Summer Wind

Hi-

New member and first post.

I just purchased a Com-Pac 23/2. She is 1,500 miles from my home and made the decision based solely on photos.

The boat is 100% stock. My question is how many headsail halyards did the manufacturer include? Obviously, there is one for the jib/genoa. But was curious if there was a second. Also, did it include a topping lift?

Thanks for the assistance!

Welcome to the family!  I have a 23IV, but I don't think the masthead arrangement has changed over time.  There is one sheave set in the mast head for the headsail.  The mast head casting also has a forward ring to attach a block to add a spinnaker/drifter/other headsail that sets ahead of the forestay.  There is no stock topping lift although a backstay pigtail is included to hold the boom up when not sailing.  If you have or add a furler that has its own internal halyard such as a CDI you can use the existing headsail halyard sheave set to add a topping lift.  Or you can add a topping lift fixed at the masthead and adjustable at the boom.  Lot's of folks have done all these things, do a search or ask for help if you can't find what you need.

Your masthead rig should be very similar to DH-1011 in the link below.

Thanks for the welcome and information!

I am going to add a CDI FF2. A simple block and halyard will do the trick for the asymmetrical.

Actually glad there is no topping lift. Just another line that can get fouled up top.

When you add the CDI flex Flurler then you can use the jib halyard as a topping lift.  It is useful, trust me.

There is a place at the top of the mast where you can attach a block for a spinnaker halyard.  The tack of my asymmetrical is adjustable via a pulley on the bow sprit attached to that anchor platform.

I do exactly what Heave does and it works great. Why some boats come without a topping lift is beyond me. It's very helpful when reefing.

Oh my....I am slipping. Summer: There is a $5000 initiation fee that all new members must pay. It's customarily paid in cash directly to me. 23 owners get a 50% discount (new rule guys). Please drop the $2500.00 off at the corner of Mainsail street and 23rd avenue in a plain paper bag tonight at midnight. As an alternative to paying cash: If you promise to keep us all well stocked with Gosslings Rum and PBR and scrape, sand and repaint the bottoms of all the moderators boats, we'll call it even. Thing of this as an investment in the lives of others!
Bob23- welcome aboard!!!!!

Ah...and now the world is right again.  Thanks Bob23!  LOL

Seriously, you have gotten yourself a tough little boat capable of big things.  I have done some pretty nice cruising on mine and I have bigger plans for the future.  The end of the season I ended up with a trip with winds constantly in the 15-20 knot range and sometimes in the 25 knot range.  I sailed through it just fine with a reefed main and a partly rolled 110.  I didn't venture out in the Chesapeake Bay in those conditions and regret not trying it considering how good I did in the Potomac.  I did keep to the windward shore but I think she would have been okay.  Hell, some people have crossed over to the Bahamas in a Compac 23.

This is a great place to share ideas and get information.  There is a lot of knowledge here and a lot of projects that have been done.  You may even see some nice photographs of the projects (I need to document some of my upgrades better).
