not responded to me.

BTW - my 16 has a jib furler so I don't have to go fwd to raise the foresail.

23's are great boats. Just sold one to a family up in New England. I'm sure they will enjoy her much. No Mas NE is his intro to the forum.

Didn't realize you had a furler. Our little 16 has a working jib and a 155 genny.

Good luck with your decision. We are very happy to have a 16 again!
