Still not Sailing

Just spent the entire week working on the house and yard.  even hired out some of the yard and house work.

moved the small daysailer from the back yard to the garage and cleaned her all up.

thursday the wind was perfect and the skies finally clear.  I rigged her up in the drive to make sure everything was there,
but by the time i was finished,  i was too exhausted to go sailing.

i took a long nap in hopes to out that evening, but the winds died and we sat out back around the fire pit.

no sooner is the fire lit, and the winds slowly build to about 10mph.  as i look at the trees gently swaying, i'm thinking...night sail!

but i'm reminded i need to wake early friday and begin the yard and house work again.

well, my next opportunity will be tuesday when my cousin from england comes to stay with us.

so... if he wants to go sailing, it would just be rude not to take him!

Skip,
42F?  I'm up in Sister Bay, and it's 51F.  But, it's wicked windy--too much to sail.  I would have stayed down in Milwakee and sailed the new HDC, but the forecast called for rain, so I came up to our place in SB to hang out (and unfortunately mow the lawn).  At least it's not raining up here.  If you want to come down and sail on the HDC some time let me know.

My cousin Ian, whom I haven't seen since 1973, came to visit from England and we spent 2 days sailing our little lake.

long summer daze isn't a compac, but she's a sailboat all the same.

On the North end of our lake, we were gently sailing along at about 3 knots when out of the corner of my eye I noticed rough water.

By the time I turned to look, the "micro burst" hit us and we nearly went over.

My cousin isn't a sailor, but he knew to immediately turn into the wind and follow me to the starboard side.  It was too late, the rudder wasn't grabbing and the boat heeled to port and shipped about 30 gallons of water over the gunnel.

In an instant it was over.  The lake was becalmed and we sat there with absolutely no wind in our sails.

Looking around, there was hardly a ripple on the water.  Strange.

Still, it was good to be back on the water.

Is that a Sarocca 15, Carl?

I wish i knew.

when i purchased the boat it had been advertised as a hullmaster 16, however, she measures 15' on the nose, and i couldn't locate any information that hullmaster ever built a boat smaller than 27'.

she originally came with a main sail that sat the boom just above the cabin, and had a red "C" with a 15 inside as the insignia.

some years after the purchase, i saw another one on graigslist advertised as a hullmaster 15 with the same sail.

there isn't a manufacturers plate or hin on the boat, illinois gave me a hin for it.

no doubt it's some sort of copy of the popular o'days from the '70s.
