Next month my wife Nancy and I are driving to Pender Harbor, BC to pick up our new (to us) 2012 Compac PH 23 and spend 3 weeks cruising Desolation Sound.

This year I turn 70 and Nancy 71. After having owned too many sailboats (including 5 Seawards), we have decided to try something different and smaller and quicker to rig.

Some of you may recognize this boat as Emma B. The picture was taken in the PNW by the owner, Frank.

I know the looks of this boat don't suit everyone, but that's OK with me.

We can always leave the mast off and have a small power cruiser.

If we really don't like it, I already have someone that has offered to buy it.

After we return from our trip I will post a trip report.

Fair Winds to us all!

Welcome to the CPYOA and Bon Voyage! What a great way to begin your  septuagenarian childhood! If you have as much fun aboard that fine vessel as Frank, we'll be delighted with many pics and stories.

Welcome Bud!

Smaller and quicker to rig was why we purchased our Eclipse.

The pacific northwest is such a great place to be on or around the water.  Enjoy.

Hey Bud:
Welcome to the blog and to ComPac's.

Have a great voyage.  70 is getting closer than I like to think, hope to still be sailing then.

Only question:  Is it possible to have owned too many sailboats?

Welcome and enjoy your cruise.  It looks like a nice boat.

Welcome and I have to say I like the concept.  My wife and I turn 70 next year and what you are doing seems perfectly reasonable.  In fact I think we should just keep recycling the same boat for each couple as they enter their seventieth year.

Bud - 70? I can't remember that far back! Anyhoo, welcome to the forum and enjoy your cruise. We can all follow along vicariously. And at least you can
stand up in your boat, can't do that in a CP16 with the hatch closed!

P.S. Actually, I do recall my 70th BD. The whole clan celebrated with me by taking turns sailing Pegasus all day. Was truly wonderful. Can't wait to do it again.

Enjoy your trip....Desolation Sound is a wonderful area.  Be ready to stern tie when anchored.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome.

I know, how did 70 sneak up on us???

Too many boats? Dunno, hasn't happened yet.

My father died at 78. Nancy's mom died at 76. We want to try to make the most of whatever time left. Be it a day or 20 years.

I was in a BMW motorcycle dealership today. The poster on the wall was a couple of guys on BMW's looking off into the distance.

Ahhh...Bud: A man after my own heart. I never owned a Beemer but it's kind of on the list. R bike only...I'm too much a purist.
And...welcome! I normally charge new members the standard $5000.00 initiation fee but I like you so for tonight only I'm reducing the fee to $4950.00. You can thank me in person sometime...or buy me a cold Guinness!
Thank you for joining. I've always admired Frank's boat and I'm happy you have her. May she serve you well and always bring you back. I can tell you'll be a good source of lies...ah, er...stories, yeah sailing stories and we look forward to hearing from you!
Fair winds!

Bud et all.  Well I hit the 70 year old mark last month and have convinced myself that it is only a number.  I hope to continue to sail forever, or at least forever for me.  Off the Wind, my 2007 Eclipse is probably my last boat since it does everything I want it to do.  I have owned many small wet boats and a Capri 16, Precision 18, Precision 21 and now the Eclipse.  My other passion is bike riding and I get on either of my bikes as often as I can.  I have some computer development work to do this AM but plan on being on the bike in the PM.  We live very close to the Fox River trail system in northern Illinois.  It gives me over 200 miles of bike trails by crossing one street.  As long as I can sail and ride, I am happy.  I just ordered the sailing shirt that says "never underestimate an old man with a sailboat" and will wear it proudly, even to CLR this summer.  Sail on everyone, but especially those of us over 70.  Al

Ah, yes. The Beemer. Looking back (fondly) a bunch of decades ago, I had a 1954 R51/3 sidecar model (sans sidecar - another story). It was very, very cool (although not very quick - 36hp!). It had "4 on the floor" on the left and a stick shift on the right. Coolest thing - exposed chrome driveshaft. When I needed an adrenaline boost, I'd borrow a friends BSA.

P.S. Looking at "74" come August!
P.P.S. Never buy anything that "everybody" else has! My first car was a 1952 MGTD... need I say more?
